Rafiki (2018) dir. Wanuri Kahiu

‘Rafiki’: Kenya Bans First Cannes Movie Over Lesbian Romance Storyline. Kenyan authorities announced it would ban lesbian romance film “Rafiki” ahead of its Cannes Film Festival debut, on the grounds that it “promote[s] lesbianism” in violation of Kenyan laws prohibiting gay sex. “Rafiki” is the first Kenyan film ever invited to the internationally renowned festival.

It sold out both sessions, yeah! I loved it. It’s my favourite film I’ve seen at the festival so far (but Disobedience was also great and important in its own way). The attention to detail in displaying the culture and neighbourhood the characters lived in was really beautiful, the colours were gorgeous, it was a very pretty film to watch. And the story itself was quite emotional and well-acted. I definitely recommend that people get out and see it!

Oh yeah, they did mention that it was very kenyan. I’m pretty sure the kenyan viewers will even appreciate it so much more!

It really was! The director made beautiful use of the environment she shot in, the music was awesome, everything felt very local and real. The whole movie read like a love letter to Nairobi to be honest. Gorgeous.

wow i’m c r y i n g

how about the chemistry btw the actresses?

Unnfff don’t get me started. So subtle and innocent and sweet. They had a really quiet, shy affection for each other but the bravery in it wasn’t lost on anyone either. My heart is re-breaking reflecting on it. Both actors did great jobs on their own but together they were something really beautiful.

I hope you get to see the movie soon, darling! I hope it’s everything you want it to be.

can you believe it was their first acting ever wow i’m really looking forward to seeing it! so here for it. Thanks for this hot tea lmao ❤

Whatttt I didn’t know this, amazing!!!

Also, if anyone wants to check out more stuff from this still quite young female director (Wanuri Kahiu), she made a cool female-led Kenyan sci-fi short film called Pumzi which people should check out. She’s also done a TED Talk on Afrofuturism as a genre. Very cool, talented person - can’t wait to see what else she does.
