Land of the Tender
everyone i know who got to this scene experienced the most violent whiplash (myself included) 🍖🍃
hualian i love you so so much i would never criticize you for getting it on but. GUYS. RIGHT NOW??
Every day I think about how the genre of TGCF shifts depending on the pov character.
i like thinking about how xie lian, for as sassy as he is in his head in the books, never once comes across as rude to anyone who doesnt deserve it. he's exceedingly kind in ways that i feel like kind of get shafted in the forms of media where you can't read his thoughts
particularly lan chang/jian lan and cuocuo. no matter how rude she was to him through the whole story, there's never a hint of judgement. only sometimes a bit of exasperation. he protects her from harm, tries to hype her up, and is probably the one person she can talk to earnestly and openly with no hint of the facade she puts on in ghost city. cuocuo makes everyone react in disgust except for xie lian. a number of times he thinks of cuocuo doing objectively disturbing things like licking his mom's face with his long weird tongue as "cute". and at the end of it all, he gives her a charm for cuocuo to help purify him and lets her go off on her way by her own decision, instead of forcibly bringing her back to feng xin
and when he acts and thinks this way sandwiched in between a story where he clearly is not boundlessly kind and does get sick of people despite not showing it on the surface, i think it sticks out more. like the reason he laughs at the bad shit hua cheng does is because hua cheng just doesn't have his filter; hua cheng does/says the shit he wishes he could. so when he's exceedingly kind even in his thoughts to someone everyone else can't help but be visibly repulsed by, it really sticks out
Family bath time!
I love that Xie Lian’s giant statue didn’t have the sword, only hilt and sheath, because Hua Cheng didn’t make the blade, but Xie Lian’s “Land of the Tender” statue had parts necessary to have sex. And then Hua Cheng says that he had no “inappropriate” thoughts while working on statues. Liar, liar.
