Just over 1200 words added today, and another scene complete on this next chapter of TUA. I’d say we’re getting towards halfway done :D

Kiiiinda want to post a sneak peak of the scene I was just working on, because I love it so much, but I also don’t want to spoil too much… Maybe this snippet from Pride and Prejudice (courtesy of Project Gutenberb) will suffice as a hint:

“You are considering how insupportable it would be to pass many evenings in this manner—in such society; and indeed I am quite of your opinion. I was never more annoyed! The insipidity, and yet the noise—the nothingness, and yet the self-importance of all those people! What would I give to hear your strictures on them!”
“Your conjecture is totally wrong, I assure you. My mind was more agreeably engaged. I have been meditating on the very great pleasure which a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman can bestow.”
Miss Bingley immediately fixed her eyes on his face, and desired he would tell her what lady had the credit of inspiring such reflections. Mr. Darcy replied with great intrepidity:
“Miss Elizabeth Bennet.”

#WIP Wednesday

Here’s a little snippet from the next chapter of @sheliesshattered & my Pride & Prejudice au Hobbit fic, Truth Universally Acknowledged to prove we really are still working on this for this #WIPWednesday.

The pieces now all back in their starting positions, Dwalin gives him the first move, and Fíli opens the game with an aggressive strategy – probably too aggressive, if the ever-so-slightly quirked brow on Dwalin’s otherwise stoic face is anything to go by. “Has Nori turned up anything of note about Mister Baggins?” he asks, and Dwalin looks up from the board as he moves one of his pieces to a deceptively defensive position to pin Fíli with a blank, stonewalling look. “Before now, I mean?”
“Not that he’s mentioned,” the Kingsguard responds.
“I assume he’s looked into him at least a little,” Fíli goes on, “since he is, er, Tauriel’s friend, after all.”
Dwalin hums, apparently more interested in contemplating his next move than in answering Fíli’s questions. “His mother’s friend, actually,” he says after a moment.
Fíli blinks across at him. “Pardon?”
“The lass was originally friends with Baggins’ mother. Invited her back to the Shire some ten years back, practically adopted her. She and the Baggins lad have been thick as thieves ever since, or so the locals apparently say.”
“Oh.” Fíli frowns down at the board and takes his turn. “That’s… That’s very interesting.”
Dwalin harrumphs. “That’s one word for it.”

Consider the intersection of the myth idea that it's *eye contact* with Medusa that turns one into stone, the difficulty many neurodivergent people have making eye contact especially with strangers, and how such neurodivergence might contribute to a person being considered 'odd'. so apparently when my sister and i were little we took golfing classes and we got kicked out after a week. the reason being that the old white male instructor kept calling my 4 year old sister Maria “Mary” after she told him several times that her name is pronounced Maria. anyway, at one point, he tells her “well, that doesn’t matter anymore. you’re in America now.” and that distressed my sister so much that she hit him with her golf club.

that’s not what did the damage, though. what fucked that old dude up is that i saw my sister hit him from where i was standing and i ran over and started beating him with MY golf club. my mom says that i didn’t know what the hell was happening, but i squared up.

that’s why we got kicked out.

To be fair I would too.

‘The elf in the room’ is the literal translation of a Dwarven phrase that refers to an issue of which all present are acutely aware, yet that no one wishes to directly address or even acknowledge, usually because it comes with a certain element of awkwardness or impropriety that may be exacerbated through the discussion of such. Common usage is, notably, entirely metaphorical, and does not refer to a literal elf surrounded by dwarves in a small, enclosed space.

Bilbo finds Netherfield in a state of utter chaos by hobbit standards: the front room furnishings caked with mud scraped from the dwarves’ heavy steel-toed boots, the hallways and closets he passes stuffed full of weapons and furs and armor, almost as if they expect an attack at any moment.

We have begun to contemplate our origins: starstuff pondering the stars; organized assemblages of ten billion billion billion atoms considering the evolution of atoms; tracing the long journey by which, here at least, consciousness arose. –Carl Sagan

The December Calendar, December 19th, 2016: the nautilus, the golden ratio

Look at any randomly selected piece of your world. Encoded deep in the biology of every cell in every blade of grass, in every insect’s wing, in every bacterium cell, is the history of the third planet from the Sun in a Solar System making its way lethargically around a galaxy called the Milky Way. Its shape, form, function, colour, smell, taste, molecular structure, arrangement of atoms, sequence of bases, and possibilities for the future are all absolutely unique. There is nowhere else in the observable Universe where you will see precisely that little clump of emergent, living complexity. It is wonderful.

Light is the only connection we have with the Universe beyond our solar system, and the only connection our ancestors had with anything beyond Earth. Follow the light and we can journey from the confines of our planet to other worlds that orbit the Sun without ever dreaming of spacecraft. To look up is to look back in time, because the ancient beams of light are messengers from the Universe’s distant past. –Brian Cox

The December Calendar, December 9th, 2016: Neptune

Recognize that the very molecules that make up your body, the atoms that construct the molecules, are traceable to the crucibles that were once the centers of high mass stars that exploded their chemically rich guts into the galaxy, enriching pristine gas clouds with the chemistry of life. So that we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically and to the rest of the universe atomically. That’s kinda cool! That makes me smile and I actually feel quite large at the end of that. It’s not that we are better than the universe, we are part of the universe. We are in the universe and the universe is in us. –Neil deGrasse Tyson
