I knew it was a mistake to start taking Solas and Sera together for the party banter. Most of the time it’s just like, sheesh you two get a room. And when you find out that fenedhis lasa means “suck a wolf’s dick”, that the Egg practically told her to suck his dick Bioware y u do dis, don’t put these thoughts in my head I can’t deal with this right now… This stupid game is making me ship Solas with Sera. I don’t even like Sera.

lmao you put this under a cut and thought no one was gonna put you on blast?

first of all, you nasty second of all, shipping a lesbian with a man is nasty in any context anyway but you’re using that phrase as justification? you nasty heifer third, fuck you

for followers who don’t know: sera is a lesbian woman and solas is a cishet man who hates his own people, has some fucked up entitlement issues over literally every non-human race, is hellbent on destroying the world, and is emotionally/verbally abusive to his elf girlfriend so this makes shipping the two all the more fucked up.

I painted a thing.

Strength tarot card, Dragon Age.

I also wrote a short thing attached to it. Because I can do that and I’m a nerd.

Fen'Dalen A short story.

Ellana’s skin was ebony, a sharp contrast to the ivory markings that framed high cheekbones and almond eyes. Black elves were rare. He had seen a few in the fade, fewer still in flesh. Among the servants and slaves of Orlais and Tevinter, dark elves were eternally fashionable and a symbol of wealth purely for cosmetic reasons. City elves envied the mutation while slaves were relieved from the torture awaiting their black cousins. The Dalish looked to legend and interpreted black clan members as pranks, tricks or blessings by Fen'Harel, the Dread Wolf, hence their name - Fen Da'len, or, Little Wolf Child.

The Dalish were almost right. Black elves had not existed in the time of Arlathan. They existed only after Fen'Harel weaved the veil between worlds; Just as the elves were shuttered from immortality, so too the pigment was a mutation consequential of the veil’s creation.

Black lashes outlined by the white slaver mask closed, eyes opened to steady the hedge mage’s gaze. Ellana’s eyes, he thought, as he did many times before. The color of the veil. The colors of her irises even shifted, mirrors reflecting a magical tapestry he had woven with his own two hands and was bound to until the end of worlds.

Solas tried to imagine what she looked like behind the ancient slaver’s mask. He tried to imagine what her eyes looked like before the Conclave. He tried to imagine her with pale skin. He tried to imagine who she would be before the veil.

He couldn’t.

EDIT: Quick note, because I was shocked to find a LOT of people suddenly reblog and claim this picture and story was racist - of which it absolutely isn’t.

I placed the story and picture within the context of Dragon Age’s story - and I’ve yet to see an ancient elf ever be depicted as black. They are all white skinned or golden - even in those old artifact paintings iwthin the game - unless the creators suddenly show something else entirely. In fact, there are only three other darker skinned elves in the game of which are Fenris, Zevran, and a rando in DA:I that hangs in the castle. So look at the story in context, not in our real world.

‘Look at this white girl fan exoticising race.’ - I’m not. In fact, I’m exemplifying a very deep issue within the story itself. Solas wants to bring things back to ‘The way they were’ - you know, when all elves probably looked alike, had magic, and there was no such thing as diversity. However, to do so, would essentially erase this story of Lavellan. Or Fenris. Or Zevran who, like many other things, would not exist were it not for the veil’s erection. The idea that their skin color would make them exotic or mistreated within that world? Of COURSE they would be. Hell, look at how we mistreat our own fellow humans who are considered ‘others’, and we aren’t even in a fantasy setting.

Also, May I remind you, Solas is a racist in DA:I. He is a flaming disgusting kind of gross racist who calls Iron Bull ‘smart for Qunari’, outs any human-like Elf, things all humans are war mongering violent dicks, and insults anyone who isn’t him. He’s a jerk. So that above there, that story, from his POV? YEah. Kind of written from the POV of a racist.

So don’t sit there and point out how disgusting I am when you are ignoring A) story context, B) character context and c) everything else in between and all over. Its easy to attack and belitte. Not so easy to step back and think ‘Oh… I see the fuller picture.

PS - Not that I have to prove anything to those who accused, insulted, mislead and slandered, but I am a proud protestor and supporter of BLM and a very loud advocate for equal rights.

*drops mic*

So this is something that came across my dashboard, and I’m going to address this because this is important:

My skin color, darling, is not a mutation.

I’m not going to bother talking about the power of words and the impact of certain narratives on real life because we all know that here. We know that because we complain about the things we hate and we most certainly will call out the things that hurt us. Because words have power. Words can call things into being and make them real. Words have teeth.

And words, when jumbled up into phrases like

Just as the elves were shuttered from immortality, so too the pigment was a mutation consequential of the veil’s creation.

Only serve to solidify the view that MY SKIN COLOR is a curse. An abomination. A mutation. A deviation from the norm. Other, ugly, undesirable, unloveable, unforgiveable. And you, my sweet darling, have just contributed to centuries of beauty standards that have been piled mercilessly upon my back. My hips. My face. My ass. My lips. My eyes.

My skin.

Call it a fantasy. Call it “not your words,” not the words you’d use to describe me. You can claim that this was just your iteration of a Solas who not only doesn’t see modern Thedosians as living, sentient things who have the right to live, but also thinks that skin like mine is as much an abomination as the Dalish.

Try as you might, but that came out of your mind. That idea was yours. And you can also say that it wasn’t written for me, or for people like me, but for people who just want to think about Solas. Go ahead and add your story to the pile of “explorations” of race in a “creative” context, just one more drabble in the mountain of racist, exotifying and damnable fiction that solidifies the idea that people like me SHOULD be othered. And if you should defend this on the grounds that “this is just [your interpretation],” understand that this has been said before. Understand what you’re doing, if not thinking critically about the consequences of your work. And if you decide that this isn’t really racist, and that connecting words like “Black skin” to “mutation” doesn’t have any real impact on actual people of color, then know that that has been said before, too. By people I’m sure you wouldn’t really want to associate yourself with.

But don’t feel too bad, my dear.

You really do have plenty of company in that regard.

WALLAHI and had the unmitigated GALL to try and say it wasn’t racist. AGBAYA!!! Mschewwwwwwww

UNFUCKING ACCEPTABLE.

Look I rant about this stuff a lot, and I’m sure I come across angry and strong, but this shit is exhausting and hurtful. It’s so, so hard. It makes us shake, it makes us cry, it depresses us.

There are days where speaking out leads me to taking my anti-anxiety meds just to get through the day.

Yes we are angry about this treatment, but we are also hurting.

If you’re a white “ally” and member of fandom and you step back and let black women bear this burden alone without boosting our voices and calling out your fellow white creators and consumers, than please stop thinking you want to help us. If you can’t even take the time to hit the reblog button, than you just prove that you don’t stand with or for us, so m please don’t pretend or tell yourself that you do.

CALL OUT OR GET OUT.

Ok so multiple black people, who I’m pretty sure are more knowledgable about racism than you, just told you that this was incredibly racist.

Because it is.

And instead of recognizing that what you wrote was, in fact, racist, *despite your intentions*, and instead of apologizing, you jump back with “wahhhh I’m being bullied! I support BLM and equal rights how dare you?”

Just stop.

Take your faux support and go away. Stop claiming to support black people when you CONTINUE to actively create harm because you wanna justify yourself and your racist story and your racist interpretation of canon which is fucking racist.

why is it so hard for white people to just take a step back, read the conversation, realize it’s not about them and their feelings, and apologize
