Lestrade is such a great guy though Sherlock wants to dig up a 150-year-old body and everyone’s like “Sherlock no that’s stupid” and poor, sweet Lestrade is just there like “Ok give me a shovel I’ll help” what a great friend I love Lestrade he deserves better

The thing I love most about this is that it wasn't even real Lestrade, it was mind palace Lestrade, meaning he is the best most loving & supportive friend and Sherlock fucking knows it and it shows up in his subconscious, Lestrade will always be there to help Sherlock no matter how ridiculous things get

“What’s in there?”

As others have already pointed out, the actor who played Archie in TSOT is credited as “Billy” in TAB. As we know, all the Billy/Williams in the show = Sherlock (first name William), so we can assume that ‘Billy’ represents the child version of Sherlock in his own mind. Which seems like a fairly deliberate move, and made me think of the first scene we see ‘Billy’ in. John is carrying a hat box, which from the case details we can infer probably has a body part of the ‘dismembered country squire’ inside of it, likely his head. ‘Billy’ ( Sherlock ) asks what’s inside the hat box, and John tells him “Never mind” in an Eyes Wide sort of Alarmed way that suggests that whatever is inside is not for kids.

We’re then later shown John putting the hat box down on what is normally the kitchen table inside of 221B.

Not to now tell you that it’s All About Sex, but that’s where I’m going with this. Allow me to explain: Sherlock sees himself as a child trying to get a peak at John’s package. Alternative phrasing: Sherlock tries to get a head from John. Ima try again: Sherlock is interested in the head John is carrying at waist level. No matter how I slice it, the subtext seems to read at the very least a bit sexual to me, even just from John’s reaction alone.

However! John stops Child Sherlock from looking, and acts like he shouldn’t look. If whatever is inside the hat box was gory, it seems strange that Sherlock’s mind would stop his Archie Child Self from looking, as we know Sherlock bonded with Archie specifically over their mutual love of gore. So, my interpretation: Sherlock can’t have a relationship with John unless he does some growing up, likely in the form of facing some things about himself. He is barring this from himself (as MP John is really him at the end of the day). This fits, as a lot of the rest of the episode is spent exploring Sherlock’s complicated relationship with the side of himself that Moriarty represents, which includes his (homo)sexuality.

This is simplistic and vague because anything else is too speculative, especially as I don’t know for sure what is in the hat box. For example, maybe there is a head in the hat box and it represents Sherlock’s head, and this is meant to say that John (his heart) is ruling his head, but he can’t know that just yet. Or, the actual contents of the hat box are the ‘Ghosts of His Past’ the shadows that define etc., such as a repressed memory that Sherlock has had since childhood, which he has since given to MP John for safe-keeping. It could also just be a Blow Job Joke as I said above, and Sherlock may still think of himself as a child (he’s called himself a baby as recently as TSOT), and in his mind, John won’t be with him sexually until John stops seeing him as a kid. It’s pretty sad if Sherlock actually thinks this, seeing as John is ready to go at any time lol However, either way, I very strongly suspect that whatever is inside the hat box, it is linked to Sherlock’s ability to enter a sexual relationship, as John places it safely where they eat (food = sex metaphor) in 221b (the physical representation of Sherlock’s heart and love for John).

Do you ever think about the fact that in TSoT we saw John in Sherlock’s mind palace so we know he exists there, and yet one episode later when Sherlock is shot and John is probably the single most qualified person Sherlock knows who could help in that situation, he’s nowhere to be found?

Do you ever think about the fact that that means Sherlock most likely actively decided to remove John from his mind palace after John got married and you just want to sort of curl up into a ball and maybe weep for a while?

Sherlock was running through his mind palace trying to find John in order to calm down, and Mary was there, blocking the way to John.

Mary was there, in a wedding dress, shooting Sherlock in the chest.

MARY WAS THERE, IN A WEDDING DRESS, SHOOTING SHERLOCK IN THE CHEST WHILE!! HOLDING!!! THE!!! GUN!! IN!! HER!! NON DOMINANT HAND!!! HER LEFT HAND!!! WEDDING RING CLEARLY VISIBLE!!!!

Mary, in a wedding dress, holding a gun in her left hand, wedding ring clearly visible, shooting Sherlock in the chest, and keeping Sherlock apart from John. Even in his mind palace, John is inaccessible to sherlock now. There’s someone in the way.

If that isn’t the most horrible fucking thing you’ve heard!!!

EVEN INSIDE SHERLOCK’S OWN FUCKING MIND, JOHN IS OFF LIMITS.

But he still restarts his heart for John

EVEN IF HE IS OFF LIMITS HE RESTARTS HIS HEART FOR HIM

This is true and a comfort I’m clinging to now!

"Oh, for God’s sake, Sherlock. It doesn’t matter about the gun. Don’t be stupid."

It’s difficult to tabulate a list of all the things I loved best about series 3, there are just so many of them, but close to the top has got to be the revelation of how hard Sherlock is on himself. So arrogant, but so self-loathing.

When I first saw this scene I was surprised that Mind Palace Moriarty listed Irene as one of the people who would cry over Sherlock’s death (I figured it would make more sense to include Molly in that slot).  However, after mulling it over, I concluded that there’s a deeper meaning to it.  When you consider who these people are to Sherlock or what they symbolically represent, this list has a pattern.

First, Jim mentions Mrs. Hudson.  Mrs. Hudson has always been like a surrogate mother to Sherlock and, up until S3, she was the only mother figure in Sherlock’s life that we knew about.  So you could say that Mrs. Hudson is symbolic of parental love and affection.  Next on Jim’s list are Sherlock’s actual parents; they are the literal representation of parental love.

Then, the camera angle changes—this change further emphasizes how everyone is paired off (Mrs. Hudson/Sherlock’s parents, Irene/John)—and Jim lists Irene who, as many others have pointed out, is often the symbolic representation of romantic love and sex.  So, if we continue the pattern of symbolic love followed by literal love, what does John represent?

Folks, everything that I’ve been reading about memory palace construction and Sherlock’s Method of loci is telling me that this padded psych ward cell isn’t a mind-fabrication; it’s an actual place he’s been, somewhere in his past.

"First, mind palaces do exist. People have them. I can’t because I’m not clever enough, but clever people can have them.
You construct it out of spaces you’ve actually been in. You start in a house you live in and you put things in it and then you maybe join it to a theater you know well or something.
So you’ve got a map in your head of places with which you’re familiar. The look of his mind palace would be conditioned by where Sherlock had been.”
