Hey all my CANADIAN Guys, Gals, and Non-binary Pals!

Did you all know that in Canada:

  • To this day, it is legal to refuse or fire someone from their job solely due to the fact that they are transgender;
  • It is legal to refuse or kick someone out of residency solely due to the fact that they are transgender;
  • It is legal to discriminate against someone solely due to the fact that they are transgender;

Did you know that?

Maybe, maybe not. But if you want to change this and see all these things go from legal to illegal you can help by adding your name to this petition to help pass Bill C-16. I’m not asking much and it is so simple yet it would make a world of difference for so many people in Canada!

If you care about transgender rights i encourage you to add your name! the goal is to reach 500 signatures and i’m 100% sure we can do it if we all work together! We are already past 1/5 of the way there and the numbers keep going up!

Even if you cant add your name PLEASE share this so hopefully others see it and can add their names!

The petition is at 322 signatures!!!!

We still need 178 more to reach the goal!!!!!! Pleas sign if you can and if you can’t pleas share!!!

C'MON EVERYONE! WERE IN THE HOMESTRETCH! THE PETITION IS UP TO 440 SIGNATURES!!!!!!!

EVERYONE, I KNOW WE CAN DO IT, WE ONLY NEED 60 MORE SIGNATURES!!!!

PLEASE SIGN THIS

@allthecanadianpolitics we still need more signatures

Just looked and its at 526 still going to sign it~

500 signatures is just the minimum a petition needs to have for it to be tabled in Parliament.

More signatures = the better chance Members of Parliament will be convinced to support this bill.

Keep signing and sharing! :)

just so you know

the US minimum wage that we all agree is too low to live on ($15,080/yr) is far more than many legally disabled people receive in benefits

the maximum SSI for a single person is $8,796/yr if a disabled person marries another, each drops to a max of $6,600/yr

while you’re fighting for 15 maybe look at that too

fogblogger

Not to mention we aren’t allowed to have more than $2,000 saved at a time. EVER. Like EVER or we lose all benefits completely. In the bank, in cash, it doesn’t matter. The government literally keeps us poor, while also making us pay immense amounts of money for health care that we require to even survive or function (let alone work enough to be able to get off of benefits, not to mention that there are a ton of people who will never be able to do that anyways). It’s a very, very broken system and not one that was ever meant to actually help anyone.

Plus, “marriage equality” is still a huge problem for disabled people (as you can see), which is something almost everyone is ignorant to/doesn’t care about.

DO NOT LEAVE DISABLED PEOPLE OUT OF YOUR ACTIVISM.

DO NOT LEAVE DISABLED PEOPLE OUT OF YOUR ACTIVISM.

It gets even worse!

IT IS LEGAL TO PAY DISABLED WORKERS LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE.

YES, YOU HEARD THAT CORRECTLY.

IT IS 100% LEGAL TO PAY DISABLED WORKERS LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE!

Goodwill is one of many companies that is notorious for paying their disabled workers pennies an hour. PENNIES! AN HOUR! PENNIES!

IT’s 100% LEGAL FOR DISABLED WORKERS TO BE PAID PENNIES AN HOUR!

Apparently, white physicians believe that Black folks feel no pain — in a literal sense.

As Sandhya Somashekhar reported in the Washington Post, a University of Virginia study — published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences — points to unconscious racial bias on the part of physicians.  These doctors may hold false and even outrageous beliefs concerning the biological differences between the races.

The subjects of the study included 222 white medical students and residents, and 92 random white laypeople with absolutely no medical training.  Each group was provided with 11 false beliefs and four true statements about the differences in biological characteristics between Blacks and whites.  Although many of the white laypeople believed many of the false statements, so too, did many of the white medical students and residents.  Half of the students and residents believe at least one of the false statements was “possibly, probably, or definitely true.”

For example, 58 percent of people from the general population believed Black people have thicker skin than whites.  However, 40 percent of first-year medical students agreed, as did 42 percent of second-year students, 22 percent of third-years, and 25 percent of residents.  Similarly, 39 percent of laypeople thought that Black blood coagulates more quickly than the blood of white folk, along with 29 percent of first-year students, 17 percent of second-years, 3 percent of third-years, and 4 percent of residents.

