DVA,Genji and Hanzo vs ? ? ?

like you might mean well but this drawing is pretty racist. you’re reimagining overwatch characters as samurai champloo characters who are all japanese, and while Hanzo and Genji are both japanese, Dva is korean.

And in depicting Dva as this japanese character you’re essentially reinforcing the stereotype of how all east/south-east asians are the same and a monolithic entity which is very harmful and not okay.

edit: especially because Japan has a history of imperialism within east and south-east asia and has forced many people of the countries (which includes korea) under it’s thumb at that time to assimilate and discard their own heritage, culture, language, and roots

^^^^ You’re a fucking idiot. It is LITERALLY JUST FANART DRAWN BASED OFF OF POSES FROM AN ANIME. They didn’t even use the exact same style, and they are just having fun drawing art! They probably didn’t even pay attention to the character’s nationalities and race all too much when drawing this. It’s fucking fan art, calm the fuck down. Now, OP, your art is great! Just ignore the “this art is racist” bullshit! Just keep doing what you’re doing! It’s great!

lol maybe you should shut the fuck up considering it’s not just the same poses the overwatch characters are drawn wearing literally the same outfits as the samurai champloo characters except for the color scheme and you can have fun drawing art and still you pay attention to details that are important in order to not do something that perpetuates racist notions that are directly affecting REAL, LIVING people TODAY

also interesting that u say they weren’t paying attention to nationalities and races considering samurai champloo is really distinctly and obviously set in japan and 2/3 of the overwatch characters they chose to portray as samurai champloo characters are japanese and the third one is conveniently one of the only two east asian women in overwatch

One, I don’t think the OP even knows the characters names, considering they didn’t tag their names and put question marks instead of their names. Two, they mostly used the same outfits because they were using the Samurai Champloo pic as a fucking base and didn’t want to draw all new outfits. Also, you are a COMPLETE fucking idiot if you think this art affects anyone negatively at all. Well, it affects over sensitive pussies like yourself who get so worked up over a FUCKING DRAWING ON THE INTERNET. It literally harms NO ONE. Seriously, only assholes like you that actively try to find bullshit reasons to get offended are looking this and thinking “OH THIS IS ABOUT ASIAN PEOPLE STEREOTYPES AND RACISM uwu.” Most people look at this and think, “Oh, someone made cute art of completely fictional characters. It is cute and I like it. Reblog and like!” That is literally it! Only people who are trying to find things to be offended by will look at this and think about stereotypes and racism and such. YOU are the one making this about race and stuff. YOU are the one trying to make a completely innocent drawing a controversial thing with your bullshit. For all you know, the artist could be asian! Shut your god damn mouth and stop trying to police art. OP, I’m sorry for this drama garbage. Your art is wonderful!

Like… you can argue that it’s “just a parody” or that “they didn’t pay attention to the nationalities” or whatever but in the end it’s still a really shitty thing to do.

They drew D.Va with what looks like kanzashi in her hair + if it’s a straight pose rip, a kimono?

In order to understand why this is kind of fucked up, you need to understand that Korea and Japan don’t particularly have a great relationship historically. D.Va is Korean. And given the Japanese occupation of Korea where Korean people were forcibly stripped of their culture - it’s insensitive at the VERY least and yes PRETTY RACIST. Korean women (as well as Chinese women) were forced into sexual slavery for the Japanese military and labeled as “comfort women”??? People were violently forced to assimilate and given Japanese names and beaten unless they spoke Japanese. My grandparents lived through the occupation and can still read and speak Japanese to this date because they were forced to learn w/ the threat of violence and death. It’s fucking offensive to Koreans. It’s not just some made up “bullshit”

Even beyond the historical insensitivity this piece exhibits, mainstream western culture so often conflates East Asian countries together. I’ve personally been taunted with “ching chong” and had people wildly guess my ethnicity. This sort of behavior isn’t just limited to playground taunts either. Take Vincent Chin, for example. A Chinese man who was murdered because he was mistaken as Japanese? Perpetuating the Asian monolith myth is not only disrespectful. It’s dangerous. So no, it’s not just “fanart”. Sorry your opinions literally don’t fucking matter in this case because HISTORICALLY shit like this has harmed East Asians.

Also, OP didn’t even draw this art. They stole it from the original artist so, lmao. @scarletgoldenthorn you’re not even ~defending~ the right person. I hope it was worth it spending a part of ur day defending an art reposter.

<apparently the only thing you can be upset about is if the art was stolen and reposted LMAO otherwise, ”you’re segregating cultures!!!”>

Racism is over thanks to @scarletgoldenthorn everybody just learn to stop being a total whiny bitch and love Japanese imperialism, what might they rant about next- how ‘comfort women’ were ‘handsomely paid for their services and not raped and abused at all’? I’m dying to find out.

