Leo: July 23 - August 22. Fixed Fire sign. Loyalty, leadership, generousity, outgoing, ambitious, lionhearted. Color: Orange, red, gold. Glowing warm colors. Associated with a roaring fire, the Sun, the Heart. Leos tend to be talented, creative, and dramatic, warm and enthusiastic, dynamic and idealistic, but can also be vain and stubborn. Natural leaders. Leo here is a woman in glowing armor with a fiery red mane of hair, carrying the banner of her people. :)

I got permission to post the interior illustrations for the 2014 Astrology Calendar for Llewellyn Worldwide! I’m going to post one sign per day until we get through them all. :) The Llewellyn calendar starts with Capricorn, so that’s where I will start as well.
Capricorn: December 22 to January 20. A Cardinal Earth sign. Hardworking, responsible, down-to-earth, stubborn. Dominant colors: grey, navy blue, indigo, brown/black. They are associated with stonework and high up, cold places (among other things), so I chose to portray the sign as an architect working on a castle/fortress high in the snowy mountains.

Today’s sign is Aries! This is part of a set of illustrations I did for the Llewellyn Worldwide 2014 Astrology Calendar, which I am posting daily :)
Aries: March 21 to April 20. Cardinal Fire sign. Assertive, dominant, impulsive, adventurous, tend to be leaders. Dominant colors: Red, red, and more red. The sign is also associated with new beginnings (as Aries is the official beginning of the astrological calendar), fire, energy, athleticism, pioneering, leadership, stubbornness and a need to have their own way. Here, Aries is climbing up/down a volcano in an ‘idgaf’ sort of way. (Also, may I just say I’m very happy that my art director let me put some beefcake in this calendar, haha. ^.~)

Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21. Mutable Fire sign. Colors: Deep purple, burgundy and deep red. Outgoing, athletic, curious, spiritual, confident, high spirited, restless. Often are wanderers, truth-seekers, believers, at least metaphorically. Have universal concerns and strong beliefs and want to save the world. That said, they are also very fun-loving, gregarious, and great to be around. Ruled by Jupiter and typically associated with an archer, so I’ve depicted the sign as an archer high up on a hill, shooting fire into the sky. (I guess she’s on Ganymede or something since Jupiter is that big in the sky. XD )
I want to give very special thanks to Lindsey Carmichael, Olympic Bronze medalist archer, who posed for me for this sign and helped me out immensely with getting the archery parts to look halfway accurate (which I would have completely failed at without her help). She is an amazing and super-nice person, and I am incredibly honored that I got to work with her. Thanks, Lindsey!! <3 (and thank you for being so patient with me, haha)

Scorpio: October 23 - November 21. Fixed Water sign. Colors: deep red, royal blue, black. Intensely emotional, curious, intuitive, passionate, possessive, powerful, determined. Frequently associated with sexuality, the desire to merge with another, and to find fulfillment/completion with a partner or “other half.” Worries about how to make their needs met by other people; wants to receive rather than give. Emotions are incredibly intense, but often hidden beneath the surface. Associated with deep waters filled with secrets, transformation, the Underworld, repressed or hidden emotions. Scorpios have the passion and determination to get whatever they want done. In my illustration, I have Scorpio standing in a pool of still water in a cenote, holding her partner possessively but revealing little of her emotions in her face. (One of their associated stones is selenite, so I put a bunch of selenite crystal formations in the cave because it’s pretty :B also I love that the AD let me get away with putting the Scorpio symbol on the dude’s lower back, haha.)

Leo: dear Leo, you are the warm afternoon light leaning against the windows and the walls so beautifully that people can’t help but to stop and take you in. everything in this world is a backdrop to your glow and you know how important the backdrops are. there isn’t anything you wouldn’t do for friends as long as they appreciate you right back. your strength, to put it simply, is a light, even at its lowest, able to extinguish the darkest night.
Virgo: dear virgo, you are the beauty in the mess of everything this world seems to always pour and pour. there is always something more just out of reach you want to have and you will gladly pull up your sleeves to get it. sitting back and doing nothing is not your cup of tea. sometimes you feel like a whirlwind in people’s lives, a storm that comes and rearranged everything pleasing your earthly senses.
Libra: dear Libra, you are divinity in a bottle, the way everything has to be smooth and love or else you’ll cause hell to anyone who destroys your sense of peace. it takes a while for you to get angry because patience is something that comes naturally. it’s only when you’ve had enough that u give ur wrath, and fair enough, you deserve the best. the world can be messy and chaotic but, still, you see the art in it.
Scorpio: dear scorpio, beyond all the destruction and growth there is a reason for all this madness. you want to know exactly how strong something is. you pull it apart to see where the weakness is and make it stronger. the truth is sometimes you don’t believe in your own strength so you push yourself through hell only to realize you’ve been strong all along.
