Ode to Okra ~ since moving to the south, I have discovered its wonders.
Been quite a while since I did any field sketching, so I’m a little rusty, but getting back in the groove!

Another older sketch from the Monterey Bay—a view from Point Lobos. In this scene I saw pelicans, a Peregrine Falcon, and Risso’s dolphins. And of course the beautiful Dudleya in front!
We’ve had lots of rain lately here in NC. It reminded me of this watercolor sketch I made at my old apartment, where snails dotted the plants and sidewalks any time it rained.
Lately, I’ve had mainly pet portraits to share while I work on some other commissions and projects. To break it up I thought I’d post this field sketch of Chicken of the Woods I did a couple years ago in Monterey. At the time I knew little about mushrooms, so I did my best to carefully document this shelf mushroom growing on a eucalyptus tree. When I later ID’d it, I was delighted to find out it’s a choice edible, and one that’s fairly easily identified. Hope to sketch some more shrooms as it warms up!
Inktober 03 — Leek.
When it comes to foraging, I figured “leek” would refer to wild leeks, also known as ramps. I drew these before for my edible alliums poster, and also used to get them from a farmer’s market when I lived in Michigan. They are so delicious!
For Inktober, I am drawing forageable items from the game Stardew Valley.
Inktober 02 — Daffodil.
I am starting by doing spring forageables first. Growing up, there was a hill in my parents’ front yard that would produce beautiful yellow daffodils every spring. I loved seeing the green stems poke out the ground and knowing they would return this year!
Day three will be up later today!

Spent a rainy Sunday morning doing some sketching, something I haven’t done in a while. I filled a page with Wilson’s warblers in preparation for an upcoming piece. These little guys are some of my favorite to spot hopping through low bushes... I’ve always thought they look like they’re wearing tiny black toupées!
A little scene sketched while sitting on a fallen sycamore tree in Big Sur. This should be the first of many trips down there this summer! (at Andrew Molera State Park)
here’s a quick little field sketch from the top of fremont peak in california! thank you all for the nice comments and new followers!
This past fall I came across these mushrooms on a eucalyptus tree. Knowing nothing about fungi and little about plants in central CA, I took down as many notes as I could, and later identified it as sulfur shelf mushrooms, or “chicken of the woods,” a common edible! Turns out the “decayed” part of the tree was where the fungus was digesting it.
