Not American but if I had to take a wild guess I’d say right of conquest. The land as a whole didn’t exist as an actual governed country before, it was occupied by various warring tribes from Canada all the way down to the southern tip of South America; Europeans showed up and either killed or assimilated the various tribes and claimed the land as their own and set up their own form of government.
As far as “owning” the United States itself goes, I don’t see how you can argue that any other people but white people own it, considering it didn’t even exist before them. I guess you could argue whether or not the land itself belongs to them but if you want to do that, why stop there, every country on earth likely took or lost territory to another group at some point or other, why not argue for them having their land back as well?
Land is just land and it belongs to itself, until humans arrive and create a society/civilization on it. Europeans arrived in America and settled to the North. Upon exploration of the land they later encountered the so called “Native Americans”. Native Americans were also tribes who arrived and settled in America, more to the Mid and South, (maybe because maybe the North was too cold for them?) But they were nomads, like their ancestors who came all the way from Siberia and around.. There wasn’t a civilization on this land so to speak, until people brought it. Europeans had more vision and were more advanced and thus created a civilization modeled after the one they lived in back in Europe. So America belongs to the people who created society/civilization on it, and their descendants.
And I should add the Spanish did about the same, with all of America.

You seem to be under the misapprehension that weapons=rifles, and that a bow and arrow cannot be used to build empires. There were already great empires in the Americas before Columbus landed. Contact with him spread devastating illnesses like fire over a dry prairie. Look at depictions of what the Mound Builders of Indiana/Ohio/Illinois likely lived like, and then see what plague and smallpox destroyed. Europeans landed in the New World and started the equivalent of the Black Death’s arrival in the 1340′s— imagine if a determined, well-armed, ruthless enemy had followed the black death and “conquered” all that the disease had cleared. There’s nothing there that suggests a definitive superiority of European culture— it’s just good timing.
