I come from a time a thousand years ago, when gods walked among mortals. And the world was ruled by magic. Like you, I protected my home as First Knight, a member of the Brass Ring, a group similar to yours. And also like you, I assumed the best of them. I was blind as my friends condemned our civilization with their curiosity. Their hubris.

You mean the Calamity?

The gods set to war upon Exandria, and in the chaos, I found myself face to face ith the Lord of Torment himself. But instead of destroying me, he gave me a choice. Die with the rest or join him, and spare my family. I thought if I had enough time, I could reach him, save him, tame his turbulant heart. For my folly, I watched my husband and son fade with the rigors of time, losing even the memory of me. As if I never existed at all.

the direction the last question went was so good re: the urge to subvert genre and keep the audience surprised, engaged, when often what is really necessary is taking those narrative beats and honing in on making them extraordinary—a celebration of everything that came before that brought shape & scaffolding to the stories we continue to tell

I don’t wanna be soft but the reality of creatives being able to collaborate directly with the original creators of a rich story and characters and love of this boundless fantastical world, it really must reignite their own passion of creating cos they can look right into the light in another creative’s eyes of something they love, and such love and passion just is so contagious and fulfilling and even as a viewer and a fan it’s so unparalleled with how satisfying not only the final product but the fact that all of these insanely talented and passionate individuals came together with the burning desire to have that transcend past themselves into a love letter to everyone who ever fell into this world and found love in it

Grog’s strength comes when he realizes that he’s trusted.

It’s definitely also because his friends are there to fight when he calls but just as much of it comes from the fact that Pike calls for him and doesn’t turn away when he can’t answer. She just keeps calling because in that moment she trusts him more than he trusts himself.

For Grog, reciprocal trust was something learned from the Trickfoots. Its a relatively new concept to him. The only kinds of trust in the tribe are blind trust that the Thunderlord will lead the herd in the right direction, and a begrudging trust that the people fighting next to you won’t be the ones to kill you. If you’re lucky they might go so far as to keep you from dying once in a while. That’s as far as it goes.

Being able to fully trust a team and to be fully trusted in return is different. With Vox Machina there’s no risk that they will leave if he shows weakness. There’s no chance that they’ll leave him behind or judge him for his heart. And that’s a huge part of Grog’s success in the Killbox.

The other half is realizing that even when he doesn’t trust himself he is still trusted by his friends. Even when his strength isn’t what it could be there’s no less trust in him. They believe he will be there and do his best to help no matter what state he’s in. They trust him to act.

Knowing that his friends don’t think any less of him, knowing they still trust him, that’s not something Grog would ever take for granted. It’s not implicit for him. This is different and special and worth fighting for. And it’s what Grog needed to bring him back to himself.

something about how grogs herd beat him nearly to death for being weak vs how vox machina see grog at his weakest and immediately rush in without hesitation to fight for him and protect him

something about how grogs blood family left him for dead for showing mercy and kindness, but how that kindness eventually led to him joining vox machina, his new family, and how it was his kindness that made the rest of vox machina fight to save him

something about how grogs uncle equated kindness with weakness and cast him out because of it, but in continuing to be kind and refusing to be like his uncle, grog earned a new family, one that stays by him even at his weakest, especially at his weakest, and how he is so much stronger because of it
