Honestly when Moftiss talk about how they make a point to “have your cake and eat it too” in their scripts… that’s probably my favorite thing about their writing. I’ve come to appreciate it a lot more now that I watch Doctor Who, too. There’s just this great balance of over the top, almost absurd plot elements grounded by the characters reacting appropriately; it captures the strengths of fanfiction so perfectly and I love it for the same reasons.

TEH is probably the best example of it. I don’t even mean the fantasy versions of the fall; those definitely apply, but they’re fantasies so that allows some leeway. I’m talking about Sherlock riding a motorcycle down some stairs to save John and shit. That should have been totally stupid but they did it anyway.

There’s just a lot of joy in everything they write. Even the sad stuff.

Steven Moffat on the Impossible Girl (x)

Oh, it was. Frequently. The arc was about misdirection so it was easy to not take note of it, but it is very much the core of series 7. For example:

it’s genuinely obvious and brought up again and again and again.

  • The Bells of Saint John - the monks term it “his madness” in what is a disturbing set-up (hiding away just to think about her and paint her?)… and the entire arc is giving a nod when one of Clara’s first words to him is “Just Clara Oswald”
  • The Rings of Akhaten - Clara explains that she will only travel with the Doctor as herself and not the ghost of someone else
  • Hide - The Doctor’s quest for the truth ends in Emma telling him that “she’s a perfectly ordinary girl” and asking him whether that isn’t enough, while warning Clara away from the Doctor
  • Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS - The Doctor’s obsession with her identity is portrayed as scary, see above
  • Nightmare in Silver - The Doctor’s obsession with “The Impossible Girl” is potrayed as downright creepy

And it all culminates in The Name of the Doctor, where the Doctor doesn’t solve her mystery at all. Instead, Clara needs the knowledge about the echoes (”secrets keep us safe”… not) to figure out for herself what is happening and making a choice to save the Doctor.

I could link to at least a dozen posts which make the same point, it’s been the dominant lense of analysis of series 7 part 2 for years now. Because taking into account what is happening and making any normative judgement about the Doctor’s behaviour, the fact that he’s wrong isn’t a mystery.

Moffat says the Princess Bride is a story about storytelling. What does it tell us about storytelling? [x]

Well,

the movie is a story read to a young boy. At first all he wants is the adventures. The kidnapping the giants the pirates the murder. But at the end of the story, after he knows the characters and cares about them

then he doesn’t mind the kiss so much.

I do love how none of Moffat’s companions become soldiers or defenders of the Earth. It always bothered me that almost all of RTD’s companions ended up like that. But not so with Moffat’s. Rory remains a nurse, a job he has been passionate about from day one. Amy, in true Amy style, drifts for a bit before finally settling on a career as a writer. And Clara becomes a school teacher. For all the complaints that the anti-Moffat faction make about his companions being all special and unrelatable, his companions are the only ones of the modern era that are shown to have nice normal lives away from the Doctor. They’re not doing what they think the Doctor would expect them to do, they are doing what they want to do.

Friendly reminder that current show runner Steven Moffat and former show runner Russell T Davies are friends and worked together for years.

Friendly reminder that current show runner Steven Moffat and Big Finish Executive Producer Nick Briggs are friends, The name “Big Finish” even came from an episode of “Press Gang” which Moffat was co-writer on.

Friendly reminder that current show runner Steven Moffat brought back Paul McGann and that Paul was so grateful and called it his “Birthday present”

Friendly reminder that current show runner Steven Moffat had Colin back to narrate the behind the scenes feature for Day of the doctor

Friendly reminder that current show runner Steven Moffat was both in Peter Davison’s “The five(ish) Doctors” and was an executive producer on it

Now you can think what you want about Steven Moffat’s work but please stop trying to imply other people involved in Doctor Who dislike the man and keep badmouthing him because it’s simply not true.

Stop putting words in people’s mouth’s it’s uncool.

just so we’re clear  - moffatsays is posting fake moffat quotes, for some reason - they’re all bullshit and made up - so please don’t reblog any of them

Hahahahahah you would have to be very stupid to fall for that hahahahahhaha

that’s what I thought when i first saw the blog

but yesterday they posted a quote about River, and now it has almost 900 notes - so yeah, apparently a lot of people are that stupid.

People are still reposting that bullshit quote from the Scotsman so that doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.

I find it utterly bizarre how a huge part of tumblr culture is “I read it, therefore it is true.”

The thing about Amy only being involved with her job, the Doctor, Rory and River always leaves me angry and wondering if these people even understand life in general, because first of all, it's not like that - we've heard of Amy's interests in school, we've seen her with her friends, her neighbours and so on, and second, if the major focus of her world are the aforementioned people, that's pretty much how people are - the people you care most about are your best friends, your significant other

and your kid. That’s how it is for most people in real life. If I look at my mother, that’s what she cares most about - her sister, her best friends, dad, me and my brother, and - occasionally - her job and that’s completely okay, because these are the people/things you worry most about; the things that matter the most in your life. Everyone here is complaining and wanting ‘realistic’ and well-rounded characters. Well, here you are.

1973: The Doctor Who 10th Anniversary story "The Three Doctors" is released, and reveals time travel was invented by some guy named Omega who got himself trapped in a parallel universe made of antimatter. Bob Baker and Dave Martin massively retcon the series' history.
1983: The Doctor Who 20th Anniversary story "The Five Doctors" is released, and reveals the Doctor's mentor Borusa has been a bad guy this whole time and that Rassilon, one of the founders of Time Lord society, is actually immortal. Terrance Dicks massively retcons the series' history.
1988: The Doctor Who 25th Anniversary story "Remembrance of the Daleks" is released, and reveals that ever since the first serial the Doctor has been hiding in ancient super weapon on earth to use against the Daleks, and may or may not be one of the founders of Time Lord society. Ben Aaronivich massively retcons the series' history.
1993: The Doctor Who 30th Anniversary story "Dimensions in Time" is released, and reveals the Doctor Who universe and the EastEnders universe are one and the same. John Nathan-Turner massively retcons the series' history.
2003: The Doctor Who 40th Anniversary audio "Zagreus" is released and reveals all the novels actually happened in an alternate universe. Gary Russel and Alan Barnes massively retcon the series' history.
2013: The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary story "Day of the Doctor" is released and reveals that Gallifrey was not destroyed by the Doctor but in fact tucked away into an alternate dimension. Steven Moffat somehow becomes the first writer in Doctor Who history to massively retcon the series' history on an anniversary.

The “Anatomy of a Hit” event report and video from the talk with Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat, Sue Vertue, Amanda Abbington & Ben Stephenson that took place on 4 March 2014 is now available on the Royal Television Society website here [x].

Around 48 minutes in, Steven says beautiful things about fanfiction authors and fan artists - a “hugely positive thing”. At the end, referring to people who send death threats to Amanda and do crazy things like that - the bad apples of fandom - that “we can’t allow them to dominate the conversation, now can we.”

If I had been in the audience at that point, I believe I would have given him a standing ovation.

My bucket list includes hugging Steven Moffat. And then bursting into tears. He gets us.
