Who gets that worked up over a movie lol???? What a sad, boring life you must have 💅🏼
well, i mean…it seemed to have pissed you off enough for you to send an anonymous message about it…sooooooo…
trust me when i say you wish you had my life, nonny. i got things i paid for, i have a significant other who loves me to the high heavens, and i’ve got fulfilling friendships with the best people—some relationships lasting longer than half of the people on tumblr have been alive.
my life is anything but boring bb. but thank you for your concern! ;)
what the fuuuuuuck that asshole is still going at it???????? sarahbecky or whatever??????? thanks for saying something by the way. after hearing about david gaider saying "[east] asian people don't exist in dragon age" and white fandom going ham on e. asian fandom's ass about it, my energy was totally spent. like he admitted it's a failing but he didn't care enough to fix the problem.
Sarah-Beth had the audacity to send me an instant message like we know each other and shit, and then she proceeded to demand that I explain to her how The Forest is racist and white-washing, even though I explained it as simply as possible in the original post. And after I explain again she proceeds to tell me what racism is and isn’t and dismisses everything I told her.
You really shouldn’t have to thank me. This shouldn’t even be an issue.
It’s just so easy to understand that you can’t take the cultural pain and sacred places of a country and then turn it into a white sensation like WHAT EVEN Y’ALL ALREADY TOOK SO MUCH FROM EVERYONE ELSE-
good god. and then she made a throwaway blog just to harass you some more. like what the fuck are even racist white people tbh. how do you justify your behavior as “not racist” when you literally jump through hoops to harass black and e. asian women to champion for your fantasy of “white oppression”?????? like i honest to god cannot fathom how obtuse you’d have to be to let yourself get so ugly
The Forest wasn't whitewashed. It was based on a women who looks for her sister and BTW it actually showed that her sister was in fact depressed. Whitewashing would be if you made a movie about MLK and him being played by George Clooney.
Just wondering if you knew that Matthew Mccnohey.. I know I didn't spell his name right... Is also doing a movie about the exact same thing as the forest
i had no idea. my research shows that you’re right. he did star in a shitty movie set in the same forest. however, you (and the rest of the world) will be pleased to hear that the movie literally got boo’ed at the cannes film festival and that critics hated its dishonesty about depression, anxiety, and mental illnesses. i would also like to add that it is absolutely 100% racist because it also capitalizes and commodifies an issue specific to japan. in short, i’m real fucking glad it failed so hard on its ass.
before i say this next part, this in no way excuses matthew mcconolhlhalhy’s bigotry. i want to say this next part because people keep coming to me with “well what about this movie, and that movie, and this instance of cultural appropriation, and that one.” it’s exhausting and there are other blogs/people that are far more qualified than i am to answer those questions. i am making a list of blogs to follow in my bio that will be ready soon-ish.
with that said, i’d like to address the difference between the racism in matthew mickleback’s movie and natalie dormer’s as it is an issue that the poc community (and e. asian community by extension) must constantly endure in the west:a) matthew macandcheese is a washed up actor and nobody cares about him. on the other hand, natalie dormer is currently an a-list celebrity who is popular in feminist communities (even among non-white people) because she’s always going on about “uplifting women”. she’s getting tons of movie/tv deals because of it. at the same time, she uses her platform and influence over this enormous feminist community to exploit issues she’s ignorant about. basically, she goes and pulls this shit and is an unapologetic racist when confronted and ignores people who call her out on it and;b) matthew macklemore’s movie almost completely erases japanese people (which is still a problem) while natalie dormer’s film dehumanizes japanese people who already committed suicide by turning them into vengeful spirits and demons for white aesthetic and entertainment. and that’s shitty.
that’s my take. anything else on this, you should really ask japanese people who are willing to educate you and look up tumblrs run by them and their community.
Hi, your writing was great! Just remember next time, that japanese people in japan aren't poc, they're just japanese. Poc is an american only term. But otherwise great stuff!
You’re right. I apologize and amended the post and I’ll do better at remembering this in the future. Thank you!
How do you feel about The Forest taking their idea from existing folklore? Folklore has held that angry spirits (Yūrei) have haunted Aokigahara for centuries. I personally think it makes their plot idea less cringeworthy.
I think you mean “stealing”. Anyway, I can’t say anything about that because I’m not Japanese and am not familiar with Japanese folklore. In the context of The Forest, others have already spoken about that.
