its sooo devastating how the survivors of robert’s rebellion that we meet are all, at least in some ways, stuck at the age they were during the war. ned thinks of both lyanna and seeing the dead bodies of elia/aegon/rhaenys in the throne room constantly and it impacts so many of his decisions. cersei’s behavior— catty rivalries with teenage girls, whining at tyrion all through acok to make tywin come back to KL, etc— is more like that of a sixteen year old than a 32 year old. catelyn’s been pissed about ned bringing jon home for literally fourteen whole years at the start of the story. even lysa tully is still pining after petyr like a teenage girl in love despite barely seeing him for a decade and a half… tfw you will never get over the things that happened to you when you were seventeen

The funniest thing about fandom wank over whether Sansa or Arya is most like Lyanna is that you’re looking past the most obvious candidate aka Robb. Someone who only exists through other people’s memories, a shrine for people to flagellate themselves at, the beautiful dead girl whose absence defines the narrative more than her presence ever could?? That’s literally Robb’s whole point as a character.

GRRM's treatment of Ratgar is something I go back and forth on a lot and is a prime example why Death of the Author is a thing lol. I saw one fan say that anyone with critical thinking skills (so let's remove Targies from the equation) would see R as a douchebag but she was annoyed because she thinks GRRM himself does not see R that way and I kind of agree lol. I keep seeing some meta writers saying that GRRM "definitely thinks badly of R and R/L is some commentary on grooming", etc., and I'm not saying I totally disagree, but I 100 percent believe when GRRM conceived of R/L he meant for it to be a romantic, completely consensual star crossed lovers situation and R was meant to be a tragic, but Capital R romantic figure. However, that fan also said that because so much time has passed since he wrote the first book (90s to 2023 lmao) a lot of the shit GRRM romanticized is now seen as problematic and would need to be "fixed" or retconned. That being said, I don't think ADOS will see the light of day so we may never get the full R/L backstory or GRRM may choose to have what happened with R/L forever be some amorphous mystery (the more I think of it the more I think this will be the case for various reasons). I also don't think GRRM himself has a lot of what happened worked out in his head as he is not a plotter, but a seat of his pants writer and changes things as they go. He's the type that puts things in his writing that look/sound cool or interesting and then needs to find a way to bring it together which is one of the reasons it's taking him forever to get the second to last book out.

(in reference to this ask)

I agree we need to remember the impact of his style of writing. He made a blog post last year talking about that, how he can reach a dead end or explores and finds something wonderful, how he’s discovering things as he writes, so it’s good to strive to be as open minded to revelations as the author is. Although yes, we should all feel free to dislike and criticize some of those developments!

why are arya stans so obsessed with proving that arya is lyanna come again? arya on her own is already so much better than lyanna, because she has an actual personality. lyanna's story is so sad too, why would anyone want that for arya

they think lyanna is asoiaf’s helen of troy so if arya is like her, then arya will be super pretty and desired by men (which leads to gross things like jonaryas being excited at the idea of arya being a courtesan). never mind that lyanna is tragic or that she has unconventional beauty, meaning that not everyone is going to think she’s as bewitching as helen.

anyway i think sansa has more parallels with elia than lyanna. of course like arya, sansa will and already has avoided the dark ending of her narrative twin.

♕♔ Jon & Sansa | The Match That Was Promised

“Someday your husband will sit there and you will sit by his side.”
“Ned Stark’s bastard has been named King in the North, and that murderous whore Sansa stands beside him.”
“You wanted to be a Queen, to sit next to a handsome young King on the Iron Throne.”
“I love him, Father, I truly truly do, I love him as much as Queen Naerys loved Prince Aemon the Dragonknight.”
“Sweet one,” her father said gently, “listen to me. When you’re old enough, I’ll make you a match with someone who’s worthy of you. Someone who’s brave and gentle and strong. This match with Joffrey was a terrible mistake. That boy is no Prince Aemon, you must believe me.”
Jon and Robb were not little boys when they fought, but knights and mighty heroes. “I’m Prince Aemon the Dragonknight,” Jon would call out.
“Drifting snowflakes brushed her face as light as lover’s kisses, and melted on her cheeks. She could feel the snow on her lashes, taste it on her lips. It was the taste of Winterfell. The taste of innocence. The taste of dreams.”
“A snowflake danced upon the air, then another. Dance with me, Jon Snow, he thought. You’ll dance with me anon.”
“In Sansa’s dreams, her children looked just like the brothers she had lost. She would name them Eddard and Brandon and Rickon. Sometimes there was even a girl who looked like Arya.
“I might someday hold a son of my own blood in my arms. A son was something Jon Snow had never dared dream of, since he decided to live his life on the Wall. I could name him Robb.”

1) I'm not shocked Braime's and RxL stans are usually one and the same. Both want the major female presence in the man's life (Elia/ Cersei) to suffer, be considered ugly and detestable by everyone, to be murdered and put off to the side, be some adulterous 'whore' for their Madonna-whore complex minds, have their kids murdered in front of them. They get SUCH satisfaction seeing Elia/ Cersei suffer and lose everything esp. something related to their beauty. I mean they love Cersei's weight gain

Avatar
2) and they take glee over Cersei 'karma' and RxL stans love pointing out their ableist arguments and how 'ugly' and 'weak' Elia was bc she never had the 'wolf/ hotheaded/ firey personality of Lyanna' or the 'intelligent, sweet, singing, prophetic Rhaegar' lmao like any of those traits helped either one of them. They can't stand that everyone sees Elia as nothing more than the dutiful, perfect Queen material while ppl see Lyanna as just an impulsive Lord's daughter and Rhaegar as just potential.

it’s tew much tbh

Lyanna had only been sixteen, a child-woman of surpassing loveliness. Ned had loved her with all his heart. Robert had loved her even more. She was to have been his bride.

AU where Lyanna survives and marries Robert, becoming queen of the seven kingdoms.

He knew nothing of his mother; Eddard Stark would not talk of her. Yet he dreamed of her at times, so often that he could almost see her face. In his dreams, she was beautiful, and highborn, and her eyes were kind. (requested)