@scarletgoldenthorn you wanna shut the fuck up lmao. sit the fuck down and stop defending art that isnt even yours you extra bitch

There is literally no issue with this drawing. <more racism>

this isnt a discussion this, its korean people telling you to know your place you cunt

korean history isnt a discussion will you drop that. who’s “they” huh? oh right, koreans! when a korean, such as me, tells you to shut up just stop. why are you so obbsessed with koreans being able to wear kimonos, unless you’re korean or japanese your opinion means literally nothing so sit! the! fuck! down!

<white tears>

It’s literally not about what Korean people /can/ wear though? We’re literally saying that lumping D.Va in an Overwatch x Samurai Champloo crossover piece done in this manner is racist because of the historical implications there that parallel both imperialist Japanese and western stereotypes about Korean people??

And just because your ancestors had a ~history of oppression~ that you’re fine with ignoring, that doesn’t mean that you get to talk over multiple people who are pointing out why this is a problem. There are now five different people telling you that there is a context that you have no authority to be speaking over us on. Maybe instead of getting defensive and calling all of us hyper-sensitive pussies and de-railing the central point of what was being said, you should hear us out and analyze what’s being said with an introspective outlook.

Not to mention, this isn’t a thing that happened centuries ago and remains in the past. These tensions still exist. My grandmother still has trouble responding to her Korean name. My aunt, who currently lives in America, speaks more English and Japanese than Korean. My mother got verbally shit on by her family and her husband for learning Japanese from the Japanese embassy - in the 1970s. My sister was almost disowned for taking Japanese as her language in high school (early 2000s). I almost got disowned for taking Japanese as part of my college major (literally a few months ago). Japan’s prime ministers flip flop between conciliatory olive branch relations with Korea and claiming that comfort women were “wartime necessities” rather than the war crimes they were. You might think that some of these are absurd and yes I admit that my father especially is a conservative Korean man but the point is, these tensions are still very largely unresolved.

This one piece of art might not have an earth-shattering impact on the perception of Korean people but it’s one more piece that aggressive racists can use as fodder. It’s one more show of ignorance, and whether it’s benign or malignant I’m sure OP can clarify that.

At this point this “discussion” isn’t even about OP anymore, it’s about people like you who insist that the multiple people disagreeing with you are the pussies and insist that your voice be the One Voice that everyone listens to when it’s very obvious you have no ground to stand on with regard to the context.

<all east asians look the same apparently>

You do realize that’s irrelevant to what we were saying? What does it matter where Mugen is from? Is D.Va (Korean) supposed to be a stand-in for him (Ainu)? No, you literally said yourself that D.Va has been superimposed on Fuu.

And again, you’re de-railing and ignoring us. As far as I know, this whole thing started with you taking it upon yourself to be aggressively ignorant after someone pointed out a potentially problematic point in their art. This conversation has moved beyond OP and their (potentially reposted) art and to you and your refusal to pipe down and listen to us. This is going beyond the art and into what /you/ are saying and doing that is ignorant.

You were the one who lashed out first by calling the first commenter a “fucking idiot” and maybe it’s time for you to ask yourself why you reacted so rabidly to someone pointing out a set of stereotypes the art seems to perpetuate instead of telling all of us that we’re reacting over nothing.

<informing about japanese imperialism is “racial propaganda” apparently>

<friend of scarlet’s with nothing of interest to add>

@lazy-afternooner lmao geez.. just wondering if you’re seeing this too & if you wanna say what’s up on your side. I read you tried to do some retroactive damage control in the tags but I guess some people have decided to assume you’re being bullied and have gone into full troll mode. If you need some hanbok refs or drawing tips, I’ll find you some. No big deal & I’m sure a lot of Koreans would like to see that artwork.

guys look at this non-korean tryna tell koreans whats racist and what isnt

this is hilarious

korean people: *gives free education on the cultural history between japan and korea and its correlation to this art’s implication—art being one of the things that are defining points at any given point in history*

this non-korean shitstain: I’M NOT RACIST, YOU’RE RACIST BY TELLING ME IT’S RACIST!! STAHP BEING UPSET, KOREANS!! IT’S RACIAL PROPAGANDA!! IT’S JUST PIXELS!! ART MEANS NOTHING!!

you can’t even go one paragraph without insulting people who are rightfully upset and who clearly know more about their own culture and history than you do.

anyway, here are other racists to exercise your block list who agreed with this ignorant edgelord (with receipts; unlinked means it’s a reply i can’t link):  fancypantaloones, pokecrettes, augur-of-dunlain, blind-venerer, f77k, mooncplise-dump,  tatarthekaiju, doppel-dude, and kurtcurtis.

