this is what post brexit britain looks like, we have given in to xenophobia and racism, and it’s terrifying

this is why it irritates the hell out of me when I see people saying “it wasn’t about racism!” okay, maybe not everyone who voted out did it for that reason - most seem to be regretting it now they see and understand the consequences - but the result is encouraging the racists who did vote out for racist reasons to show their true colours.

And kindly everyone stop spreading the lie that “it’s just about xenophobia, saying it’s about racism is an American misunderstanding.” It is about racism AND xenophobia. These literal fascists do not care if they’re attacking a white EU migrant or a PoC British citizen/migrant from a non-EU country. This is what brexit has encouraged and made mainstream. Disgusting and inexcusable by any reasoning.

This here is why I say there’s a direct line between Brexit and the possibility of a Trump presidency.

A Trump presidency would have shit like this occurring all over the US.

OH WAIT IT ALREADY IS.

OH SHIT OH SHIT REASON MAGAZINE IS AGREEING (I can’t believe I’m linking to Reason Magazine to support my thesis!)

Direct fucking line.

Please note that some of these racist attackers are young white people. It’s not just the old Brits who are racist.

Hi there. If you’re just waking up

  • Brexit won
  • The £ plummeted to a 30-year low
  • Japan has stopped trading
  • Scotland is pushing for independence
  • Ireland is considering re-unification
  • The Dutch Freedom Party are calling for their own EU referendum

Well, this took off whilst I went to sleep for a couple of hours. An update:

  • David Cameron has resigned, a fact I’d never thought I’d be sad about
  • Donald Trump just landed in Scotland, because we haven’t suffered enough
  • Nicola Sturgeon says EU folk are “still welcome in Scotland” and “their contribution is valued”
  • She’s thrown down the gauntlet re: staying in and is petitioning the EU for membership. The result is “democratically unacceptable”
  • “I intend to take all possible steps to give effect to how Scotland voted. In other words, to secure our place in the EU”
  • Statement officially made that second independence referendum “highly likely”
  • The financial markets are a shitshow
  • Vote Leave have ALREADY backtracked on their two defining campaign promises (more money for the NHS, less immigration)
  • A motion of No Confidence has been leveled at Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who honestly lasted longer than I thought he would
  • The UK have lost £350 billion so far
  • Spain could re-take Gibraltar if they wanted to make a move
  • Morgan Stanley have started the process to move 2,000 investment banking staff from London to Dublin/Frankfurt
  • EU leaders are calling on the UK to get out ASAP
  • The New York stock exchange is down 500 points
  • From the amount wiped off shares, so far, divided by 32m voters… the cost is already at £6,000 per voter
  • Donald Trump has come out in support of the decision to leave, which is how you know we messed up real bad
  • Everything is fucked
  • I’m so sorry

TO ANYONE LIVING IN THE UK

There is a petition to try and call another referendum about the EU, with a rule asking for a 60% majority before a decision is made. Yes this is a shitty time, but hopefully there’s still a chance to fix things. The Leave campaign have already gone back on some of their promises before the referendum, so please, if you can, can you sign this? If we get 100 000 signatures parliament have to debate it, so please. Even if you’re not in the UK if you can share this to try and get it out there, that would be fantastic. Here’s the link:

A referendum is not a legally binding contract

Okay so I know I’ve been speaking about UK politics a lot at the moment, but it is quite important. Yesterday’s referendum is not necessarily a legally binding contract and can be over turned by the government, with enough encouragement and public support. Less than 24 hours after the decision to leave the EU was announced we are already seeing the negative repercussions such as the pound sterling dropping to its lowest value in over 30 years, and representatives from the Leave campaign have already told us they cannot provide what they promised.

However, there is an official open petition calling for a second referendum due to the fact that less than 60% of the country voted for this outcome, and in light of the consequences we’ve already seen many people have changed their minds and now would rather remain a part of the European Union. You do Not need to be 18 to sign, you just have to be a UK citizens or resident. Even if you’re neither of these things please reblog this so other people have to opportunity to sign

For any of my UK friends who do not already know this

not to be ‘that guy’ but can people (especially americans) not joke/make “shipping” posts about the EU referendum?? this is literally going to devestate every young working person, future children and migrants seeking refruge all because a bunch of racist old fucks (who will die in 20 years anyway) listen too much to horrible middle aged racists in power who hate immigrants just bc they want refruge in the UK from their wartorn countries.

as much as its fun to laugh at these brexit memes i don’t want anyone to forget how serious this actually is. i have one of my housemates crying in my room bc her career relied on the uk being a part of the eu (she wanted to go into foreign diplomacy). my mum is freaking out because the uk basically just put xenophobia and racism ahead of its own interests and she doesn’t know what that means for her immigrant self, or her british born foreign children. my brother-in-law who works for a french company is terrified that his job won’t be there tomorrow. i’m living in the netherlands rn and the pound has plummeted so much that the money i budgeted at the start of this month is no longer enough for me to make rent and eat. this is just the beginning and this is only how brexit is effecting one singular person (me). i can’t even imagine the wider damage this is gonna cause.

rationalisms

i know everyone is panicking rn and i am too but i’d just like to emphasize that the referendum is not actually legally binding in any way. the government is not legally required to act on the result. it’s basically just a very fancy opinion poll.

while the pressure to respect the vote of the people and the democratic process will be intense, the results were so incredibly polarizing (especially since scotland and northern ireland unequivocally voted remain and the leave result is literally solely england’s fault), and the consequences would be so devastating that there is a definitive chance the government could elect not to invoke article 50 of the lisbon treaty anyway.

they are very likely not gonna ignore it outright but they might take the issue to a parliamentary vote instead, which ironically could be argued for as the kind of parliamentary sovereignty leave voters complained brussel is taking away from the uk. if this should happen, MPs are majority pro EU and would very likely vote to remain.

considering the the pound has had its worst drop since 1985 and is still freefalling and the international stock markets were already reporting fatal crashes while a leave win was just projected, not even sure, the horrific economic effects leaving the eu would have should become clear quickly and might sober up quite a few people who didn’t (or didn’t want to) realize how catastrophic the result would be.
