Out of all the cool stuff that mythbusters ever shot on high speed camera, shooting a soccer ball at 60mph out of a truck traveling 60mph is one of my favorites

Just look at it. It is the most perfect visual representation of Newton’s 2nd law of physics I’ve ever seen. The ball, which was shot out of a CANNON, drops straight down. Two equal and opposite velocities completely canceling each other out, leaving the soccer ball to drop to the earth with a net velocity of 0. Sir issac newton would be proud to tears of this gif.

And yet this “myth” is nothing more than basic physics at work. A 10 year old with an interest in science could have told us this is possible. 60mph in one direction minus 60mph the exact opposite direction is 0. Basic.

But what makes this so frieken cool is the fact that they went through all the trouble to actually demonstrate the invisible laws that govern the way our universe works. To get this shot both the soccer ball and the truck had to be moving at the exact same speed. Real world variables make that extremely difficult to pull off. It took them hundreds of attempts to get it right. They went through all that trouble to “prove” something we have known as fact for hundreds of years. And we get this amazing gif to watch as a result.

Mythbusters is incredible. Science is incredible. And the fact that this experiment in physics can be used in science classes for years and years to come to help children learn about physics is incredible.

thank god for the mythbusters though because it used to be that whenever i knew i had insomnia i’d just kind of accept it and stay up doing whatever until my morning classes and spend the day feeling like shit

but then they did an episode where they established that even just fucking laying there for a half hour, not even sleeping just laying there and not even for an hour, makes a significant difference and you’ll feel way better

it has made a huge difference in my life to know that it’s okay if i can’t fall asleep, it takes a lot of the pressure off and ironically helps me fall asleep better

…i did not know this, thank you

If anyone wants to look it up, the episode was specifically the Deadliest Catch crossover ep, and the myth was that it’s better/safer when working a 30 hour shift to take a 20 minute nap every six hours rather than try to power through. They did an obstacle course test, one without naps and one with, and even though they couldn’t even sleep half the time the naps resulted in their scores doubling.

So actually I undersold it, even if it’s 7:40 and your alarm goes off at 8 just lie down and shut your eyes and it will still be better than nothing

bless you i wish i had known this in college, but oh well

What is the truth???

so how am i supposed to sit damnit!

The truth is that you’re most likely gonna die however you sit so just relax and enjoy the descent to your untimely demise.

The brace position actually does save lives and reduces injuries.

It saves lives by putting your head already against the thing it’s most likely to hit in an impact, namely the seat in front. This reduces your chance of a head injury. If you can’t get your head against the seat, or are in an exit row, then the modified brace position secures your head against your legs.

It reduces injuries by tucking your limbs in and holding them in place, meaning they don’t move during the impact, meaning they’re less likely to be broken.

And, ya know, if you are conscious and don’t have a broken leg, you have a much higher chance of evacuating safely from a plane that is, say, on fire, or sinking into a river…

Numerous reports indicate that bracing maximizes your chance of surviving uninjured in a survivable crash - and over 70% of crashes are survivable.

Mythbusters busted this by putting a dummy through a series of simulated plane crashes, and they discovered that the brace position absorbs more of the crash energy than sitting upright, and that the force was channeled into the chair.

So, why do flight attendants sit in a different position? Because jumpseats are not designed the same way as passenger seats.

First of all, some jumpseats are rear facing. On some planes, some passenger seats are rear facing. If you are in a rear facing seat, then you should not brace, you should sit upright and press yourself into the seat, legs together.

Second of all, flight attendants often wear shoulder harnesses, so their shoulders are secured to the seat. They do not, however, put their legs against anything, they tuck their legs under the seat. Sometimes they sit on their hands, sometimes they put their hands firmly on their thighs - this is, again, to minimize limb movement.

So, this is bullshit. If you are on a plane and the cabin crew yell Brace, BRACE. It might save your life.

When someone gives you safety instructions, FUCKING LISTEN.  Don’t try to think you’re smarter than them because you read a conspiracy theory on the internet.

Also, as an aside, nearly every disaster will leave your teeth in tact. It’s incredibly difficult to destroy the human teeth, they’re some of the strongest bones in our bodies and the only method I know of completely destroying them is either dissolving them in acid or completely carbonizing the entire human they’re attached to.

@tozettewrites I think this is relevant to your interests?

‘Tis! This is literally what’s happening every time I tell somebody I’m going to lay around doing breathing exercises in the dark for the rest of the night even though I haven’t been able to sleep and I know I probably won’t sleep.

Sometimes I’m that person who stays up and does whatever because well what even ever ugh I’m so fucking tired and bored! but most of the time it certainly does help to do The Resting Thing even if I don’t sleep. So you can have some anecdata to go with your actual evidence. :)
