About Those Red Equal Signs That Are All Over The Place

So in case you didn’t know, those red equal signs everyone’s posting on Facebook are a modified version of the Human Rights Campaign’s logo. Keep in mind: A) Yesterday HRC had a trans flag removed from the demonstration outside the courthouse, in keeping with their longstanding policy of always being afraid someone will find out what the T in LGBT stands for. B) Today HRC asked a speaker from United We Dream’s Queer Undocumented Immigrant Project to not mention that he was undocumented — because heaven forfend anyone realize that immigration rights issues touch our community too! (English captions for the video available here courtesy of Sprinkles McGillicuddy) C) When this got started, HRC actually publicly opposed filing lawsuits against Prop 8 specifically because they didn’t want the issue to go before the Supreme Court — but now that it’s there and signs are promising, they’re quite eager to take the credit, of course.

Listen, if marriage is really your thing and you want to say so in a public way, go for it! Personally, I think marriage is overrated as an issue, but we can agree to disagree and discuss it further from there.

But please: inform yourself about who you’re supporting before you decide on how to do so. HRC actually has a long, awful history with practically everyone except their wealthy donors; they’re just good at marketing themselves. Don’t be fooled.

While the head honchos at the HRC are making 6 figure salaries from donations to support ‘marriage equality’, hundreds of thousands of LGBTQ youth are homeless and are purposely ignored by mainstream gay organizations. The ‘fight’ for same sex marriage has proven to be a profitable business for gay ‘non-profit’ businesses, so it’s no wonder why gay marriage overshadows all other LGBTQ issues. After all, helping the needy results in smaller pay.

Supporting gay marriage doesn’t mean you support the queer struggle. In fact, most ‘allies’ and even a large portion of more fortunate queers don’t know the facts about LGBTQ homelessness, violence against trans* people, high unemployment, discrimination, etc, nor do they bother to research it. They are just concerned about their favorite gay celebrities being able to tie the knot.

If you care about the queer struggle, take a minute of your day to familiarize yourself with some of the disturbing statistics:

  • 20- 40% of homeless youth are LGBTQ. In comparison, the general youth population is only 3-10% LGBTQ.
  • LGBTQ youth are twice as likely to experience sexual abuse before the age of 12.
  • LGBTQ youth, once homeless, are at higher risk for victimization, mental health problems, and unsafe sexual practices. 58.7% of LGBTQ homeless youth have been sexually victimized compared to 33.4% of heterosexual homeless youth
  • LGBTQ youth are roughly 7.4 times more likely to experience acts of sexual violence than heterosexual homeless youth
  • LGBTQ homeless youth commit suicide at higher rates (62%) than heterosexual homeless youth (29%)
  • At least 20% of ALL transgender people will be homeless sometime in their life.
  • 29% of transgender people reported being turned away from a homeless shelter due to their transgender status.

Please consider taking action to help combat LGBTQ homelessness. I suggest making a donation to the Ali Forney Center or volunteering at your local LGBTQ homeless shelter.

God help us.

They can’t win. They cannot win. Everything we’ve worked for, I’ve worked for, nearly my entire life will be dismissed, invalidated, made illegal or otherwise destroyed—families, marriages, relationships, employment. Romney and Ryan are for the dehumanization of women, the poor, and gays. Romney and Ryan are for hate crimes removing the “problem” of gays. Romney and Ryan are for arresting people who simply disagree with them.

They want a police state with the rich utterly supported and the poor crushed under their heels. They want to throw the country back to where problems were solved by execution, not discussion.

They cannot win. We’re doomed if they do.

So frightening what the future looks like for all of us, if these two giant bags of dicks get elected. I am going to cry.
