I have zero patience for people who mock SJWs in any context.

No one really identifies as a social justice warrior anymore, and now this label is just crudely and forcefully smacked onto bloggers who make social commentary in general. By anti-SJWs, more often than not.

And if you need a reminder, anti-SJW bloggers are people that attack the marginalized and their allies for speaking up about systemic oppression and erase all of their experiences with said oppression by saying “You’re just exaggerating.”

So please, if you think it’s funny to mock social justice warriors, do me a favor and unfollow me.

like ive been attacked as an “sjw” for talking about how i, as an individual, hate the person who raped me

I dislike people who dedicate their lives to mocking/insulting/bullying other people. Since I joined Tumblr, I see (most) SJW’s in a negative light because the ones I came across are mean and they apply social justice to trivial issues.  I had some bad experience with one. Was insulted and called anti-black because I don’t think drawing a certain purple eyed, tri-colored spiky haired, card game anime pharaoh with a lighter skin tone is wrong, especially since said character has a canon design with light skin.

Also, I’ve heard of how many of them drove a fellow user to commit (attempted) suicide when she drew a chubby character skinny.

“I had a bad experience with an ess-jay-doubleyoo one time when they pointed out lightening the skin of an actually canonically tan ancient Egyptian character is gross

so all social commentary is devalued by default in my eyes.”

First strike was talking nonsense on my post. Strike two was talking some bullshit about Yami Yugi/Atem never being tan, or implying his pale skin during most of the show is his natural skintone. Strike three is just your fucking bafflingly willful ignorance of shit right in front of your eyes.

“i had bad experiences with sjws because they didn’t like me being racist—i just wanted to whitewash a canonically egyptian character boohoo”

if you’re getting defensive by going: “why are these people calling me racist? i’m not racist. stop bullying me.” instead of thinking: “hmm, a lot of people of color are calling me out. i should stop, listen, apologize, and fix it.” like it’s that easy—think of it as any healthy relationship. if you can’t be critical about yourself and think about why poc are taking precious time out of their day to try to educate your bigoted ass, then don’t draw poc. keep us out of your shitty art because you’re a racist fake ally.

People shit on clicktivism or online social justice shit a lot but here’s the thing:

I’ve been on this garbage website for three years as of this month and I can say with absolute certainty that a lot of what I now know about intersectionality and gender and race and class and ableism can be directly traced to this website. It’s because tumblr (and Twitter to a lesser extent because of the character limit) is a really accessible way to see mini essays explaining shit to me from tons of different perspectives.

Like you get these really digestible posts that clearly spell out either theoretical concepts or their practical applications. And I sure as shit don’t get that in school or in my daily interactions.

I feel like people shit on clicktivism because they think it stops there – with me reading stuff on a screen. But it doesn’t because I for one take the knowledge I gain here and transfer it into the world at large: my interactions with my friends and family, my conduct in the classroom, and the entertainment media I consume.

Real-world revolution has never once just fallen out of the sky, guys. It always starts with an exchange of ideas. Tumblr and platforms like it facilitate that exchange.

So like don’t ever let anyone tell you that you’re less of an activist because you started learning shit from social media. Social media is a gift to activism.

Tbh I’m getting increasingly suspicious of mainstream media’s endorsements of social justice rhetoric

I’m getting increasingly suspicious of how the media focuses its sj discourse around privilege and microaggressions (which suck, don’t get me wrong, but they’re symptoms of centuries of historical violence.. they aren’t the sources of the real problems)

I see this, I see places like buzzfeed and other avenues of pop culture fixating on “privilege” as a sort of luck system where society rewards people for being born a certain way, but in the explanations, the means by which this happens are always mysterious and vague. There’s a refusal to name anyone as active agents within a system, or to admit that these systems materially benefit some at the expense of others… its always treated as some weird rpg stat system where being white gives you +5 ability to find a job, rather than an actual hierarchy of supremacy where people subjugate others for power and resources.

It’s always compressed, made into easy problems with easy solutions. Here are 12 things you shouldn’t say to a black person. Make sure to not say Racist Things. You may have been born into privilege but it’s okay, just accompany yourself with POC of color™ and don’t say the Racist Things and by being nice, you can somehow(?) help weaken institutional racism… or something.

So it focuses on these small, specific manifestations of oppression instead of more direct forms of violence that would require a huge change to fix… stuff like, for example, the entire prison system. That’s not something that anyone could individually change by Saying The Right Things. It would require collective, organized action of a radical (or possibly even revolutionary) nature.

I’m weary of the way capitalism absorbs radical thought and repurposes it, creating simulacra wherein no real change is actually required.

what does this have to do w capitalism though?

It’s abt what is easier to sell people

Also the way hegemonic systems internalize and coop liberatory discourses

This. And it’s 100% a capitalist thing.

We want to feel good about ourselves even though we live in a violently unjust world. If blissful ignorance doesn’t cut it than easy answers in the next best thing. And that is a commodity the media is very much ready to sell us. Articles like ‘12 things not to say to a black person’ and ‘8 ways you have male privilege’ sell that sence of ‘I’m still a good person’ while ignoring the deliberate and systematic maintenance of unjustice. Ignoring that the question in a violently unjust world isn’t ‘am I a good person?’, but ‘can I (with others) make this world genuinely less unjust?’. But ‘10 ways we could destroy the prison industrial complex if we all got off our arses today’ doesn’t generate good click bait and as such doesn’t sell adds. And so we get a declawed, safe, individualist version of social justice packaged and sold for mass consumption.

