How many of you out there know that this picture, this iconic moment, is actually sexual assault?  No, really, this sailor, was “grabbing every female he could find and kissing them all” according to the photographer himself.  There are just… so many things wrong with that in and of itself!  Here we have a person with a great deal of power and privilege - he’s a man, he’s white, and he’s behaving in heteronormative ways each of which is powerful all by themselves and then we add the fact that he actually has institutionalized power by virtue of his being a member of the armed services in uniform and the guy’s basically unstoppable.  All that power and privilege meant that he was not only permitted to run down the street sexually assaulting every female-presenting person he saw but also was praised for it.  Based on accounts of the day not one person tried to stop him, not one person had anything negative to say to him about that, and he was immortalized in one of the world’s most iconic photos in a positive way, forever reinforcing this behavior for everyone who hears about it.

Imagine if it had just been some random guy walking down the street kissing people for no apparant reason without the institutionalized power of the navy and wartime heroic propaganda at his back - there’s a good chance somebody would have at least tried to stop him or said something negative about it.  Imagine a woman walking down the street kissing all the men she saw - again, there’s a good chance such actions would received negative attention.  Imagine a Man of Color, any Person of Color really doing something like this - again, lots of negative attention, in fact, a Man of Color walking down the street kissing random white women would probably get arrested and/or shot/lynched/murdered.  Finally let’s imagine some behavior that’s not heteronormative - a female presenting person kissing female presenting people, a male-presenting person kissing male-presenting people, someone who’s obviously non-binary in some way kissing anyone, a known trans person going around kissing anyone, etc - again, lots of negative attention, probably some sort of physical violence of some sort.

All that negative attention for all those imaginary people in all those other possible scenarios would be because walking down the street forcing kisses on random strangers without their consent is sexual assault.  But make it a privileged, powerful individual sexually assaulting people who don’t have such privilege and power and all of a sudden it becomes “cute” and “endearing,” not only positive in some way but also not negative at all.  So not negative, in fact, that I’m willing to bet that if that nurse had tried to defend herself against this attack, had maybe even gotten physically violent, had maybe tried to report this assault to anyone she would have been treated like she’s making too big of a deal out of it, like it’s actually not an issue at all, like she’s the one behaving in a way that she shouldn’t, instead of the person assaulting her.

This right here is rape culture in action.  This right here is how privilege and power coalesce into one giant heap of shit that makes it easy for people to sexually assault, sexually harass, abuse and rape.  The worst part about it, I think, is that it’s so easy that certain kinds of sexual assault/abuse/harassment are actually so normalized that nobody even stops to think about what’s really going on.  The woman in this picture has been violated, her basic right to consent has been ignored, she has been abused in a very serious way and yet for most of us that’s just not something we even think about, it’s not something that it even occurs to us to consider.  That kind of normalizing of violence is what helps to perpetuate rape culture.  We have to get to a place where it’s not normalized or nothing will ever change.

It’s grossed me out since the moment I learned of what really happened that day, even before I knew what rape culture actually was. I have a hard time looking at this photo without feeling sick to my stomach.

Dude? Fuck you. Unfollow me if you feel that way. That women’s bodies are public property is rape culture and illustrated quite well by this “iconic” photo. Shut the fuck up. You clearly don’t have an ounce of understanding. What would have happened if this woman had pushed this sailor away? She would have been chided for making a big deal out of nothing, possibly targeted as being “unpatriotic” or whatever the buzzword was back then.

Thank you so much for proving that you are just another guy who doesn’t get it.

Anyone who uses the word ‘delusional’ to describe people they disagree with, and anyone who defends sexual assault can go to hell. I got sexually assaulted in a bar by a soldier once. Dude grabbed my tits and tried to kiss me. The response when I slapped him? “He fought for this country, don’t be a bitch!”.

Fuck you man. Fuck you.

this picture always made me mad uncomfortable for some reason. look at her body language. ew. the fact that we glorify this image as “cute” as a culture is really disgusting.

