Lots of people batted an eye at the time.  Anti-hetalia backlash, especially from Jewish anime fans, was fucking huge.  And it didn’t stop them from invading convention spaces, showing up dressed as nazis, etc.  I heard a story from a friend that while they were at a convention a Jewish kid had a panic attack over a group of Hetalia fans that were dressed as nazis and heiling and shit and the Jewish kid got kicked out of the con for “making a scene.”  I don’t remember the con, but it was in Minnesota.  Hetalia has a large part of the blame for the modern “anime right.”  It certainly didn’t directly cause them, hell, most of them probably aren’t Hetalia fans, but it’s because of Hetalia that they learned they could be openly and brazenly fascist and the American anime community would protect them for it instead of shunning them.

Also, it’s libel, not slander, since it’s written, not spoken, and in this case, the charge would more likely be defamation, since calling someone a white supremacist is impugning their character, rather than lying about something specific they’ve said or done.

Libel laws are typically reserved for public figures, the press, or someone with enough power and reach to actually damage someone’s life and livelihood, not some random Tumblr user. The courts are pretty loathe to actually find someone guilty of libel unless there’s proof of real, tangible adverse effects on the person’s life. After all, ruling in favor of everyone who has ever been lied about on the internet could do serious damage to free speech, free expression, and the free press.

So again, calling someone a white supremacist on the internet probably won’t get you sued for libel, and even if it did, any judge worth their salt would laugh the case out of court.

i had a discussion today with a friend who was genuinely trying to understand why people are working so hard to ID the charlottesville nazis and contact their employers. “but won’t that just make them more desperate and violent?” they asked. “if they get fired from their jobs or kicked out of school? if they think they have nothing to lose?”

and i said, “i don’t know. maybe. but right now, these motherfuckers think they can be nazis on the weekend.”

like, i somewhat understood my friend’s hesitance re: doxxing, because doxxing is so often a tool of evil. but these motherfuckers think they can show up to a white supremacist rally on saturday where people got fucking murdered by white supremacists, and then on monday they can go back to the IT desk and log into outlook and answer their fucking office phone. they think they can show up to a rally on saturday with a shield and a helmet and beat black teenagers with fucking sticks in a parking garage, and on monday they can be back on campus, taking notes in accounting. these putrid pieces of human garbage think they can be nazis all weekend, and then on thursday they can go to the professional development workshop with the department and enjoy those brownies that diane brought in.

No, you did not just read about a racist protest that took place in the 1950s.