It’s like that filter for your facebook pic to show that you totes support lgbt people while not even thinking for a single second about the real issues they face. Thus demonstrating to other people how much you care, and how much of a Good Person™ you are without having to put in any fucking effort.

True, the examples are endless and 99% of them are

  • initiatives that focus on buying a product
  • initiatives by a website that sells adds
  • initiatives by established bureaucratic charities that need a high number of likes, page-views etc to justify their expensive PR departments.
  • copy-campaigns inspired by one of the above

The issue isn’t really whatever new form the next form consumer buzzwork activism takes, the issue is how we escape this pattern.

Don’t get me wrong but I’m astutely aware of that. It’s just that that’s the million dollar question, to which I haven’t even the slightest beginning of an answer to. That particular example has been annoying me for some time and it came to mind when I saw this post and thought I’d make an addition instead of silently reblogging. I didn’t mean to start a derail or anything.

Don’t worry, I don’t think you’re derailing.

I think the first step of the answer, though by no means the last, is talking about the fact that it’s happening, both the manifestations of it and the larger problem. We currently live in a time where media and corporations clearly wants to control all the flows of information online but aren’t succeeding. Stories can spread even if the media ignores them, as the Black Lives Matter movement has demonstrated above all other movements. We also live in a time where we can talk back to media very publically and directly confront the selective social justice they’re posting.

All that requires a very vocal critical look at media, but that is something we can learn from each other. Even if you or I don’t notice that an article is simplifying and draining a movement because we’re too exited about finally getting some media coverage at all, someone else will notice and we can hear about it from them.

it occasionally occurs to me that pretty much all sj issues can be summed up as “don’t hurt people” with a sidenote of “you can hurt people on accident, but they’re still hurt so apologize and learn from it”

basically at the core of it, it’s similar to “if you bump into a stranger, apologize and try not to do it again”. And people not only debate it, but some go out of their way to bump into strangers and scream “Awww are you hurt?! are you crying!! did I upset you!!” as a weird hobby

im obviously super into social justice culture but over the past year its turned everyone into self righteous dickheads who expect everyone to be perfect angels and like, hey listen, literally no one is. yes definitely call out bigotry and awful systems whenever you can but nitpicking people’s histories and personalities is so malicious and unnecessary and yall do it to feel better about yourselves and thats gross. find healthier ways to be positive in your own life rather than dissecting other people for the thrill of thinking you’re a better person

everybody on this website says “we’re all problematic! we all grow and change”

so….. thats why you try to drag every single person who fucks up off this website, no matter how minor the offense, and no matter if they apologize or not

half yall are not for social justice or self improvement. most yall just haply you found a “justified” way to bully people

ive been on tumblr for 4 years and i have seen SO many people literally bullied off this website over small shit

yall do the MOST and bully people in the name of social justice. yall dont even attempt to educate or correct anyone

you just see somebody fucking up and decide they gotta be slandered for all eternity

the social justice community on tumblr has a bullying problem. also yall believe anything thats said about another tumblr user

i could call anybody problematic right now, and there will immediately be a witch hunt for them

again, this community deadass has a bullying problem and yall think being problematic is justification to bully someone

and not only do yall do what i mentioned before. if some of yall see a user getting called out, you will then dig into that persons archive to find more problematic shit they did, even if it was years ago, just so u can get some sort of brownie points i guess????

thats so childish & ridiculous!!!!

u kno how when u were a kid u could ride in the car and be totally unaware of anything goin on around the car and just be chill

but then u took driver’s ed and u started learning all the rules and now even if ur just in the passenger seat u can’t help noticing all the shitty things ppl do on the road?

that’s what social justice is like

… that’s actually a really good analogy

well done

i used to think it was fun and interesting to get into debates about feminism or racism, or in general challenge people’s bigotry and prejudice and call them out. but recently it’s become a burden. it’s a chore now. i no longer want to debate about whether or not i should have basic human rights, this shouldn’t even be a fucking issue anymore. i no longer go into these discussions with an open mind and a light-hearted demeanor, now i’m fucking furious. i should not have to defend my humanity at every single step, repeatedly and constantly. i’m done.

The arguments against social justice on here are so hilarious they’re like “this website is so hell bent on being decent and respectful….like….its to the point where I’m actually AFRAID to be racist??? Like…I might get HATE MESSAGES for my active hatred & desire to inflict pain upon innocent oppressed people….I might be dragged for being a racist homophobe…..that’s oppression right there,,,,”

you know what’s really gross about this is before she was just parodying social justice people

now she’s literally telling them that their identities don’t matter, or that people who are proud of their identities and seek others like themselves don’t have any personality.

go spill a bucket of pig shit on yourself and grow a bunch of mushrooms, you’re a three week old diaper.

how is being a teenager a “tumblr identity”

being between the ages of 13 and 20 are made up dude it’s an invention of this society

open your eyes, become enlightened

YEAH IF YOU LIST YOUR SEXUAL ORIENTATION, YOU’RE A FUCKING SJW

Are you seriously mad for people listing what their a fan of like”???

anti-sj people are pathetic.

Angry white kids slay me. trying WAAAY too hard to get brownie points from /r/TumbleInAction at this point.

Of course said simple bitch is Plebcomics.

Wow, so expressing your interests in shows you like, claiming a political identity, relating to others through your sexuality or enjoying talking to people in your age range is building up a false sense of kinship and makes you an evul soceal juztic3 warr1or according to anti-sj.

And they claim to be the bastion of logic and reason?