Have you guys seen this flag before? I feel like a lot of people assume that this is a cool way to draw the Japanese flag or something, but it isn’t.

This flag is called the Rising Sun flag. And it seems to me that people aren’t too aware of the history behind this flag and why it should not be used.

This flag was used by the imperial Japanese army. When Korea was under Japanese rule in the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s, my people were treated like animals. My great grandmother was a lucky few that wasn’t robbed of her culture and language in her generation. My great grandmother’s brother was a teacher, and Japanese men took him and rolled him in a hay carpet and beat him up. He was always sick and wobbled when he walked until the day he passed away.

These are the less scarier stories, because my mother’s family was one of the richer families. Women were kidnapped and taken as sex-slaves for the army. They were raped and were tortured. Children were beat to death by Japanese teachers. My people were used in all sorts of experiments to fulfill curiosity. I’m not gonna speak more about the terrible things because they were horrendous and inhumane. You can do some researches on your own.

I’m not much of an expert, but the Chinese also went through the similar things as we did.

But that flag was hung all around Korea during that time. This flag is a constant reminder of what my families had to go through.

This flag is no better than the Swastika. This flag will forever be tied to the horror that my people had to go through.

It is so disgusting to see people justify this flag because it “was originally a symbol for good prosperity”. Swastika was “originally a symbol of well-being”.

Does that give me the right to wear the flag around in every merchandise? and when a Jewish person comes up and tells me that it is offends them and explains the history, can I just say “It originally wasn’t the Nazi sign. It’s only cultural appreciation.”?

Absolutely not.

But when I looked up the Rising Sun Flag, it says that the use of the flag is controversial because Koreans and Taiwanese take offense to the flag, and it pretty much says that people were told not to bring it to Olympics for the sake of the butt-hurt Koreans and Chinese people. As if we weren’t supposed to take offense to this flag.

Although I’m not an expert of everything related to this, I’ll do my best to answer if you have any questions.

Also, no, I don’t have any ill feelings toward Japan. (some of my family members do, because their parents and siblings were killed and/or was tortured) Although I do want the government to acknowledge and apologize the fact that they did in fact torture my people, and teach what happened to their students. I am not angry at the Japanese citizens.

The reason why I’m making this post is because this white anime-lover boy came to school with a shirt with this flag during our school’s color wars by grade, and he has been wearing the shirt every year. Even after a lot of our Korean students asked nicely him to not wear the shirt again. Every. Year. He manages to complain about the “so much shit I got” from wearing the flag. I asked him later and he word for word said “Yeah, the Japanese raped the shit out of your women” he knew the history just as much as we did. He justified it with cultural appreciation. I know that some people may own merchandise with this flag on without knowing what it means, or even sell it without knowing. But please, it really hurts us when we see this flag justified, worn and drawn all around by all sorts of people.

So please, educate yourself, and others. Spread the word.

Dear DreamWorks Studios,
As moviegoers and fans of the original 1995 Ghost in the Shell film, we respectfully request that you cast an actress of Japanese descent for the lead role of Motoko Kusanagi rather than Scarlett Johansson.
The American film industry is already unfriendly to Asian actors without roles in major films being changed to exclude them. One recent survey found that in 2013, Asian characters made up only 4.4% of speaking roles in top-grossing Hollywood films.
Please use this opportunity to help talented Asian-American actors receive recognition for their work. There are so few opportunities for them to shine in Hollywood, and this film would be a perfect platform.

Valentine’s Day, 2015

Don’t trust the Hetalians we love romanticizing imperialism and war with our stereotypes and crappy humor

Holy Christ, okay sit down I’m going to explain something to you.

Hetalia isn’t simply “stereotypes and crappy humor”. Hetalia was created by a man who is literally a right-wing nationalist who FULLY believes Asian countries under Japanese Imperialism BENEFITTED from colonialism. I want to give you a rundown of what life was like under the Japanese occupation, because my grandparents suffered under it.

Many non-Japanese East and Southeast Asians, under Japanese occupation, were often forced to speak Japanese only and often their native languages were forbidden. They were forced to forsake their own names and take on Japanese ones. Women were often kidnapped and taken as sex slaves (called “comfort women”), many people were taken as slaves and sent to Japan. A lot of their descendants still face discrimination in Japan today and are known as Zainichi. You were literally in danger of being beaten to death or enslaved at any moment for one wrong move. Japan was responsible for a FUCKTON of genocides, including the Rape of Nanjing and the Bataan Death march. (Media that shows what life was like under the Japanese occupation include the films “Ip Man” and “Nanjing! Nanjing!” and the book “When My Name Was Keoko.”)

