Oh, anon, your feelings are valid, but you also should be asking yourself: What kind of internalized racism is involved in whitesplaning for Bioware? Because no, we don’t get representation. But no, we should not be passive about it. Not if we want representation, not if we want to be able to put ourselves and see people who look like ourselves in a game.
Not when Thedas can be full of elves and dwarves and Qunari and maybe even races we haven’t even heard of yet, but not have representation for us.
Not when it takes Ballades TWO HOURS playing with sliders that are supposed to make customization as versatile as possible to make a character who looks faintly Asian, but still not really.
Not when any game that even has a shitty CC but which lets me make Asian characters gets automatically makes me slightly more excited.
And, anon, your comment about games from Asia was completely insensitive and frankly, ignorant. There is so much of a cultural difference between games from Asia made for Asian people IN ASIA and the culture that we Asian American grow up in, this dual culture where we don’t really fit in either. Think of it this way: there’s a reason we’re playing games by an American company and not exclusively Asian games.
Honestly, anon, this post doesn’t make me angry. Mostly, it just makes me sad. Because you know what? About five years ago, I might have agreed with you. Hell, even two years ago, I might have agreed with you.
But we deserve representation. As consumers, we deserve the same respect that white consumers do: the ability to represent ourselves in a game that should be immerse, that should be letting us do that.
And we should have a right to be angry when we don’t get the chance to do that.
