Remember the names
Do not any of these writers go unchecked
This is legit though. If you missed the drama these dudes have been fucking awful to the female/AOC members of the show and been HORRIBLE to fans on twitter. Like actually getting into gaslighty fucking fights with viewers. They are an embarrassment.
oh my god, brad buckner and eugenie ross-leming were involved with sleepy hollow? jfc, i’m sorry y’all had to deal with those racist hacks too. they literally wrote an episode of supernatural with a black woman in a dog collar as a servant to a white dude.
Well that explains a whole fucking lot
OMG, I remember that episode. I was so livid, and I wasn’t even watching SPN anymore when I saw that mess.
minorities shouldn’t have to lose their few heroes for the sake of proving a point to a privileged audience
You know, when I look at this whole thing with Sleepy Hollow, I can’t help but be strongly reminded of the M.A.N.T.I.S. fiasco.
M.A.N.T.I.S. came out back in 1994, so if you’re under 30 you probably don’t remember the hype, but it was a pretty big deal at the time: the first superhero television series with an African American lead. The pilot episode introduced the titular hero’s origin story as a black medical doctor shot in the back by a trigger-happy cop (sound familiar?), who subsequently invents a super-powered exo-suit while attempting to cure the resulting paralysis. The plot didn’t shy away from racial politics, and the cast featured a number of prominent black supporting characters.
To the surprise of many, the pilot was picked up for development. That’s where the problems started.
When the cast list for the series proper was released, it transpired that virtually all of the black supporting characters had been recast with white actors, leaving only the protagonist and his love interest. The premise, too, backed away from the pilot, refocusing the racially charged narrative into a more generic “little guys versus evil corporation” concept.
It didn’t stop there, either. Throughout its short run, the series was the subject of repeated studio interference, including a mid-season retooling to further tone down the show’s already-defanged politics in favour of introducing more fantasy adventure elements.
Character emphasis began to shift as well, progressively sidelining the show’s protagonist in favour of giving more focus episodes to white supporting characters. in one widely criticised story arc, the hero spends two entire episodes imprisoned and unconscious while his (white) sidekick takes over as dramatic lead in order to spearhead the rescue effort.
The real kick in the teeth, however, came in the season finale, which - in an unprecedented move for mid-1990s serial television - kills off both the protagonist and his love interest. Yeah, you read that right: the show killed off its own protagonist. The guy whose name is literally the title of the show! Indeed, by taking out his girlfriend in the same episode, it successfully removed every remaining black speaking role in one fell swoop.
It’s unclear whether these deaths were meant to be permanent, or what the plan for continuing the story - if any - might have been, as the show was not renewed for a second season.
I’d like to think that network television has gotten better since then, but… well.
thanks for this, we need this history lesson.
The ‘’I deserve better’’ squad
do you ever see spoilers for a show you don’t watch anymore and just
The sleepy hollow finale
Thank you!
One of my favorite quotes: “The problem with most people is they would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism.”
Reblogging this as an addendum to my Hamilton criticisms.
abbie mills is dead. another woman of color that dies on tv. i wish yall got mad af when a poc dies just as much you people get mad when your white lgbt gets murdered cause bury your pocs has been an issue since the beginning of pop culture
THEY! KILLED! ABBIE????? WHAT THE FUCK?!!!!
HOW BITCH
i have no reason to watch this show anymore what the fuck
Abbie Mills in “Dawn’s Early Light”
if you want to see white fangirls true racist colors, watch what happens when a black girl kisses their white fav
Some TV shows to name a few: - The Flash - Teen Wolf - Vampire Diaries - Twisted - Saved By The Bell (only lasted 1 episode due to angry fan-mail) -Sleepy Hallow -etc
HOLLYWOOD: - Robert Pattinson - Zac Efron - Justin Bieber - Leonardo DiCaprio - etc
Or even going in a fictional relationship tag here on Tumblr between a Black Female Character and the White Male Character.
LOL & they thought Crane’s reaction to meeting Daniel was bad. Imagine him walking in on this.
This show.
WEARING HATS INDOORS.
#ichabod in no way is a fan of glee#the most unbelievable thing that has ever happened on sleepy hollow#THE DISINGENUOUS MUMMERY OF THE MUSICAL PERFORMANCES#IF YOU WERE TO BE SO GENEROUS AS TO CALL THEM SUCH#ARE AS OFFENSIVE IN THEIR EXECUTION#AS THEY ARE IN THE ABSURD VALUE THEY PLACE ON BASE SENTIMENTALITY ( delazeur)
I direct your attention to this review at io9 which includes the observation: “Ichabod also admits, ‘I watched the finale of Glee,’ with the face of a man who is telling you what happened when he was wasted and lost the remote and it was Glee or silence, and he chose wrong, and he’s sorry.”
Ichabod Crane saw the finale of Glee, and he has regrets.
You’ll learn, as you get older, that rules are made to be broken.
Remember the Bait and Switch that happened in Heroes? Remember how people were really excited to have a diverse cast that were active in the storyline? Then season after season the number of people of colour were removed from the cast one by one until the last Season there were only 3 POC in the main cast
This is not the first time this happened, people are just noticing these things quicker and speaking up when they see the early stages of it like Sleepy Hollow.
Mod: A
Also, the show Franklin and Bash did this as well with all their actors of color until the final season (that did poorly btw) was an all white cast.
BONUS SCOOP: The show also will soon bring on founding father Thomas Jefferson, who is described as charismatic and intelligent.”
i’m about to start tweeting links and details about how sally hemings WAS FIFTEEN YEARS OLD.
and how she was related to his fucking wife.
and how she couldn’t consent because she was a slave.
did the writers just completely forget about that conversation that happened where abbie and frank—the black people—dropped some nuggets of information about this to ichabod?
why not introduce william lee, george washington’s personal valet/personal slave? he was with washinton constantly and would probably be such an interesting character.
i mean, jfc can we think out of the box here???
still trying to figure out when this show became whitey hollow