When told that Blacks have less sensitive nerve endings than whites, 20 percent of laypeople agreed, as did 8 percent of first-year med students, 14 percent of second-years, no third-years and 4 percent of residents.

The correct statements provided to the participants included the idea that Black people are more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke; that Blacks are less likely than whites to develop multiple sclerosis and other spinal cord diseases, and that African-Americans have denser and stronger bones than whites.

“The present work sheds light on a heretofore unexplored source of racial bias in pain assessment and treatment recommendations within a relevant population (i.e., medical students and residents), in a context where racial disparities are well documented (i.e., pain management),” wrote the authors of the report, including Kelly M. Hoffman of the Department of Psychology, University of Virginia, and her colleagues. “It demonstrates that beliefs about biological differences between blacks and whites — beliefs dating back to slavery — are associated with the perception that black people feel less pain than do white people and with inadequate treatment recommendations for black patients’ pain.”

“Participants who endorsed more false beliefs about biological differences between blacks and whites showed a racial bias in the accuracy of their treatment recommendations,” according to the report.

Hoffman told ABC News she was shocked at how many medical students believed the made-up medical facts.

“Initially we were a little bit surprised at the percent of endorsement among medical residents,” she said. “Things like black skin is thicker than white. … It’s just striking for some of the them.”

This most recent report builds on the work of prior research concerning the issue of racial bias in medicine.

A study released last year in JAMA Pediatrics found that Black and Latino children who are treated for acute appendicitis — which is a painful inflammation of the appendix — are less likely to receive painkillers than their white counterparts.

For moderate pain, Black children more likely received no medication whatsoever, while they were less likely to receive opioids for severe pain. Doctors were more apt to treat Black patients with nonopioid analgesia, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen.

The authors of the study cited doctors’ racial bias against Black children, surmising that physicians may believe Blacks have a higher threshold for pain, or are more prone to drug addiction, or are less worthy than whites of receiving such treatment.

Racism, apparently, is more painful than you may have realized.

Cree Ballah, 20, said she showed up for work at Zara’s Scarborough Town Centre location on March 23 with her hair in box braids gathered in the back.

One manager asked her to take the braids out of the bunch and returned later with a second manager, Ballah told CBC News.

They took me outside of the store and they said,

“We’re not trying to offend you, but we’re going for a clean professional look with Zara and the hairstyle you have now is not the look for Zara’

Then, she said, out in the busy mall where other Zara employees could see them, the managers proceeded to try to “fix” her hair.

She left the mall hurt and upset. She filed an official complaint with the company’s human resources department, claiming discrimination.

“My hair type is also linked to my race, so to me, I felt like it was direct discrimination against my ethnicity in the sense of what comes along with it”

Are you kidding!…she looks fabulous! The managers simply decided that whatever didn’t look European didn’t look professional. Racism pure and simple. #Hate it!

For the people who think it’s “just hair”.

People always wanna fucking fight me when I say that Zootopia was cop propaganda, but that isn’t even scraping the surface of the issues with this movie. (Spoilers under the cut, because I’m not a douchebag.)

I agree 100%. These were some issues in the movie that made me question the writers. Still got a long way to go.

Majority of those photos were before I made the apology and was unaware. Did you ever stop to think that I have feelings too? I would have rather you contacted me directly rather than making callout posts about me and making assumptions... That's all I have to say about the matter, hope you have a nice day.

Avatar

The reason I’m going about this publicly is that people have raised this issue with you directly time after time, after time, after time to no avail. Even with Wen’s initial callout, it was evident that he only posted it after you repeatedly replied with no-substance answers. I thought I’d just bypass all the inevitable bullshit, y’know?

“Majority of those photos”
image

All posted well after the callout, with captions implying you were shooting on the day, and not posting old photos. That’s 2/3.

Do you just expect everyone to believe that you haven’t taped your eyes in any of the photos you’ve posted since your “apology”? That you’ve just magically developed eyes that go upwards instead of drooping downwards, which you can turn on and off at will? That you have a monolid on/off switch? I know you claim that’s is just makeup done along the natural contours of your face, but natural creases (especially with ones as deep-set as yours) and shadows don’t just disappear with concealer, without the aid of tape physically pulling it taut. I don’t see how I can be making assumptions when I’m literally posting pictures that you yourself posted with no additional comments.

