Nothing screams ‘I like racist, anti-semitic, transphobic, pedophilic content’ like ‘LET PEOPLE ENJOY THINGS OH MY GOD’ like. Hm. I wonder if your interests weren’t directly harming people of color, Jewish people, trans people and children, you wouldn’t feel this desperate need to defend yourself. I said once that shame and guilt are under-utilized in our society … I think we should bring it back. If you do shitty bad things and have shitty bad interests that harm others and marginalized groups, you should be guilty and should be shamed. Just a thought!

Isn’t that kind of a slippery slope? You can enjoy content while still acknowledging and condemning the problematic parts of it.

Obviously trying to justify those problematic parts are what’s deserving of guilt and shamed.

nobody said you couldn’t … what i did say is that if you feel the desperate need to go ‘oh my god let me ENJOY things oh my god’ about media that is harmful (attack on titan, beastars, hamilton, b99, etc.) then maybe your first reaction shouldn’t be to jump to defend yourself and question what you gain out of watching/supporting media that harms people of color, jewish people, trans people, extra the cetera, you know?

@ cis allies: literally never harass terfs on here. Not only is it just self serving showboating but like also the results of it are something you are insulated from. It’s trans women who end up actually having to deal with the fallout of it.

If you see trans women receiving harassment from terfs then offer your support, encouragement, and affirmation to those trans women. If you are asked to intervene in a specific interaction then do. Other than that really don’t do much else because usually it just brings more harassment our way.

Katie’s response after the whole thing went down:

“To be fair, usually, I’ve done a lot of shows where there is a very obvious undertone in between two female characters. And for once I was like… It’s not here.

And I was wrong apparently!

But, we were talking about this the other day, about it, and, and the great thing about what we do is like any art is, anybody can read into it what they want to take from it. So you can see anything and take from it what you like, and that’s what’s great about this show, is that there are so many different ways to see everything.

And if that’s what you see in it? You know, take it away! It’s art.”

Like Mark Hamill before her, this is how you ally. Just because you may not have seen the character as gay, or having attractions to a certain character, etc etc etc, doesn’t invalidate what another person might see, and what does it hurt for them to see it that way? If it helps them, or gives them hope, or makes them feel brave, why would you take that away from them? She recognizes that what they’re putting out is art, and art has ALWAYS been subjective, so she doesn’t make fun of people for seeing what they see.

The young man who survived having his throat cut in the MAX attack that left two other men dead, says he appreciates all the support aimed at him but people are focusing on the wrong victims.

Micah  Fletcher urged people to donate money to a fundraising campaign for the girls.

What it means to be a true hero.

A beautiful soul. A true Hero.

The idea that racism will die out with the white baby boomers is a myth perpetuated by white millennials who do not want to take action and responsibility for calling out racism in their own generation. White millennials are not inherently less racist than white baby boomers and racism does not disappear with a generation. Racism is a construct that exists in all aspects of society, from politics to economics to social norms and activities. It can only be eradicated with constant and fervent dismantling of these powerful constructs in place and new generations must keep working at it. I’ve heard too many fellow white people say that when all these ‘racist old people’ die off then we’ll be fine but we all know that racism is not limited to old white people and that the alt-right is littered with white millennials. Check your friends and family on bigoted and racist remarks. Be a good ally. Sitting back for old people to die is not good allyship and you’ll soon see that they are not the only racists in power.

In short: Racism will not die on it’s own… we have to actively kill it.

Something I wish more people would understand…

What’s her name?

Her name is Jane Elliott. She was a former schoolteacher, now she’s anti-racism activist, feminist and LGBT activist. She’s tiny, mean, and boss as fuck.

She’s known for her “blue eyes-brown eyes experiment” where she divides a group of volunteers from the blues and the browns. The minute the people walk in, the blue-eyes know they’re not welcomed. She makes them wait in a separate room, gives them shitty chairs, bad food, and shows them less respect. And (obviously) it causes all sorts of discomfort and rage, but that’s precisely her point. It doesn’t help that most blue-eyed volunteers happen to be white as well. Sometimes they get the message, sometimes they don’t and leave, sometimes crying or screaming. And Jane Elliott says that’s exactly what minorities want to do everyday of their lives, but they simply cannot do.

Did I mention she’s boss as fuck?

Angela Peoples did not come to the Women’s March on Washington to play. The 30-year-old co-director of the LGBTQ equality organization GetEqual came to Saturday’s massive protest against Donald Trump to tell the truth. Marching in a sea of white women, Peoples wore a hat that read, “Stop Killing Black People,” and carried a sign that read in part, “White Women Voted for Trump.”

As a group of white women in pink pussy-hats took selfies behind Peoples and her sign, her boyfriend, photographer and digital strategist Kevin Banatte, asked her to pause so he could take her picture. The photo of the oblivious women and Peoples, sucking on a lollipop, holding her sign with an unapologetic look on her face, quickly went viral.

TR: Why did you decide to create the sign “White Women Voted for Trump”?

AP: We need to be really honest about why we’re here. There was a sense for me of being at the march and in community with folks that were wanting to resist this horrifying reality, but also not wanting folks to get complacent.

TR: How did people respond to you and your sign?

AP: Most were saying, “Not this white woman,” or “No one I know!” I’d say, “[Fifty-three percent] of white women voted for Trump. That means someone you know, someone who is in close community with you, voted for Trump. You need to organize your people.” And some people said, “Oh, I’m so ashamed.” Don’t be ashamed; organize your people.

That’s why the photo was such a great moment to capture, because it tells the story of white women in this moment wanting to just show up in a very superficial way and not wanting to do the hard work of making change, of challenging their own privilege. You’re here protesting, but don’t forget: The folks that you live with every single day - and probably some of the women that decided to come to the march - voted for Trump, made the decision to vote against self-interests to maintain their white supremacist way of life.”