If you’re a Westerner you probably know very little about this and won’t pick up on hints (although to the rest of us Asians it’s incredibly blatant) of nationalism and pro-imperialist propaganda in Hetalia. I’ve explained these things in a previous post but I’m going to just copypasta it here.

“South Korea is portrayed as someone who “hates” Japan but it shown as somewhat a closet weeb. I’ll copy something from the bio.

Korea claims to hate Japan, but is constantly copying his style and creations, and believes that he has ownership over his breasts. At one point, he wanted to dig a tunnel to connect both their countries. He tried to justify his complicated relationship with the claim that tsundere originated from him.
In the original World Conference strip, it is shown that he will go out of his way to disagree with any of Japan’s opinions, preferring to side with America instead - even when Japan and America have already agreed.

The first sentence is incredibly reflective of many Japanese people’s belief that Korea wanted to be colonized by Japan and that the colonialism benefited them. Furthermore, “believes that he has ownership over his breasts”? Japan and Korea (as far as I know) are often in disagreement over who owns which land. To put it mildly. And Japan absolutely thinks these lands belong to them. I’m not going to answer further questions about Korea since I’m not Korean and you’re better off discussing this with Korean users such as lostintrafficlights

I am, however, Taiwanese, so yeah, I can be a little more elaborate on Taiwan’s portrayal. (More excerpts from the Hetalia wiki bios.)

Most of the time she is very positive and cheerful, and enjoys Japan’s “kawaii” culture very much.

Again, other Asian countries TOTALLY IN LOVE WITH JAPAN!! AND ITS CULTURE!!! (And this isn’t to say there aren’t some Asians who are very interested in Japanese culture, but given the context of Hetalia? It’s pretty clear what they’re trying to depict.)

She addresses [China] as “teacher” in the drama CD, but calls him a “bastard” in an earlier sketch. An early illustration showed that she cannot stand China, and prefers Japan, ordering China to leave him alone.

This description alone is so fucking disgusting I can’t even.

Does Taiwan have conflict with China? Yeah. China still thinks we’re a Chinese colony when we are an independent country. (So then why are we called “ROC” on U.S. passports? U.S. is heavily reliant on China and god forbid they give a shit about Chinese politicians fucking over Taiwanese people.)

But the Hetalia mangaka completely warps this into “OH TAIWAN IS ON JAPAN’S SIDE BECAUSE WE BOTH HATE CHINA!!!” Just because our current conflicts are with China does not mean we don’t abhor Japan’s occupation. People were enslaved and massacred. We won’t forget this simply in a span of seventy years. My grandparents alive during that time, that’s how recent it was. For the mangaka to completely twist Taiwan’s issues into “OH HOW WE LOVE JAPAN!!! OHHHH JAPAN IS CLEARLY THE SUPERIOR ONE!!!” reeks of nationalism and right-wing beliefs.”

This is also why the Rising Sun flag is incredibly insulting in most of East/Southeast Asia, akin to waving the Nazi flag in Jewish communities. Hetalia is literal modern-day propaganda. There are survivors who have never recovered from their trauma, old women who were sex slaves in those days who never received compensation. Oh, and funny thing about that–Japanese schools refuse to teach the horrors of their occupation. They refuse to take down the rising sun flag, and most importantly, Japan has never apologized for its war crimes and the devastation they’ve brought to millions of innocent people. Please take this into account when you see people angry at your fandom for simply dismissing it as silly stereotypes.

If you really can’t see why Hetalia is so horrible and imperialist and insulting after all this, I just have no words at your selfishness.

70 years ago today, 29-year-old Tsutomu Yamaguchi was visiting Hiroshima on business and had been walking to his office. In a 2010 interview with ABC News Australia, Yamaguchi spoke of the horror he felt that day. He described that it appeared as if the “sun had fallen.“ Yamaguchi was lucky, though he suffered severe burns, he was able to escape the city. But fate would strike twice.

The U.S. Education system really needs to correct the way Hiroshima and Nagasaki are taught in classes.

This is really cool.

An onna-bugeisha (女武芸者) was a type of female warrior belonging to the Japanese upper class. Many wives, widows, daughters, and rebels answered the call of duty by engaging in battle, commonly alongside samurai men. They were members of the bushi (samurai) class in feudal Japan and were trained in the use of weapons to protect their household, family, and honour in times of war. They also represented a divergence from the traditional ‘housewife’ role of the Japanese woman. They are sometimes referred to as female samurai. Significant icons such as Empress Jingu, Tomoe Gozen, Nakano Takeko, and Hōjō Masako are famous examples of onna bugeisha. (x)