I mean,

People have explained to you how yellowfacing and altering your eye shape to appear “slanted” is rooted in Anti-Asian discrimintaion, but it appears that the message still hasn’t gotten through. It’s not just the physical existence of tape; it’s the squinting, the dramatic slanted eyeliner for characters who don’t have that eye-shape, the faked monolids.

You can argue that it’s just theatrical makeup, but that doesn’t change the fact that historically, this particular “style” of makeup has been used to mock and degrade Asians, barring them from employment in the acting industry, and further perpetuation of racist stereotypes.

And this is what really baffles me - you’re a fine cosplayer without having to tape your eyes. You already have a sharp jawline, straight nose, and a versatile eye-shape, so why do something that people have pointed out is racist, when you could do just as well without? Anyway, moving on.

From your “apology” post:

“I have deleted the photos of Ren Hojo and other photos of me manipulating my eyes with makeup.”

Why are your Ren Hojo pictures still on your worldcosplay? Why are your Erwin photos still up? Why are your Tadashi photos still up? I also recall you attempting to deny that you were trying to look Asian until Wen hit you with screencaps of yourself saying “trying my best to look like a 23 year old Japanese man ww” or something along those lines. So tell me, what is the truth?

Cry about it all you want it on instagram, call it bullying, preemptively position yourself as the victim, whatever. But face it - this is your comeuppance for being unrepentant in your yellowfacing. The fact that you’re still doing this and still flaunting photos on your page shows that despite your “apology” for the “alleged” “yellowfacing”, you actually care very little, if at all. Perhaps you should do a little introspection on why you’re getting called out again, why your mutuals and “respected friends” are unfollowing you, and why people are angry, instead of just putting it down to “jealousy”, and “tumblr’s toxic call-out culture” and absolving yourself of guilt.

Did I ever think about your feelings? Truthfully, no, because I was too busy thinking about every Asian person who’s had “ching chong” yelled at them by people pulling their eyes back so they look “sl*nty”. I was thinking about how East Asian people are historically caricatured as sl*nt-eyed rats, I was thinking about every Asian kid who’s cried because they were called a ch*nk, or had other racial epithets hurled at them. You won’t ever experience any of that though, because while you tape your eyes into slits, my race is just a cosplay you can take off at the end of the day.

Maybe you should be the one to think about feelings other than your own.

I hope you have a nice day, too.

“Stephanie Lampkin learned to code at age 13. By 15, she was a full-stack web developer, fluent in the languages of computer programming. She has a Stanford engineering degree and an MBA from MIT.

Still, she recalls making it to the eighth round of interviews in pursuit of a gig at a well-known tech firm in Silicon Valley, only to be told her background wasn’t “technical enough” for a role in software engineering.

Her app Blendoor lets job seekers upload resumes, then hides their name and photo from employers. The idea, says Lampkin, is to circumvent unconscious bias by removing gender and ethnicity from the equation.

In the course of her research, Lampkin found a National Bureau of Economic Research study showing that a “white-sounding” name (Emily or Greg, for example) can yield as many job callbacks as an additional eight years of experience for someone with an “African-American sounding” name (Lakisha or Jamal, in the experiment).

“It’s quantifiable,” Lampkin said. “We realized that hiding names and photos created a safer space. Women and people of color felt better sharing their information.”

THIS IS TOO COOL!!! CURRENT MOOD:

THANK YOU STEPHANIE LAMPKIN, YOU ROCK! Here’s hoping Blendoor is a huge success.

“I can’t believe I have to see a Furry Movie now.”

That “furry movie,” is well-written, beautifully animated film with wonderfully designed characters and beautiful world filled with amazing jokes, some of the best puns I’ve seen and heard in my entire life

OH YEAH

And it brilliantly handles the issues of racism, discrimination, and stereotyping during a time when these issues are becoming more and more apparent and significant in the media, and the message of acceptance is communicated to the audience in a way that’s accessible for moviegoers of all ages and doesn’t distract by spelling it out in a way that makes the audience feel like they’re being talked down to.

This movie is going to be super important to someone someday. This movie probably already is important to someone right now. There are probably kids who went to the theatre this weekend and Zootopia changed their lives. This could be the movie that gives some kid somewhere hope for the world that they’re currently living in. This movie and it’s message could be someone’s epiphany.

And people are simplifying it down to “The Furry Movie.”

