Are you actually from an Arabic speaking country or is that Arabic script purely for aesthetics? If you are of Arabic descent, but live in America or Europe, please don't use it. It's appropriating a culture you don't belong in.

LOL I’m Palestinian I’ve said this like ten thousand times.

And it’s “Arab descent” not “Arabic descent” buddy.

And it IS my culture - just because my family was forced out of their ancestral home because of Israeli aggression doesn’t make it any less my culture.

Go fuck yourself.

Things brown/south asian tumblr will probably never address:

Antiblackness that actually involves the input of black south asians & black people in general

Ignoring the fact that South Asia is comprised of 8 countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, India, Maldives, and Sri Lanka.

Lack or complete ignorance of north east indian culture and peoples.

Cultural hegemony India tends to have over representing South Asia

Discussion of caste which doesn’t reduce it down to an old practice that doesn’t actively shape an individual’s life in a variety of ways that are not exclusive to socioeconomic struggles.

How the discussion of the South Asian diaspora focuses mainly on those living in the West.

Hindutva

Steve McCurry making a name for himself off of the exploitation and exotification of South Asian faces and bodies (see: Sharbat Gula: known globally merely as “The Afghan Girl”

Ignorance of the issues Adivasi peoples face across South Asia.

Exploitation of the bodies of South Asian women for surrogacy by Westerners.

Savarna appropriation of Avarna arts redeeming it anew with culture now that it’s been mutilated by forward castes. (ie: Appropriation of Sadir into modern day Bharatnatyam)

The creation of good and bad brown/south asian dichotomy in the West Post 9/11 (ie: Indian peoples are characterized/seen as intelligent spiritual peaceful people while Pakistani and Afghani peoples are characterized/seen as violent terrorists or oppressed women who are labeled under islamophobic terms such as “radical muslim”

The lack of discussion about the South Asian diaspora in the Caribbean and South America.

Discrimination against Black African students living in South Asia.

Portrayal of Hinduism & Buddhism as peaceful religions while Islam is portrayed as violent and backwards.

Complete ignorance or writing off of Southern & Northeast Indian cultures by North Indians and Northern South Asians alike as not being authentically Indian or only discussing it when talking about the different regions of India.

Shadeism

How Bollywood has stolen, appropriated, and made racist caricatures of Indians and Non-Indians who are not Savarna North Indians. (See: Chennai Express, blackface meant to represent native Hawaiian peoples seen in the Hawa Hawai song in Mr. India, Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen, etc)

Misogyny and sexual violence against Dalit women.

Erasure of brown skin in South Asian media, replacing brown skinned South Asian women with extremely light skinned South Asian or white women calling them the ideal faces of South Asian womanhood and beauty.

Feel free to add to this

hey just a friendly reminder that an american game company has ZERO responsability on portraying or representing your race and no i'm not a white cis het male from the US telling you this. my latino brothers arent represented at all in videogames but i dont complain to people that dont have to do boo for me. once the gaming market in asia grows bigger then you can get all the asian games you want but play us/eu games and complain about diversity? pleeeease

Fuck off with this bullshit.  You deserve representation, and so do I.  Do you give these companies your money?  Do you want to see the place where you live reflected accurately in your media?  Do you want to see yourself better connected to narratives that should be universal?  Not just in video games, but television, movies, and books?  Then you bitch to the people creating those things.

You have no idea what the hell you’re talking about when it comes to the gaming market in Asia, nor do you understand the dynamics that drive the market, the design, and the marketing.  ASIANS IN ASIA DO NOT HAVE THE SAME EXPERIENCES AS THE REST OF THE DIASPORA.

Your feelings are valid but you should keep that shit to yourself.  Don’t come whining to me because you’re upset I decided to open my mouth before you did.  Minorities exist, and we should be visible.  To render us continually invisible only perpetuates the idea that we don’t matter, which is what you’re buying into.

Here are some directions for fucking off.  Walk to your left.  Continue walking.

Oh, anon, your feelings are valid, but you also should be asking yourself: What kind of internalized racism is involved in whitesplaning for Bioware? Because no, we don’t get representation. But no, we should not be passive about it. Not if we want representation, not if we want to be able to put ourselves and see people who look like ourselves in a game.

