All of these women are Jewish. Let’s not erase that.

I really don’t see why that matters

Look, it’s a lot like someone saying, “I don’t really see why it matters that these are women” to this photo set. Because on one hand, it doesn’t. Human accomplishment! Yay! But on the other hand it really does, because women face unique struggles in our society, and it would belittle these women’s accomplishments to not view them in their proper context.

It matters that Lamarr, Portman, and Bialik are Jewish, because their ethnic and religious identities inform who they are. It also matters because positive representation is important. American society generally distances “good” Jews (AKA the Jews that it wants to claim as its own for one reason or another) from their Jewishness/Judaism. Look at Albert Einstein for a perfect example of this. 

No one is claiming that all actress-scientists are Jewish, but the fact  remains that these particular three are, and that aspect of their identity should be included in our recognition/celebration of them.

Wendy Carlos

For people who might not know - Wendy Carlos is a trans woman who was deeply influential in early electronic music and hugely involved with the push to have synthesizers seen as real instruments.

Some of the movies Wendy Carlos did the soundtracks for, that you may know:

She has three Grammys, and a lifetime achievement award from the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States.

Oh and she also takes photos of eclipses that are so good Nasa uses them.
