Worth It Verse: Jo and Ari, shared with co-author @just-horrible-things Timeline: Day 1 as a prisoner So Close - Too Far - Parting Words - Worth It CW for death mention

~~~
Her eyes blink slowly open to a world that is dark, fuzzy, and unfocused. Twin points of ice rest on her. One on her shoulder, one on her side. Her thoughts are just as muddled as her vision. Each breath hurts. Her skull is still splitting- but maybe less than before? She tries to focus on something. The floor- is it red, or is her vision just tinged in red? She blinks twice, still dazed. The twin points of ice are still there. A couple pairs of boots, people standing nearby, Jo can’t raise her head to see who- what is touching her that is so cold? What is shaking and trembling on her skin?
Too Far Verse: Jo and Ari, shared with @just-horrible-things, Riven also belongs to JC, who helped write this piece! Timeline: Day 1 as a prisoner So Close-Too Far-Part 3 CW for impalement, torture, verbal abuse, whipping, implied gore, dehumanization, death mention (mind the tags please, there’s a lot!)
She’s thrown hard on the concrete floor, shoulder and hip taking the brunt of the impact as she lands on her side. She tries to roll to her feet, but a harsh kick knocks her on her back. Jo manages to choke in a breath, using that air to spit out a few choice curses in Arabic as he grabs her. She struggles violently to get away under his heavier weight, aware of people yelling and the alarm still blaring in her ears. Her head is wrenched up and suddenly slammed into the ground before she can fully process what’s happening. Light and pain have overwhelmed her senses, head ringing, thoughts confused and spinning. She’s still reeling when her head is pulled up and rammed down once more. The world is filled with blinding constellations and the cacophony in her skull is nearly unbearable. “Mouthy little bitch,” he is snarling, more meaningless vitriol. “You’ll regret fighting me.” Her vision is still returning when the blows start coming without pause. She’s not aware of much except that he’s on top of her, punching, brass knuckles colliding with bone and tearing skin. Jo tries desperately to shield her face with her unbroken hand, and Riven grabs it and beats it into the concrete. She can hear something snap, and maybe she cries out, she doesn’t know. There’s so much happening. She tries with everything to reach for some last bit of magic, but she has nothing more than a tiny flame that dances on her fingertips before dying out. Her other hand is grabbed, the one he broke earlier, and more snaps ring through the air as a couple fingers are yanked and twisted. Footsteps approach, two of the terrible suppression cuffs wrestled over her broken wrist, the iron bands wrapping around her magic and fully containing it. “That should hold the fucking thing,” says a voice that isn’t Riven’s, and he grunts a barely-verbal agreement. Another hit across her face, tearing her cheek open, and then the weight is off her at last.
So Close Verse: Jo and Ari, shared with @just-horrible-things, Riven also belongs to JC Timeline: Day 1 as a prisoner Follows right behind The Reveal and Traitor
~~~

She can’t sleep. Every tiny movement outside of the cell sends her heart racing, breath picking up to match despite her best efforts to remain calm. This could very well be her last night to actually sleep without being in too much pain, but she just can’t. Her leg burns and throbs, but even that takes a backseat to the apprehension clawing at her throat. Jo can feel her magic building, pushing against the cuffs, sending a spike of pain behind her eyes at the suppression of her power. She knows she is strong enough to break the cuffs, and it’s so tempting to do it now. But if Jo can convince them of her story… an escape attempt in this moment would make her look even guiltier. She needs to be patient. Besides, her magic isn’t completely returned from the other day. Waiting until right before they start with the torture would be her best bet. Fully equipped with her power and giving herself reasonable time to convince them.

You Can Stay Verse: Jo and Ari shared with @just-horrible-things (Jay also belongs to JC) Timeline: Midway through her time as a spy I torture the poor girl so much that it’s nice to let her have a good day here and there

~~~
Her headache won’t go away. It’s been pounding since they started the idiotic mind-magic resistant training or whatever they call it— it’s stupid. She knows, more than anyone else, that if a warlock wants to mindfuck someone it’s near impossible to resist. All the “training” did was make her head pound so hard that she literally dropped to her knees at one point, clutching at it. Her own magic wants to break free, the chaos of the training mixing with the chaos in her mind. It’s knocking on the heavy door she built to contain it, sending waves of agony through her with each breath. And dickhead Riven fuckin McLauren didn’t help. Purposefully being loud in the following classes, knowing exactly what he was doing, because his pompous ass clearly hasn’t caused her enough pain in the seven months she’s been here. People defended her at least, but it seriously felt like her skull was splitting at times.
Traitor Verse: Jo and Ari @just-horrible-things @whump-sprite Timeline: Directly after being exposed as a witch, follow up to the reveal Ari and Jay (mentioned only) belong to @just-horrible-things
~~~

They cauterize the gunshot wound, hands and chains holding her still as the hot iron is pressed to the open wound. Her back arches against unforgiving hands, and she bites her lip on a choked cry as her leg is held down for the so-called treatment. An antibiotic is stabbed into her arm, and then she’s yanked to her feet again and ordered to move. Orders only. She’s not a person anymore, just a filthy witch. Why would they bother talking to her?  She can feel the hate rolling off of them. Her hands are wrenched and cuffed behind her back, one guard on each side, with one leading the way and another trailing behind. Taking every precaution to ensure she won’t escape. They’re half-dragging her, and half-demanding that she walk. She can’t put weight on her leg, stumbling and practically hopping as she’s shoved roughly down towards the cells. Everything feels like a dream, still having trouble connecting the truth of what happens next.

