How tall was Freddie Mercury?

Before I get into this, let me just say that I don’t actually have any idea how tall Freddie Mercury was. However, I looked into it a while ago and now I’ve decided to share my findings.

See, the thing is, Google would have us believe that Freddie was 1.77m tall. And I’m not so sure that’s true. Why? Well, let me explain…

Here we have the heights of Roger Taylor and Rami Malek, according to Google. (I can only include so many pictures in one post, but at least to me, it seems obvious from all pictures of the band I’ve ever looked at that Roger was a couple cm taller than Freddie and Deaky was a few cm taller than Roger, and Brian was the tallest. So those are the “facts” I’m working with here.) I have two issues with these numbers straight away.

1) If Deaky is 1.80m and Roger is 1.79m they’re only 1cm apart. That seems off to me.

2) If Rami Malek is 1.75cm tall, he is 10cm taller than Lucy, however:

He very definitely isn’t.

And then it gets interesting, because here are pictures of Roger and Rami side by side.

Huh, it looks as though Roger (who is crouching a tiny bit here) is only a little taller than Rami. Of course, Roger is a bit shorter now than he used to be.

And then, will you look at that, going past the very first Google result (to, like, the third), we find this:

Now this seems a lot more plausible for both Rami and Roger, which would mean that Freddie was a few cm shorter than 1.76m.

Elton John, it would appear, is roughly Freddie’s height or perhaps a tiny bit shorter.

How tall was Elton John?

1.71cm or thereabouts.

So, in conclusion, I now believe Freddie Mercury was about 1.72cm tall. Fight me. (I’m joking, please don’t fight me, I just looked into this for fun! 🙈)

Why is Google wrong? Well, the boys (Roger and Freddie) lied about their heights a lot! Look at this:

Here, Roger would have us believe that he is as tall as Deaky and Freddie wants us to believe that he was 1.78m tall and weighed 54kg. 😂 Wtf, Freddie.

Awsome! Thanks for all the detective work (and I love how you start your post on Freddie’s height with the disclaimer that you don’t actually know Freddie’s height xD That’s the spirit of scientific endeavor 😄👍).

I haven’t actually dug into it (and depending on which photo you choose, which website to believe etc.pp you get such different results). For what I’ve written so far, ony the relative height between Roger and Freddie has been important *cough* But my guesstimate is close to yours: Freddie in the lower 170 range, Roger a couple of cm taller than that, John a bit taller still - and Brian towering above them :D

What makes this so difficult is a) to get a solid starting point (aka someone who’s height we know about for sure who appears in photos with all of them), b) perspective and c) posture. Like, Freddie tends to hold himself up a bit taller than the rest, John almost always does his lil hip bend…

So here’s Queen with Diego Maradona. We don’t know for sure how tall he is (probably around 165, but certainly below 170). He’s not standing perfectly straight, but everyone is either crouching or leaning down so as not to dwarf him.

John and Roger appear to be if similar height, but John does the hip thing and his feet are a bit further apart. Both are leaning down a bit. Freddie is crouching, but keeps his upper body straight. If I stand like that, i lose a good 5cm - still taller than Diego. (Let’s not talk about Brian, who just folded himself up in like 4 dimensions at the same time) Where am I going with this? No idea. Just… this is hard, okay?

Also just gonna throw in this. Similar footwear, similar posture (expect Brian, who’s leaning and standing back)… still don’t know where I’m going with this…

Damn, now I actually am starting to believe that Deaky and Roger could be as close as 1cm apart! But then what about Freddie and Elton?!? 😂 😱

This is impossible! And just to confuse things further, here is Debbie Leng, a model (their heights tend to he accurately reported, right?)

Her reported height is 1.75cm, and with what looks like a small-ish heel, she is… a bit taller than Roger? The same? *squints*

I love this: putting them together like this shows exactly how this photo shoot is three men and a hyperactive toddler

You know what gets me? The first few months after watching BoRhap, I could barely tell Brian May and Gwil apart. Now, I look at him here like: Oh my GOD, his face looks NOTHING like Brian’s, how could I have ever thought they looked the same! lol

Gwilym absolutely NAILED pretty much all of Brian’s facial expressions, posture, little quirks, how he would blink when he’s deep in thought, the way he sits and stands, the guitar playing etc. But I agree, he doesn’t look like Brian at all.

IMO this is the only moment in the movie where he remotely resembles Brian for a split second, and I think it’s because their side profiles look most alike. If you squint, you might just mistake him for the real thing!

This is the only photo I can think of where Brian looks a tiny bit like Gwilym.

I agree, just wanted to add that I loved these kinds of photos so much, though:
