Gallifrey, Doctor Who and other guilty pleasures

So today is the last Audio Drama Sunday before we reach our crowdfunding goal for Holmwood. What can I say? It's been a massive rollercoaster of a journey. We will have to see what happens on Thursday, but as we have a chance today, I wanted to thank everyone who has backed the project, supported us in any way, and enthused about Holmwood online on our various social media platforms over the last few months.

Georgia and I are known as writers really only in the niche world of Doctor Who IP, so we knew it was a massive risk to jump from Big Finish's safety net into the podcast community. Needless to say, everyone has been brilliant, and so so welcoming. We're so touched and honoured to have been supported and cheered on by all of you.

We're new to producing, casting and marketing, but we love the Dracula novel. We love creating spaces for queer and trans people in our writing. We love Holmwood. It is a massive part of who we are and why we came together as a couple. Jeremy and Maddie are so special to us, and seeing the love shared by everyone else puts us in awe regularly, especially the fan art and the memes.

Our crowdfund officially ends in three days. Three more days, and only £4899 left to raise.

Stream on Sunday at 6pm GMT+1

Hello, friends! Since the final days of the @theholmwoodfoundation kickstarter are coming up, I decided to have some fun and possibly help my friends to hopefully make the full season 1 of Holmwood come true. There are only a few days left and they are about 30% away from their goal, but maybe we could help them together!

The story is based on Dracula book and if you love vampires, horrors and podcasts, that's a project for you. Also for Gallifrey audio fans, Sean Carlsen is playing one of the main characters there, so!!! So tomorrow I will be art streaming and finishing this Holmwood sketch of the main characters of the podcast Maddie and Jeremy. We will talk a bit about the podcast, as well as regular stuff we talk on streams (Gallifrey audios, Hadestown, plus I wanted to gush about discworld), so please come, have some fun and support the project!

Forever

A scene from Gallifrey S04 Ep04: Forever, written by David Wise.

This scene is a fantastic and tense duel of wills between Romana and a particularly devious version of Narvin, and may be one of my favourite comics to date as what should have been "talking heads" came out pretty gripping! I died 1,000 deaths drawing page 3 XD

In the past week I met up with Seán and Gary, and got to meet Louise for the first time (along with the original Andred and Rodan from Invasion of Time!), so to say I'm fired up about Gallifrey right now would be an understatement...

Welcome to the Holmwood Foundation

Sanguis Vita Est

The Holmwood Foundation is a Found Footage Horror-Fiction Podcast created by Fio Trethewey @fiotrethewey (Big Finish: Gallifrey War Room, 18th Wall Productions) and Georgia Cook @georgiacooked (Big Finish: The Eleventh Doctor Chronicles, Gallifrey War Room, BBC Books, The Dracula Daily Sketch Collection). It is a modern day sequel to the gothic novel Dracula.  We are currently working on building interest while we record and create the pilot episode ahead of crowd funding in October.

What is the Holmwood Foundation about?

We follow Jeremy Larkin and Maddie Townsend, two co-workers at the Holmwood Foundation: a secret organisation that has been maintaining and studying the remains of Count Dracula over the last 130 years. This is a story about identity and self discovery, family loyalty and devotion, all wrapped around a nightmare of a road trip with a rejuvenating severed head, incredibly sincere Victorian ghosts and an analogue recorder.

When can we listen to The Holmwood Foundation?

We plan to release the pilot during the Kickstarter. However, once crowd funded, we hope to release the first season in Spring 2025. Follow for further updates as production progresses!

Extra Content:

Between now and October, we will slowly be sharing small pieces of related content to do with the Holmwood Foundation. These might be emails, or obituaries, maybe even interviews. Your gallifrey audios comics are amazing. Your art style is very distinctive and your characters are expressive. They are such a joy to look at and read. Plus, adapating an audio media to such a visual one is particuarly impressive. I love the dynamism you manage to give despite the lengthy dialogue material. One of my favourite example of that is the first few pages of your imperiatrix scene. Two people and a tin dog in a room, quite a lot of dialogue to cover, well more tricky even, quite a lot of dialogue which is not fairyly distributed among the characters. And you just make it work really well and give it dynamism. (all of this before, in the last page, it ends of some sort of action-y sequence so...). Just I love your gallifrey comics and I appreciate greatly that we get to see and read them. They are such a joy! (Also I love Alchemy so far, it's so much fun).