Not when Thedas can be full of elves and dwarves and Qunari and maybe even races we haven’t even heard of yet, but not have representation for us.

Not when it takes Ballades TWO HOURS playing with sliders that are supposed to make customization as versatile as possible to make a character who looks faintly Asian, but still not really.

Not when any game that even has a shitty CC but which lets me make Asian characters gets automatically makes me slightly more excited.

And, anon, your comment about games from Asia was completely insensitive and frankly, ignorant. There is so much of a cultural difference between games from Asia made for Asian people IN ASIA and the culture that we Asian American grow up in, this dual culture where we don’t really fit in either. Think of it this way: there’s a reason we’re playing games by an American company and not exclusively Asian games.

Honestly, anon, this post doesn’t make me angry. Mostly, it just makes me sad. Because you know what? About five years ago, I might have agreed with you. Hell, even two years ago, I might have agreed with you.

But we deserve representation. As consumers, we deserve the same respect that white consumers do: the ability to represent ourselves in a game that should be immerse, that should be letting us do that.

And we should have a right to be angry when we don’t get the chance to do that.

Jeremy Tiang Peak white privilege: an American history professor criticises my play, which is set in 18th Century China, for not mentioning America. US (2016) [Source]

There are not enough plays about Chinese history. We need more. This one, as an example, tells you a lot about family life and the deplorable positions of women in China who are not concubines or royals. They have no rights at all in an era where, particularly in the United States and England, feminism was starting to thrive…
It was during this time, too, that America began to trade with China. Following the American Revolution, the U.S. made Samuel Shaw, a retired Continental Army officer, its first China Consul. He arrived in China in 1784, set up offices and began to participate in trade with China, mainly involving China’s vast tea production. Some more of this story should have been told in the play.

Just to be clear, the play was an adaptation of Cao Xueqin’s Dream of the Red Chamber / Hong Lou Meng / 红楼梦, one of the four great classic novels of China.

IT’S NOT ABOUT THE WEST.

But Tiang has a possible solution:

Today in PE, my Chinese friend told me that I'm "not a real Chinese person" because I can't speak Chinese, and when I told her that I'm still half Cantonese even though I don't speak it, she straight up told me, "I don't care". When I told my other Chinese friend, she told me, "Culturally you're not really Chinese, but you can still say that you have Chinese blood when talking about your ethnicity." I guess it's not really a big deal, but it still hurts when I think about it :c

Don’t listen to them, you are Chinese regardless of your ability to speak the language or not. It’s rather annoying to hear a fellow Chinese said that to you but that shouldn’t discourage you at all.

And that whole Chinese blood statement is just silly, like, you are Chinese. That’s it. And culturally you’re not Chinese? How do people come up with nonsense like this?

I’m sorry you had to deal with that, I’m just going to say it again… You’re Chinese although you don’t speak Cantonese/Mandarin/Hokkien/etc.

Pfffffft. These pieces of shit aren’t your friends. Here’s what you should do:

1) Tell them they’re not your friends because real friends don’t invalidate each other.

2) When Friend #1 says she’s sorry, say “I don’t care.”

3) Tell Friend #2 that culturally she’s not your friend but she can say that she knew you once.

OR if you’re not an asshole like me and would rather not be rude, send them a text saying “We’re not friends anymore. Sorry, but I prefer not to associate with garbage.“ (Oh wait, shit. That’s rude too. Maybe ask another mod for how to do this in a “not rude” way because I clearly don’t know how to not be rude to willfully ignorant shitstains who think they can get away with invalidating my heritage.)

…Oh no wait I came up with something. If they’re the types that are sympathetic or like “nice,” the next time they say that, just straight up cry. It’ll catch them off guard and make them feel bad.

If you want, message me off anon and I’ll be your friend. You deserve friends that respect you and actually care if you’re hurt.

(1) @mod diva, regarding the issue concerning chinese identity as submitted by anon; Different cultures have different definitions of identity--Chinese can refer to both ethnic identity and legal identity.

(2) However, as China is a fairly homogenous country, the the legal identity of a Chinese and the ethnic identity can be closely associated. As well, language plays an essential role to accessing the customs and values of a culture.

