white actors: dropped out of school to pursue acting, told a joke once, got discovered  and starred in a blockbuster actors of colour: attended tisch julliard rada, studied acting for years, did othello, joined a theatre “for people of their ethnicity”, did hamlet, auditioned for everything, did macbeth, won prestigious theatre award that no one cares about, got their big break delivering one line in a blockbuster

What would movies look like if they were shown in color?

Most of Hollywood is white, white actors, white characters. And people of color are almost only cast in movies when the roll is stereotypical to that race. What this video is saying, is that people of color can act and perform just as well as white people can, and that there’s no reason for a person to be denied a position, solely because of their skin color.

The industry almost completely cuts out people of color and all roles are given to white people.

No shade but millenials obsession with having every oppressed group represented in ‘media’ (mainly TV shows, movies, and music) is lowkey rooted in assimilationist politics and wanting to be accepted by hegemonic power structures

no shade but I’d really love a show that didn’t revolve around a troupe of whites & white washed POCs, it’s nice to have something you can relate to, it’s nice to have jokes/commentary that you can relate to as a POC. I don’t really care if I appease the white man, just me personally I’d love to see a variety of POCs in the media being sucessful. Representation of POCs in the media is important not only because we relate to it, but because it should reflect real life /:

Naomi Scott as The Pink Ranger [x]

we have an Indian pink ranger everyone!

but is this something to celebrate? could they have picked a more white passing person? literally no.. what kid or teen is gonna watch this and obviously know shes ethnic and identify comfortably apart from rlly light skin desis? idk.

A) This is why we can’t have nice things. There’s always someone bringing a hot scolding bowel of negativity to the party.

B) She’s played Indian characters before IN KID’s MOVIES.

C) She DOES look desi.

D) The Pink Ranger was originally a white lady, and so the fact that they’re diversifying her AT ALL is a sign of progress

We should be happy for ALL women of color who succeed in the media industry because it isn’t easy. STOP dismissing her ethnicity, there’s already of that going around.

can you chill. all i wanted was a discussion so im not dropping a hot bowel of negativity as you so graphically described. and “this is why we cant have nice things” is a really silly thing to say. its ok to analyse or criticise any form of news no matter how positive it seems so just go away.

and this progress is very safe. as an individual actress masha'allah, good for her but this is a larger issue

like you have to admit there’s a problem when the majority of south asians cast are light skinned, or when they’re not light skinned they’re stereotypical, or their character descriptions describe them as “half” no matter their actual heritage, or they distance themselves from their south asianness by making self-deprecating jokes about their cultures.

like all of these things speak to whitewashing and making south asians more “acceptable” for western media, and even if south asians are cast in western media, is it really a good thing (though I am happy for the actors and having some modicum of representation) when we’re still viewed through a racist lens?

(p.s. colorism is a thing and should not be ignored in intra-community discussions)

This means so much. My elder sister has Down syndrome, and a lot of times she doesn’t feel pretty or worthy of life. But seeing Jamie Brewer do her thing and represent people with Down syndrome is so powerful. Her characters have been so substantial, exploring Down syndrome. Just because a person has Down syndrome does not mean they are lesser than. People with Down syndrome are just different. Thank god for Jamie Brewer.

viola davis won an emmy, hugged taraji while walking to the stage, quoted harriet tubman in her speech, took hollywood to task for their lack of opportunities for black actors, then thanked damn near every black actress working in television right now for leading us to this moment.

This is it. Her speech, on that platform, means more to me than the award.
