South American cougar (Puma concolor concolor) by Gregory "Slobirdr" Smith Via Flickr: One of the most wanted species on my list while leading tours was to see a mountain lion. Trackers in the area that abuts Torres del Paine National Park have been able to track some of the fifteen pumas that roam a private ranch that abuts this park. Silent Approach of the Puma by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: This wild female Puma was very close to us (this image is completely uncropped, but shot with a telephoto lens and teleconverter), but she was completely silent. Here she returns to her kill after feeding, allowing a young male to eat a portion of it, and marking her turf near the kill. Near Torres del Paine National Park, Patagonia, Chile.

Protecting Her Kill by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: Puma (Puma concolor) named "Hermanita" (little sister) killed a Guanaco up on the hill, and was feeding on it all morning. When she finished her breakfast, this wild female Puma patrolled the area surrounding the kill, scent-marking and searching for signs of any intrusion. Here she licks her nose (some biologists think this makes the nose more sensitive) and continues her patrol.

Eye-level View of Hermanita by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: Her belly is full. She's been feeding on her Guanaco kill all morning. You'd think she'd just lie down and take a nap. But, no, this is Hermanita, so first she zig-zags across the entire area surrounding the kill. She scent-marks and climbs to the edge of the cliff and looks suspiciously around. Then she pivots, faces us, and heads down hill. That's a snow-covered mountain behind her. Laguna Amarga area, near Torres del Paine National Park, Patagonia, Chile.

Proud Mother, Curious Cub by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: Wild Puma (Puma concolor) mother spent a couple hours in the bush with this cub. The other 2 cubs were nowhere to be found. After letting this cub nurse, and a bit of play, the mother got up and stared out into the clearing and up at us. We were up on a bluff overlooking this scene. When the cub joined mom at her side it seemed like the youngster finally noticed our presence. Here it seems temporarily intrigued by us. Lago Sarmiento, near Torres del Paine, Patagonia Chile.

Puma on Patrol by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: Wild female Puma (Puma concolor or Felis concolor) patrols the area surrounding the site of a kill she made the night before. There are remnants of her meal on her whiskers. She used the tall grass to conceal the Guanaco carcass. After feeding she paced back and forth, alert for potential intruders, and she scent marked the area to make sure everyone knew the owner of this meal.