Thank you cis people, for yet again proving that the only thing to be afraid of in the restroom is cis people.

“you can’t let trans women use the women’s restroom, or else we will send cis men into the women’s restroom specifically to intimidate you”

Avatar

If you need more evidence that this is specifically about attacking trans women and not about “protecting [cis] women’s privacy”, here you go. They don’t actually give a fuck about cis women’s privacy (if they did, they wouldn’t do this); they just want to make life as difficult as possible for us, and they see this as a way of doing that.

(On that note, I’m kind of morbidly curious to see what kinds of mental gymnastics the TWEFs will do to justify this. Because I’m sure that at least some of them will want to support it, even though it’s very clearly a case of males entering a female space.)

This just happened in Seattle!

A cisgender man went into a women’s changing room and undressed in front of women. This person presented as male and when staff spoke to him he did not identify as female or trans. He simply said that the new rules allowed him to use whatever changing room he wanted and that’s what he was doing. It was really obvious that this is an anti-trans activist trying to punish people.

So … I went to a trans support group in Seattle for the first time yesterday. And attendance was WAY up.

This is scary. Whatever the outcome of this fight, it’s succeeding in making trans people in the state feel less safe. Which is, of course, the whole point.

Hi I'm only like 25% Japanese, 20% Native American and 55% European and I was born in Kobe, Japan and at my school a lot of people make fun of me for being Asian. They mostly make fun of my eyes for a reason I don't understand when I tell them I'm only 25% they will be like "how can you be a percent of something?!" I've gone to teachers and they don't do anything except for filling out paperwork and they tell me how ugly I am. I really hate myself because of them and am lost. What should I do?

I don’t live in Japan so I don’t know what their specific laws are when it comes to handling harassment and discrimination because those two are exactly what you are facing right now. I also don’t know if something like the teacher calling you “ugly” would be grounds for firing as it is here in the states. I’d look into those as you have better primary resources than I do when it comes to Japanese law. If someone living there could help out anon, please go for broke!

If you don’t have the energy or money to pursue them legally—and because I cannot reach you immediately—there are a few sites I can recommend for you (and those who need immediate help). 7cupsoftea and iamalive provide free online therapy and if you need some more suggestions for support, psychcentral has some terrific ideas here.

Those people are wrong to project their insecurities onto you by telling you who they think you are. I’ll be honest: there isn’t much you can do to rid them of their ethnocentrism and phobia of mixed race people. I can only tell you that your identity is valid. Your feelings are valid and I understand why you would hate yourself after enduring so much unwarranted hostility. Call a person “st*pid” their whole life and they’ll start believing it. But it’s unfair to you. You are a much better person than they’ll ever be—they can’t even fathom your own existence. That’s how incredible you are. They have nothing on you, nothing!

What you choose to do is whatever is within your comfort: you can ignore them, you can call them out on it, you can try to gain confidence from their insecurities, etc. But it’ll all be at the expense of your mental health—calling people out, ignoring people, and/or building up your confidence from the bullshit takes a gargantuan amount of mental strain. I’m sorry for the non-answer. It’s a load of shit but you’re better than they are. Again, your identity and your feelings are valid.

I gotta rush to work but my ask box is always open :)

Dear Modern Western Feminism,

Modesty and lack of sexuality is NOT oppression. Just because I am not as naked as you want me to be or not practicing my ‘sexual expression’, doesn’t mean I’m not a feminist.

  • Stop insisting that I am oppressed, abused, or assuming that there is something wrong with me.
  • Stop the gross exaggeration (almost outright lies) about women in the Middle East.
  • Stop trying to fix me in the name of your so called “liberation”. There is nothing wrong with me.
  • Stop trying to exclude covered women from feminism. Part of feminism is the freedom to dress as I want, even if it means covering more than showing.
  • Stop disrespecting my religion and my beliefs. They are mine. I am not asking you to follow them. I am asking you to respect them.
  • Stop discrediting my choices. I am not forced to do what I do and dress as I dress. My choices are mine.

In all honesty, thus far in my life as a Muslim woman, western feminism has done nothing but complicate my life, force me to correct more and more misconceptions, and suffer more discrimination (some severe and from other women).

Just because my choice of clothing and how much skin I show isn’t as revealing as yours and I wholeheartedly believe in religion, that does NOT mean I need saving. You can’t liberate the free.