That's such a sweet message, thank you! The challenge of reimagining the audio in the visual language of comics, while preserving the original script, is a big part of what makes this so much fun for me. The Imperiatrix scene was the very first one I made and I laughed myself silly drawing the chase scene. I'm really glad you enjoy them, and I think you're really going to enjoy Alchemy! (I know I am!)

Gallifrey: Alchemy p3

If you missed the beginning of this fan comic, start here!

Just one page in this update so I can get my pagination sorted*. I bloody love these two.

*Details for the technically minded: As I'm publishing this 2 pages at a time, any cliffhanger obviously needs to be at the end of the second page. But I always work on the basis this might end up printed, and in a book that right-hand page corresponds to odd-numbered pages. I was so eager to start I totally forgot that the first release needed to be of 3 pages so every subsequent one would correspond to a book spread. This has now been rectified 😅

Gallifrey: Alchemy pp1-2

So excited about this – I've been writing a completely original, full-length Gallifrey story set in the early days of the series, and finally started drawing! As it's going to be a much longer comic I'll release it feuilleton-style a couple of pages at a time.

This story is set immediately after A Blind Eye, the final episode of Gallifrey season 1. I love how Narvin and Romana can't stand each other at that point in time and yet... but I'll say no more, and hope you enjoy it!

About the Comics

Taking a break from the madness that is moving my studio, to think back to the wonderful weekend that was Gallifrey One and all the lovely people I met there. It's really a joy to connect with other Doctor Who fans and especially the Gallifrey fandom. I'm not listing people because I'm bound to forget someone (got into memorable trouble for that already!) and there are so many I met without ever exchanging names.

Anyway, I had a printed copy of the comics I made so far, for the purpose of autographs from involved writers and actors (Gary Russell called me insane which coming from him I take as a stamp of approval) and it was really nice to hear directly from people who enjoy them! Several of you have shown interest in buying them in print as well, so I wanted to share what I have in mind for that. The copy I had was put together hastily for Gally1, but what I really want to do is draw at least one short scene for each episode of "early Gallifrey" (seasons 1-6) – and then print them in a volume that I can consider complete. Ambitious, I know, but I only started in September so looking at the progress below, I think it's doable in time for next year...

  • ✅ 0 Erasure
  • 1.1 Weapon of Choice
  • 1.2 Square One
  • 1.3 The Inquiry
  • 🚧 1.4 A Blind Eye
  • ✅ 2.1 Lies
  • ✅ 2.2 Spirit
  • 2.3 Pandora
  • 2.4 Insurgency
  • ✅ 2.5 Imperiatrix
  • 3.1 Fractures
  • 3.2 Warfare
  • ✅ 3.3 Appropriation
  • ✅ 3.4 Mindbomb
  • 3.5 Panacea
  • 4.1 Reborn
  • 4.2 Disassembled
  • 4.3 Annihalation
  • 4.4 Forever
  • 5.1 Emancipation
  • 5.2 Evolution
  • 5.3 Arbitration
  • ✅ 6.1 Extermination
  • 6.2 Renaissance
  • 6.3 Ascension

My first fan comic could fit in here if there are pages to spare, that would be chronologically correct, but it doesn't have to... (I say first because I've been writing a longer one, God knows how I'm going to find the time though!)

Thoughts welcome!

Lies

Opening scene of Gallifrey S2 Ep1: Lies, written by Gary Russell (who called me insane in LA last week and meant it as a compliment). A fantastic scene I've been wanting to do for a while (Brax!!), only held back by how daunted I was at the prospect of drawing Miles Richardson. Alsop it presents the extra challenge of a long monologue, and how to keep that visually interesting.

As this is a flashback to way way back, when Braxiatel was a modest tutor, I wanted to underline his youth and lack of cardinal's skullcap. Coming across a picture of him with this hairstyle really helped! He's a dream to draw. Young Mary Tamm was more tricky but it was lovely to have a scene with her.
