Saw this regarding pewdiepie being dropped by disney due to his anti-Semitic jokes recently. And couldn’t have said it better.

 I’m so livid about this entire PewDiePie situation.

He’s been given so many chances, and yet he is still making loads of money with people protecting him and not once has he genuinely apologized or seemed sorry about the things he said. It’s always followed up with dubstep music, jumpcuts, and other sarcastic remarks and jokes.

The Firewatch creator also wants to take down Felix playthrough of the game, as well as ban him from buying/playing any other game by them and people are mad about that? Like, any sane god damn person would disassociate themselves with someone throwing the N-word around, as well as spreading anti-semitic bs

And some people will defend him with “Words are just words”, and I’m losing my shit over that. I’ve heard that excuse when using the n-word, the f-word and generally when saying other problematic shit. Words are NOT just fucking words. Words are what got humanity here, words are how we communicate, words are what keeps this fucking shit society moving. If you stand by the mentality of “Words just being words”, then you NEVER get to be emotionally affected by words every again. Because words are just words and hold no meaning or value to them right?

No, they fucking do, and the people who say this shit knows that, but it’s different when its racial slurs and general assholery, because they don’t want to look bad.

Words are not just words. Words hold meaning. Words hold history. 

Words define you. And if you throw them around without thinking twice and you don’t respect history and the people it affected and will affect, then you fucking don’t deserve an audience like the one Felix has.

Pewdiepie apologized, his show got cancelled, and the media is still bashing him. I fully realize that he said some very hurtful words, but I also realize that he made an honest mistake in judging how far he could push his jokes. As far as I’m concerned, if you continue to kick someone when they’re down and begging for forgiveness, you are a piece of shit, and can unfollow me right now. Many people defending Pewdiepie, argue that he has been wrongfully branded a Nazi, when the jokes in his movies don’t reflect his actual beliefs. But it honestly doesn’t matter if Pewdiepie personally believes in the tenants of Nazism. What he personally believes isn’t of great consequence. What matters is the outcome of his actions, and the outcome was that he, someone with a large platform, encouraged and validated white supremacists the internet over with his content during a time when Nazism and fascism and antisemitism are on the rise–particularly in gamer communities. And this was an outcome he didn’t make any significant effort to own or apologize for until there were financial repercussions for him. You don’t have to be an evil or even a bad person to do great harm to others, particularly if you have a lot of influence during a volatile period in history. Do not mitigate the damage he has done. Do not minimize the urgency of condemning these actions during times like these. To do so is to further enable antisemitism and even Nazism during a time when Jews are in increasing danger due to such ideology.

As a Jew witnessing a growing number of antisemitic incidents across the country–including swastikas drawn in public places and bomb threats to synagogues and Jewish community centers, who sees Jews in my family considering fleeing the country in the face of mounting antisemitism and fascist ideology, who wakes up from nightmares of living in a fascist America where I am hunted for being Jewish… I don’t want to hear it. If your silly internet idol is more important to you than the safety and lives of Jewish people, even Jewish people you claim to know and love in your own life…than you either truly don’t appreciate the gravity of the situation right now or you don’t actually care about Jewish people and you are part of the problem. Don’t normalise Nazis

I was reading this article this morning, about Disney cutting ties with PewDiePie, a YouTube star (I’ve never heard of him?) who had included antisemitic content in his videos. This guy has continually claimed that all the antisemitic content he’s produced (which includes statements such as ‘death to all Jews’ and ‘Hitler did absolutely nothing wrong’) is a joke, and that people who are offended simply don’t understand the context, suggesting that it’s ‘laughable’ that he might agree with these viewpoints. So far so unsurprising: we’ve heard all this before.

But at the bottom of the article it points out the response to these videos by the Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi website, which now describes itself as ‘the number 1 PewDiePie fansite’. The Daily Stormer stated: “He could be doing all this only to cause a stir things up and get free publicity […] Ultimately, it doesn’t matter, since the effect is the same; it normalizes Nazism, and marginalizes our enemies.”

The point is this: if you are making racist or antisemitic jokes, it doesn’t matter if you were only joking, or messing around, or that you would never subscribe to those views; the effect is the same. Regardless of whether you agree with what you are saying, you are emboldening, normalising and legitimising Nazis. You are permitting fascism to take root in our society. Jokes matter. This is where extreme views creep in, take hold and are normalised. Think about what you’re saying: words have power. Stop normalising Nazis.

This is exactly the kind of liberalism, “see both sides” bullshit I expect from the brother of someone who said “Anne Frank died of disease”.

It would be really nice if people could please stop claiming that it took an antisemitic joke for Disney to drop PewDiePie despite all his prior racist and misogynistic content.

PewDiePie has expressed antisemitic sentiments in his videos long before this incident with fiverr.

August 7, 2016: PewDiePie, wearing a Make America Great Again hat, begins his video with a swastika and other Nazi imagery, and uses a photo of Hitler as a segue between clips

September 24, 2016: In a video criticising YouTube policy, he shows a clip of Hitler giving a speech

October 15, 2016: PewDiePie posts swastikas drawn by his fans

December 8, 2016: PewDiePie wears a brown military uniform while watching a Hitler clip at the end of his video

Antisemitic website the Daily Stormer has also given PewDiePie praise for Nazi imagery in his videos, writing:

This latest video is unapologetically full-Nazi.

The guy has 52 million subscribers, compared to the number 2 YouTuber that has 30 million. He is arguably the most watched person on the planet.

And he is pushing hardcore GTKRWN materials.

In this video, he calls out the Jews for killing Jesus, and points out several times that Hitler did nothing wrong.

At the very least, he is making the masses comfortable with our ideas.

I hope he keeps doing this – staying chill, I mean. Not going too far. I think he’s aware that he’s eventually going to get banned – if he wasn’t ready for that, he wouldn’t be calling out the Jews head-on like this.”

So please understand that he’s targeted Jews in the past without major outrage or punishment. He’s used Nazi imagery as a joke in his videos before. The “death to all Jews” video that caused outrage wasn’t the first antisemitic video PewDiePie posted. He’s also racist and misogynistic and he should have been called out on these things and dropped a long time ago.

But his antisemitic content neither began nor ended with the Fiverr video.