I'm white but I'm so angry about this movie. I loved Natalie but I've lost all respect for her over this. She should've researched before accepting the part. She's become so problematic as of late and I can't see it stopping. I've been losing respect for her for a while now but this is the final nail in the coffin. I'm aware you may not even want a white person being angry so I apologise but I'm so angry about it.
it’s okay to be angry at your peers and it’s good that you’re noticing the pattern in white feminism. it’s also good to call other white people out on their ignorance and not talk over marginalized groups when they talk about important issues.
this questin is gonna sound really silly,i'm sorry in advance. but, whis the florest different from the thousands of other horror movies based on tru stories out there? there are so amny movies based on places or events where real people commited suicice. the texas chainsaw massacre, that horor movie about mutants Chernobyll, and so amny movies about real locations or events. why were those movies fine and the florest is ofenssive?
those movies are not fine and people did speak up against them—you can easily research this yourself. i’m using my resources to shed light on an issue people need to know. you derailing it and accusing me of not caring about all those other instances is just that—an assumption.
plus i was like 12 when some of those movies came out and had very few of the resources, experiences, and knowledge that i do today. like give me a break
So I saw someone mentioning boycotting the movie the forest but hadn't heard anything about why, googled it because I was curious and it brought me here. I thought you might like to know you're first in Google about that. Go you!
idk how to feel about that LOL but thanks for bringing it to my attention haha!
hello! first of all I totally agree with your post about "the forest" (i didn't know about this movie and i'm glad i read your post), and I'd like to share with you (and you followers) the example of Lee Joon (a former kpop idol and now actor) who suffers from bipolar disorder. Your point about asian people not talking about their mental health issues made me think I could share this bc i know how much he inspired me to talk about my issues (sorry for my english)
never apologize for your english. i’m proud of you and i’m glad you felt brave enough to bring this to light. thank you.
Lots of foreigners go to Aokigahara to commit suicide as well, there is no reason why it's unreasonable to have a film with Americans set in a place in japan.
@slanteyechink explained an issue related to this better than i can in her faq here. this is about moving and getting a job in east asian countries but the parallels are still relevant:
“I want to live in (East Asian country) as a non-East Asian, is that problematic?”
I mean…. you’re really have to look at why you want to do so. Is it because you think the country is cool? You like the culture? That’s fetishism to me. You want to teach English/get a job there? Look, there is such thing as Western privilege even if you’re PoC. As a Westerner, you are far more likely to get a secure job and high positions with no credentials over a qualified, educated East Asian person from that country. I myself would have privilege over E.Asians from Asia as an American, but less so than say a White person. Especially if you speak English, because if you do a lot of companies will just do everything to cater to you and you won’t have to learn a lick of the native language. I know people who’ve lived in Hong Kong or Japan for years but can barely count to ten in that language.
“But what if I DO learn the language and respect the culture?”
It’s not about what you do there. It’s the fact that you HAVE the choice to not learn the language. It’s about the fact that you CAN (and most likely will) be totally unqualified and yet take jobs from E. Asians with vastly more education than you. Fuck, you can even be taking jobs from diasporic E. Asians (who are assumed to not speak English as well) who are just trying to reconnect with their homeland/culture. Our countries are not your playground, and why do you NEED to go there so badly?
And I will repeat for the umpteenth, this is an issue specific to Japan. There is NO reason for westerners to make the issue about them and, like slanteyechink says, why do you NEED to go there so badly ???

I deleted/blocked a shitload of ignorant askers, many of whom were raging white people trying to “school” me about racism lmao. If you pull this shit, I’m just gonna block you idgaf.
Aokigahara Forestis not somewhere to be afraid of. Aokigahara is not a frightening place. It’s a sad place. Movies like The Forest are turning it into a spooktacular, spiritually vengeful, white washing sleigh ride and people are letting that happen.
Aokigahara is not a place to be afraid of. So please don’t be. It’s such a sad, mournful place. It’s a place people go to end their lives. It’s not scary. It’s tragic.
Can I ask why you are even commenting on a Japanese Suicide Forest? You are not Japanese, you do not understand the mindset. You are a spoiled American. Look up Japanese history, more so what Japanese did to China and Vietnam people during WWII.
if you went back and read any of my ‘the forest’ tagged posts, you’d know that i was asked to do it. i also apologized and stated that i was wrong to speak out of line and make an issue specific to japan about east asian representation in america—the original author wrote it that way but i have amended it to bring light about facts specific to japan.
as for your ethnocentric bigotry, please refer to this post because i do not have the patience to deal with your level ignorance and hatefulness. you’re trying to make me...i don’t wanna say “relive” because it’s not quite the word since the experience is something god-awful my relatives went through. but you’re a fucking shithead for it.
you assuming i’m “spoiled” just because i’m american is just that—an ignorant assumption. my parents had to run from a horrific war where they witnessed people they lost only to go to another country that hated them and didn’t want them there. i live in a country where i am constantly made fun of and made to feel shameful for being who i am—god forbid i wear an ao dai. then when i visit vietnam, i’m made to feel shameful for being american. you speaking from a mindset that’s ignorant about diasporic e/se asians is inappropriate so you’d do well to shut the fuck up.
and FUCK YOU for thinking you can come at me like this. take your shitty ethnocentrism and shove it up your ass.
What's wrong with romanticizing a forest? I get everything else your post said though
the problem is that it’s not just any forest. it’s a forest where japanese people go to commit suicide and it’s connected to an issue that is specific to japan. white people have no right to accessorize the forest.