(3) In lacking the ability to communicate using Chinese languages/dialects, though of part Cantonese descent, one may not be identified as “culturally Chinese” by other Chinese people.

(4) Therefore, it is important to respect the concept of Chinese identity by Chinese people, and not dismiss their concept of identity as being “silly”. As different cultures define identity differently, I kindly suggest that you refrain

(5) from inserting yourself into a conversation that is culturally subjective.

I get that and I am well aware of different identity views from different countries but the anon was feeling sad about their doubt on their own identity generally which is caused by other Chinese people telling them they’re not “Chinese” enough.

I am not seeing it from a specific country perspective but more like, um… cultural/heritage acceptance?A lot of Chinese people in different countries struggle with their identity because a lot of them are actually Chinese but are unable to speak the language they are “supposed” to know about.

I’m not denying what you’re saying and also I am not living in China, so I do not have that much knowledge about it to agree or disagree with what you said.

All I want to do is to make sure anon is well informed that their identity is validated.

If this answer doesn’t please you, then I will request for Chinese mods and/or followers to add on to what I need to say.

Diaspora Chinese people are not obligated to respect “concepts of identity” that disrespect us. You cannot invalidate our heritage and rob us of our agency and then demand respect you haven’t earned.

We’ll respect you when you give a shit about all the diaspora Chinese people who hate themselves because they can’t speak their language, all the diaspora Chinese people who had to forget their language for survival, and all the neuroatypical diaspora Chinese people who have wanted to commit suicide because they weren’t Chinese enough for you. A shitty, ableist, inherently prejudiced “concept of identity” that is the cause of these diaspora Chinese people’s suffering does not deserve respect, and neither do the people that uphold it.

I’m sorry, but if you can’t be assed to care about diaspora Chinese people who are hating themselves and even wanting to die, I can’t be assed to care about you. Fuck your feelings.

Have you guys heard about Chou Tzuyu/Zhou Ziyu/周子瑜? She's a 16yo Taiwanese KPOP star who was given a Taiwan flag by staff at a Korean show. This was screenshot by Huang An, who went on Weibo to claim Tzuyu supports Taiwanese independence. Result Chinese netizens have been threatening to ban her company from China, and all her schedules in China have been cancelled. She recently made a video apologizing saying she supports One China (which sounds unlike her) it's really gross the whole situation.

Yeah I don’t even keep up with KPOP stuff but like this is really ugly and complicated tbh. Historically Korea has supported as One China Policy but obviously lol kpop isn’t a political entity but I thought it’d just be worth saying. China is super aggressive about Taiwan = China which it has almost no political or historical grounds for making claims on. Just because ethinically Hokkian people came from to Taiwan to colonize it doesn’t make them Chinese in the long run l m a o. I hate to draw comparisons like this but are Americans still considered fundamentally British because the people who colonized America were originally from the UK?!

And like why shouldn’t she be holding a Taiwanese flag if she’s from fucking Taiwan???????????

Anyway it’s obvious that she was forced to make that statement and the PRC is fucking ugly to Taiwan and HK. 台灣就是台灣啊!🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼

Can I ask why you are even commenting on a Japanese Suicide Forest? You are not Japanese, you do not understand the mindset. You are a spoiled American. Look up Japanese history, more so what Japanese did to China and Vietnam people during WWII.

if you went back and read any of my ‘the forest’ tagged posts, you’d know that i was asked to do it. i also apologized and stated that i was wrong to speak out of line and make an issue specific to japan about east asian representation in america—the original author wrote it that way but i have amended it to bring light about facts specific to japan.

as for your ethnocentric bigotry, please refer to this post because i do not have the patience to deal with your level ignorance and hatefulness. you’re trying to make me...i don’t wanna say “relive” because it’s not quite the word since the experience is something god-awful my relatives went through. but you’re a fucking shithead for it.

you assuming i’m “spoiled” just because i’m american is just that—an ignorant assumption. my parents had to run from a horrific war where they witnessed people they lost only to go to another country that hated them and didn’t want them there. i live in a country where i am constantly made fun of and made to feel shameful for being who i am—god forbid i wear an ao dai. then when i visit vietnam, i’m made to feel shameful for being american. you speaking from a mindset that’s ignorant about diasporic e/se asians is inappropriate so you’d do well to shut the fuck up.

and FUCK YOU for thinking you can come at me like this. take your shitty ethnocentrism and shove it up your ass.

just because you have asian heritage doesn't make you an authority on asian culture and race-relations. you have no right to speak for them. they are not "your people". you're an american from california.

