4 Cops Beat Pregnant Woman, Stomping on Her Stomach During False Arrest, Causing Miscarriage

The woman initially informed the cops that she was pregnant, the officers allegedly struck her before throwing her to the ground and stomping on her stomach.

NYPD officers arrived at Emelda Fitzroy’s house at 1:45 p.m. Although the civil complaint does not mention why the police went to her home, Fitzroy asserts that she told the officers that she was pregnant before they “forcibly grabbed” her and arrested her “without any legal justification.”

After striking her in the stomach, officers reportedly threw Fitzroy to the ground before stomping on her. Arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges of assault, misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration, and lesser counts of harassment, Fitzroy was incarcerated for 26 hours and later miscarried her baby “as the result of the injuries she sustained” at the hands of the police.

All of the charges against Fitzroy were dropped according to the complaint. Her lawsuit alleges the NYPD committed deprivation of civil rights, use of excessive force, false arrest, unlawful search and seizure, and common-law assault and battery. Due to the fact that the lawsuit is still pending, the NYPD has refused to comment on the case.

This is not the first case in which the NYPD has been accused of assaulting an unarmed pregnant woman. A video was posted on Facebook depicting NYPD cops repeatedly throwing an obviously pregnant woman onto the street before viciously shoving another unarmed woman onto the ground.

The video shows the level of corruption that these racist gang members don’t even care they’re being recorded doing this.  Cops do not ever stop other cops from beating and killing people. Cops do not ever arrest or even disarm other cops for doing it. The number of times I have ever heard of it happening you can count on one hand, and in every case the intervening cop was made to suffer for it.

When Trump and others try to claim that nobody in the anti-abortion movement is in favor of punishing women for having abortions, just the doctors… they’re already trying to punish women for having miscarriages and stillbirths, so yeah, don’t buy it.

This is also not an isolated incident...it’s been going on for a while.

My mother had three pregnancies, and two children.  She had a miscarriage, between my brother and I, in that four year span between our births, there was another pregnancy, another child desperately wanted, who didn’t live to term.

My mother had her pre-natal care, and her post-miscarriage care, at Planned Parenthood.

Because it was the best place for her.  Because at the time, she had a two year old child and a bike and they were living just around that nice little sweet spot between ‘desperately poor’ and ‘almost have enough to consider a savings account.‘  And when you are poor, and female, and need health services, Planned Parenthood is there.

And my mother walked past the protesters, walked past the people who screamed at her about not killing her baby, about how she was a whore, and she was going to hell.  My mother, in mourning for a child that she had lost, blaming herself, hating herself for failing at this most feminine of things, walked through that, to care for herself, to get the medical care she needed.  So that someday, two years later, she could have me.

I cannot speak to the courage that must have taken.  But that path is walked by thousands of women.  Every single day.

She donated to Planned Parenthood until her death.  And she said to me, that the people who screamed at her saw her only as a vessel for a baby.  They didn’t care about her, they didn’t care about her baby, either.  They were pro-birth, not pro-life, because none of them would be there after her baby was born, to offer help and support and care.

The protesters didn’t care about her.  And the medical professionals inside did.  It is the right of every woman to have access to safe, affordable, quality health care, no matter where she comes from, what her income is, or what choices she makes with her life.  And that is what these kind of bills are attempting to take away.

The latest smear campaign that falsely portrays Planned Parenthood’s participation in tissue donation programs supporting lifesaving scientific research is not only an attack on Planned Parenthood, it is also an attack on women who, like me, have voluntarily decided to try to save lives through tissue donation after an abortion.

I was 10 years into a very successful career, my marriage was six years strong, and I was pregnant for the first time.  I was at the top of my game — until, at one of my routine checkups, my ob-gyn couldn’t hear our son’s heartbeat. She explained my baby had died and that she was going to schedule a D&C because my body had not naturally eliminated the pregnancy.

In that moment of total crisis for my husband and me, my doctor also asked us a question that helped transform this devastating loss into one with meaning:  She asked if we wanted to donate the tissue to an important research project on trisomy 21, a genetic disorder they discovered he had.

All these years later, the loss of our son still brings me more pain than I could have ever imagined.  But knowing that we had an option that could lead to scientific discoveries to prevent other couples’ suffering down the line was a gift back to us.  Some people may say that my experience was different because my procedure was done to complete a miscarriage.  But medically speaking, it was an abortion — in fact, “abortion” is the procedure listed on my discharge form from the hospital.

In many areas of medicine, patients can decide to have tissue donated to help lead to medical breakthroughs. Why should women who have abortions at Planned Parenthood be treated differently?

shout out to Palestinian mothers who lost their babies to a mass genocide, to black mothers who lost their babies to racist white cops/people, to the Mexican mothers whose babies were killed by their own government, to the Syrian mothers whose babies were killed by an unjustified “war”, mothers whose children were murdered in school massacres, mothers who miscarried, mothers who had still borns. Basically any mom whose motherhood was stripped from her. You were/would have been an amazing mom.