We Don’t Talk Anymore (Part 1) Verse: Kethrys. The same instance happened in the resistance verse, the only difference is that she wouldn’t have known Ari prior to the feds. In Kethrys, they were childhood friends Timeline: In Kethrys, this would have happened shortly before Jo starts working with Lyllo. In resistance, this happens about a year before she starts spying in the feds. Ariadne (mentioned only) belongs to @just-horrible-things CW for drugging, hurt by a family member

~~~
Awareness comes slowly, dragging herself from somewhere in the deepest depths of her consciousness, clawing towards the light. Her eyes blink open just as slow as her uncooperative mind, not focusing properly. Each breath is too tight, and no part of her body is willing to cooperate with her demands to move. Someone is standing in front of her, recognizable, but her mind is sluggish to make any connection. She knows him, she— yeah, yeah she definitely does.
The Reveal
“Let go, you little bitch.” Sneered derisively as he twists her arm more. Yeah, right. Jo tightens her own grip, trying to shove him back, get him out of her space. Another escalation: Confronting him after he crossed a line with Ariadne the other day. He was furious at her insubordination, grabbed at her, and Jo fought back. Riven uses his greater weight to knock them both sideways before a hit to her gut leaves her doubled over. She manages to aim a punch at his face, pleased to nail him good enough to leave a black eye— it’ll match his bruised jaw well. A retaliating kick to her shins and she stumbles. Her arm is twisted again when she goes for another hit and she’s shoved back against the wall, pinned a second later. A flash of panic rushes through her, red-hot anger and bone-chilling fear mixing as she struggles to get away from him when he leans in close. “Get the hell off.” Jo snarls, hands finding his shoulders, shoving with all of her might.
The blast shouldn’t be as loud as it is, the sound echoing through the room as pure force flies through her hands, colliding with his shoulders.
Riven goes flying nearly twenty feet backwards, hitting the far wall with a loud thud as her magic bursts loose. Her anger, her fear, the build-up from containing it— and she loses control. She almost lashes out again as the silence spreads over the room, all eyes flickering to Riven against the wall. They turn back to her slowly, taking in the sparks that are dancing on her hands. Then it hits. Where she’s at, what they’ll do… No. Her secret is out.
“Entering.” “Clear.” “Clear. Go.” Jo listens carefully as they sweep through the building, not saying a word in response. Her heart is racing again when she can hear them- not just over the phone, but off in the distance, getting closer. Her hand is still raised defensively at the door, not bothering to hide her magic. “Clear.” It sounds closer again, but somehow farther away at the same time. Just an echo, hearing the voices from underwater again, like when she clawed out from the shock of her first kill. The world has shrunk to her and Ariadne: She will defend her friend, no matter who comes through that door. No one will hurt them. Jo will make damn sure of that. Sparks dance on her hands, the magic that she loves. She missed it: Missed using it, playing with it, exploring what she could do. They hate the unnatural powers that warlocks have, all of her friends do. Ari hates it especially, she’s voiced her opinions on it enough. But now it’s protecting them, keeping them safe, a power that is nearly too strong to be contained. The sparks that leap and twist around her hands are mesmerizing almost, and it feels good- freeing- not hiding who she is. Why can’t she use her magic all the time? Why can’t people see how good it can be? It can help and it can save, it doesn’t have to just be equated with destruction and fear and death.
Minhas
The witch’s head lolls. Blood drips from her lips. Riven backhands her casually to see if she’ll stir, but her head just tips to the side, then back to the centre. “Are you in there, Amir?” he calls, sing-song. “Rise and shine, no sleeping on the job.” When there’s still no sign of consciousness after a few more seconds, he sighs and unchains the prisoner from the wall, letting her flop to the floor. Maybe she’ll come round with her head at floor level. Ideally he needs to hold off another day or two before getting the healer back in, or Bright will be breathing down his neck again.
“Anyone home? Come on, wake up.” He nudges a badly displaced fracture with his foot, then kicks harder. A low groan reveals that she’s starting to come round. “Rise and shine, Amir,” he taunts, crouching down beside her to get a better look at her face. She’s well past being able to lash out. “Don’t you have some more clever words for me. Hey, look at me. Amir. Ami-ir?” Her eyes are still unfocused. Even her scowl is slack, just a hint of a curl in her lip and some residual tension between her brows. “Jo-lan-i?” Riven sings. Her eyes find his face. She doesn’t hide her fear as well when she’s dazed like this. It’s almost cute. “Can you hear me, Amir?” No response. “Jolani,” he calls again. She makes a tiny sound somewhere between a whimper and a growl.
Interesting. A little suspicion stirs in his mind. Probably it’s nothing. But it won’t hurt to investigate.
Two Shots 4/5
(1, 2, 3, 4)
Time returns to normal as the adrenaline starts to fade, exhaustion hitting her like a ton of bricks. She holds the gun for a moment longer, still aimed at the two warlocks. She didn’t miss, but the idea of her and Ari being safe isn’t quite clicking yet. They’re not moving, blank and lifeless eyes… there’s a scary stab of something close to satisfaction. Jo slowly lowers the weapon, engaging the safety. She’s not letting go of it. She stumbles up, whole body aching and sore. The movement makes black spots swarm through her vision, waves of pain still crashing around in her skull— it wouldn’t be that bad. Or shouldn’t be. It’s just the crash from the rush of adrenaline spiking all her awareness, making her injuries feel worse than what they are. Eyes flicker to Ari when she can focus again, her friend still unconscious and tied to the chair. Jo isn’t sure if she crawls or walks, but she’s moving, determined to get her friend out of here.
Her jaw hurts, arms and wrists aching from how tight she’s clinging to the arm rest, watching as Ari convulses and cries out. Ari’s muscles have long-since seized up, but she’s still trying to thrash for freedom and growing increasingly panicked when that freedom won’t come. Her friend’s body jerks with another powerful shock, and Jo can feel her eyes narrow in hate. They have to stop. Ariadne is trying to spit out curses, breathless, the combined fear and pain making her friend resemble a trapped animal, tugging and biting and practically growling. “Going to kill her right away?” Jo finally speaks up. She can’t wait a second longer, if she doesn’t interrupt, they’ll kill Ariadne right in front of her. Her voice is surprisingly calm, cold and unfazed even as the panic bubbles right beneath the surface at how not okay Ariadne looks. “No wonder you guys are losing this war. You’re shit at torturing.”
“We work undercover for the Resistance.” Ari’s heart sinks as the words come out of Jo’s mouth. She thought Jo might have a good plan. But it’s not like she has any ideas of her own. “Shut up,” she hisses, rolling with the first half-formed thought she has of how to back Jo up. “Do you want to live or not?” Jo snaps back at her. Quicker off the mark than Ari as always. “What choice do we have?” Ariadne glowers at her. Pain pools in her eyes as she deepens her frown. “Yeah right,” scoffs the warlock with the gun -- what kind of weakass warlock needs a gun?
But the other one is listening.
Two shots: Part 1/5
~~~