Oh, hi Solas/Abelas.

I am assuming you’re someone who lives in East Asia so I will do my best to be as respectful as possible about issues that are specific to East Asia.

However, I am also going to assume by this message alone that you are someone with little to no understanding of cultural appropriation, diaspora, and/or ethnocentricism because you showed no courtesy toward me in those aspects. If you (and anyone else) would like to learn very briefly about these topics, please read this short, educational piece by @reclaimingasia. It talks about non-diasporic Chinese people and diasporic Chinese people and how to treat cultural appropriation but it is a relevant parallel to poc living in western countries vs poc living in the homelands. You, Anon, especially need to pay attention to the last paragraph.

You’re semi-right though—I am not Japanese nor am I allowed to have any say in anything about Japan unless invited to do so (which I was at the time of posting what I am assuming you’re reacting to).

Please understand: I never have and never will claim to be an authority on Asian culture and race-relations. However, when it comes to East/South Asian representation in western media, I have every right to be a part of the conversation as it pertains specifically to my representation and visibility. So you keep to yourself when it comes to diasporic East Asian issues in the west and never cross that line ever again.

And if you’re a non-Asian person telling me this (because you say “them” and not “us”)—I say this with every bit of kindness—go get a blowjob from sharks.

I heard about how there are a growing number of men in Korea going to Vietnam, marrying a Vietnamese woman, and taking her back to Korea, and how there are "Vietnamese bride schools" to teach Vietnamese women how to assimilate into Korean culture and as a Vietnamese person I'm uncomfortable with how Vietnamese women are seen as mail order brides? Like I'm sure it happens in other Asian countries too but Korea is the one I'm most aware of. What do the Korean and Vietnamese mods think of this?

I think it’s gross as a Korean, all Asian women have been victims of this mail order bride system, including Koreans. There’s a Korean movie about a Vietnamese mail order bride, totally forget the name though… On the same token, it’s not very surprising. Koreans are very ethnocentric as a whole and consider Korea to be superior to other countries. -Mod Y

How do I talk to someone from the mainlands about cultural appropriation? A popular Chinese fashion blog posted a piece where Armani appropriated Chinese fashion & the mod said that Armani did it better than CN designers. I'm American-Viet/Chinese and they're CN-CN & they used that reason against me to invalidate my reason to be upset—that I'm not "CN-CN or full Chinese". They were also unfamiliar w/ cultural appropriation & defended Armani. I want to be civil but it was absolutely humiliating.

Ai ya. Homeland (non-diaspora) Asian people do not get to decide what’s cultural appropriation outside their country, because diaspora Asian people are the ones who get hurt by cultural appropriation occurring in the countries they’re diaspora in. Homeland Asian people can, however, decide what is cultural appropriation inside their countries.

NUANCE determines who can decide what is and isn’t cultural appropriation and in this case, diaspora Asian people are the ones who get to decide. They’re the ones directly affected, not homeland Asian people. Homeland Asian people have access to authentic Chinese clothing anytime, and they will not be treated badly for practicing their culture. Diaspora Chinese people rarely have access to authentic Chinese clothing (in fact I have so little access to it that I have to settle for cheap knockoffs made by white designers =_=), and when we wear our Chinese clothing we’re either ridiculed or exotified.

Also it’s extremely ethnocentric to say that people who aren’t “CN-CN” are not really Chinese like… they most likely dunno that 1) we are not treated like Americans here due to our ethnicity and almost not allowed to be American what with the “where r u frommmmm:)” and 2) culture does not just magically get erased when people are in a different country. it gets passed down. and there are community centers, saturday/sunday schools, and resources in general where you can go to learn your culture. This person does not fucking know shit about being diaspora and they can go sit on a tack.
