A Tale of Three Cities dir. Mabel Cheung (2015)

Based on the courtship of actor Jackie Chan’s parents, A Tale of Three Cities tells the story of Fang Daolong and Chen Yuerong who met in Wuhu during the Second Sino-Japanese War in the 1930s, were separated in Shanghai during the Chinese Civil War in the 1940s, and finally reunited in Hong Kong in the 1950s.

In the scene where Sean starts talking about his dead wife and her farting antics the lines were ad-libbed by Robin Williams, which is why Matt Damon is laughing so hard. The scene took everyone by surprise. According to Damon in the DVD commentary, this caused the cameraman to laugh so hard that the camera can be seen moving up and down slightly.

Okay but can we talk for a moment about the layers of complexity regarding race that are unfolding in this scene right here?

You have:

  1. Two black women discussing very real issues of privilege and passing regarding dark and light skin tones in society.
  2. In which topics of identity and feelings of belonging and kinship are discussed and dissected explicitly, because one is the bi-racial child of the other, at one point actually pointing out how she didn’t feel like she belonged to either group.
  3. Which is further complicated by the fact that Lena is a lesbian, so her comments about belonging (or rather not belonging) to the minority or majority take on another layer of unspoken but very present and implied exclusion/inclusion.
  4. All of which is sparked from Lena’s mom calling Lena out on the fact that throwing a kickass Quinceanera (without really fully understanding the ins and outs and nuances of the culture) is not the same as making sure Mariana is part of her Latina culture, and actually in fact very finely skirts the line of cultural appropriation if it’s all about you projecting your feelings of cultural isolation.

This is what happens when you make women, women of color, and lesbians the main characters of your show. We can have conversations like this on TV, and regardless on whose side of the discussion you fall on, the fact that we’re even SEEING this conversation is, in itself, revolutionary. It has been a long time since I have seen a scene like this tackle the topics of race so head on, and on a family show at that.

Major props to everyone involved in bringing this scene to life, because the writing and the acting make it so neither woman is fully in the wrong, and I am so happy to see this bring brought up, because scene like this spark dialogue about topics that are rarely addressed so openly in our own lives.

What show is this??? I’m late

Did anyone ever watch Class of 3000? It’s a show that was produced by and starred Andre 3000, about a class of musically gifted kids at a performing arts school. This show was definitely different than a lot of other cartoons, but the element that really set it apart from others was its full musical sequences of original jazz, blues, and funk songs that feel rich and unique in this pop and hip-hop saturated culture. This show emphasized characters and character relationships, which the music highlighted.

Unfortunately, the show only lasted two seasons after someone sued Andre 3000, saying that 3000 stole his idea for this show. Cartoon Network has since pretty much erased all trace of this show from the actual network and its website. Truly underrated cartoon taken before its time.

I literally do not care at all about the Academy Awards this year. The moment they gave “best actress” to Jennifer Lawrence instead of this amazing little baby actress, the Oscars lost whatever meaning they still held onto IMO.

I’m not just saying she should have won because she was five years old when she gave this amazing performance. I’m saying it because she really gave the best performance of the year, regardless of age!

No one will ever be able to convince me that J.L.’s performance in Silver Linings even came close to Quevanzhané Wallis in Southern Wild.

So anyway, this isn’t the first time the Academy has messed up, but it was definitely the last time I’d ever pay attention to them.

I was literally just discussing this with my mom earlier today. But really why does anyone care what the Academy thinks anymore anyway? They are all old irrelevant white dudes.

I suppose I was naive about the Oscars when I saw this movie and heard, a few days later, that Quevanzhané Wallis got nominated for best actress. I had never fully paid attention to the Oscars, but I definitely recognized the name as like “OH WOW, THE OSCARS!!!!

When they announced the result, I was like “NOOO THE OSCARS HAVE FAILED!!!!!!” only to realize, with more understanding of what the award is and how it works, that the Oscar is and always has been full of fail:

[T]he academy, currently made up of 5,765 voting members, is more monolithic than even skeptics might assume: The median age is 62, and only 14% of its membership is under the age of 50. Less than 4% of the academy is black or Latino. - See more at:  http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2012/02/oscars-2012-academy-awards-madonna-woody-allen.html

This is why the Oscars are so out of touch!!!^^