The icy wind bites through her thin jacket, and Jo grits her teeth, tugging it tighter around her. Despite the freezing air, her spirits are high, a spring to her step as she creeps back towards the dorms with Ari right beside her. It’s a rare night when she can really relax and unwind some, sneaking out to the shooting range for some practice. No gathering intel, or messing with operations, just a night with her best friend. Laughing that they managed to get their hands on some bigger guns, shooting at the targets, making up dramatic stories about who they’re aiming at. There’s a nudge on her shoulder, Ari’s eyes glinting mischievously as she nods up towards the roof. “No.” Jo giggles out, even though she’s being serious. She is pretty tired- Keeping up her cover, balancing friendships, and trying to carry out her own mission is starting to take a toll. But if she’s being completely honest, it’s mostly the magical suppression that’s really exhausting her. Jo’s had to find time to escape to the woods and use her magic, or else she gets wicked headaches that interfere with her mission. Ariadne mouths something- scaredy-cat maybe- and Jo swings an elbow into her friend’s side, before taking off running towards the door. Ari chases after her, probably about to leap and tackle, when Jo skids to a halt, all games off in a heartbeat.

A Lesson in Silence

I call this gratuitous whump. I was just in the mood for some choking. May or may not be in the canon storyline I brainstorm and write in, who knows.

Set in the modern dystopian verse that belongs to @whump-sprite and @friendlylocalwhumper. Riven (mentioned only) belongs to @just-horrible-things

Eventually there will be a name for this storyline so it can be tagged accordingly and easier to find, but today is not that day. For a quick overview of Jo in this verse, check out the summary here

First Meeting

Co-written with @just-horrible-things, this is technically the first meeting between my OC Jo, and JC’s Oc Ariadne. Both Ariadne and Riven (mentioned) belong to JC.

There isn’t a title for this arc yet (we’re working on it, eventually), but it is set in @whump-sprite and @friendlylocalwhumper modern fantasy dystopia (I guess is the best way to put it) verse, and this is Jo and Ariadne as trainees in the feds. Ariadne is ambitious, fun, somewhat chaotic, and has a strong desire to protect people from magic users- contrasted with Jo who is a magic-user trying to spy and gather intel to help her own kind.

We have done a lot with this arc, so expect to see more of it, especially the year that these two were in training.
