Noticing a fair amount of ka'athyra / Vulcan harp discussion going around, so here's the working model I got to see back in Feb. 2020 at a very brief K/S gallery show in Chicago. (And no... I did not get to play it, much as I wanted to.) 💙✨️🎵 One of the staff at the gallery did turn it on (it has an electronic tone generator and amplifier built into it) and pluck a few strings to demonstrate the sound; it was perfectly eerie-but-beautiful.

Originally meant for “Elaan of Troyius” Literally the best I can do as evidence right now tho is a screenshot from memoryalpha because all links I can find directly to the script are broken?? And I don’t have the novelization BUT the point is we didn’t imagine this out of nothing lmao, it wasn’t the fanfic brainrot this time. Sarek actually IS that guy he actually would and did do this

Literally the face Kirk makes when Spock agrees to play a love/mating song, explains that the lyre was used in ancient times to "stimulate the fury" of mating, and Kirk replies, "We'll need some stimulation--very fast" :

And then once Kirk leaves and the other three are staring after him, McCoy tells Spock, "If you're going to serenade that one, you'd better put some real emotion into it." [emphasis mine 😘 I mean of course he was talking about Elaan, not Kirk...]