Not to mention that sexual violence — and therefore, rape culture — is perpetrated against WOC at statistically higher rates than white women. Or that white men are the most likely to be inflicting this violence. - Bo

Whenever soldiers commit sexual assault, rape, or other violence that is perpetuated against mostly women, it’s for two reasons. He’s either thrilled that he’s alive and doesn’t have to fight and he’s celebrating, or he was traumatized by the war and was acting out. It’s never because he’s an entitled privileged asshole who see women as public property there to receive his sex. But keep denyinv rape culture, guys! There’s nobody out there who thinks rape and assault are acceptable sometimes! A reminder that very little has changed over the past 70 years.

[TW: Rape culture, sexual assault]

I hate this fucking photo.

A few years ago I thought this was cute. I even think this image was my desktop background for a while, when I was younger. Now that I think about it, this is assault. The scary thing is, how much of a rape culture are we submerged in, that an image depicting assault is thought of as romantic and praised? This is rape culture in action.

Seriously, fuck that guy. He doesn't even deserve to be called sifu—he's as wise as a bull's shit. Just because your'e of a certain minority group, doesn't mean you can't be a part of colorism/shadeism. If anything, that makes you more susceptible to colorism/shadeism because of all of the internalized racism that exists and the pressures for people to be lighter skin (skin bleaching, anyone?), especially for women. It's in every racial group and it stinks ass. #you just got psychology'd

Santoine:

Wow.

I think I’m practically done with this. Maybe I’ll watch it next season. I dunno, but yeah. This is disappointing.

Guess this is a personal wake up call.

You see, I am very sensitive to things like this. Like I notice them immediately and this is why I don’t think I’m ever going to sit down and watch LOK. I was going to give season 1 a go but not anymore.

“Hey, hey guys!  Look, we only budgeted so much brown ink for the cartoon, and Korra’s screen time means we’re using all of it up, so uh, can we just substitute some colors for the secondary characters?”

“Um. Sure… wait, isn’t this all colored by computer now?”

“Uh, um, well, we only have so many brown pixels.  Yeah, that’s it.  Hey, hey, don’t ask questions now, we put a brown woman on your show, aren’t you happy seeing her on screen?”

“Why is she always faintbending and getting hurt?  Does she actually get to make any choices or growth or learn anything for herself?”

“HEY! She’s on screen isn’t she?!?   Now check out our next story arc where Mako saves everybody! It’ll be awesome!”

I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO SAW IT

I KNEW I WASN’T *THAT* CRAZY

Lol anyone else want to point out how Kya’s hair went from looking like dreadlocks to generic white woman hair?

they changed her facial features too look at her nose

Yep. Had a little bubbly end to it and now it’s just. Nothing.

Much of this controversy has been playing out on Tumblr and involving the community of social justice bloggers. I agree that Laci’s comments, especially those regarding Islam, were unnecessarily negative and probably emotionally-charged. I think the right thing for Laci to do would be to conduct her research on what her critics have been saying and make an informed apology for her comments. However, everything that Laci’s critics (and Anita Sarkeesian’s critics as well) are calling attention to can no longer be the main concern of these controversies. Nobody is going to listen to or engage in informed debate about the problematic aspects of Sarkeesians’s project or Laci Green’s comments once a threat has been made against their lives. This anger, while it may be well-meaning or deserved, is counter productive to intelligent, informed discussion about identity, race, religion, gender, and sexuality. These are sensitive topics, but reacting with anger, stalking, and threats completely shuts down the important conversation that needs to be happening about such sensitive topics! When the same Tumblr bloggers who get angry over Laci Green’s comments also scream “Die, Cis Scum” rather than explaining what cis-privilege is, are they really any better than the Westboro Baptist Church with their “God Hates Fags” mottos?

Forreal tho.

She was young and ignorant. She apologized. She owned up to her mistake. Can you move on to people who are actually targeting minority groups instead of our own allies, please? You're wasting your energy by yelling "PRIVILEGE!" Yes, Green has privilege. No, she's not using it against you.

I understand she's done a lot for people in terms of sex education, probably more than you have. That video was from 2009. It's 2012 and she's developed beyond using such slurs. Believe it or not, people do grow up. If this is your response to maturity, then you don't deserve to be an activist. Like the rest of us, Green has more growing up to do. The difference between she and the people who don't give a shit at all about social justice is that she actually wants to continue growing. So kindly shut the fuck up and let her do her thing. It's one thing to criticize someone, it's quite another to act like the trolls and jags that target Anita Sarkeesian.
