here’s the deal: thorin is barely an adult when erebor is lost to smaug. then his crazy grandfather leads them all on a suicide mission to moria, where thorin loses his grandfather and father in one battle. then suddenly this poor child has to be a KING? and he doesn’t even have a kingdom, yet somehow he manages to keep his people together and build a new home for them somewhere else? what i am getting at here is that thorin HAS A LOT ON HIS SHOULDERS and is so burdened by duty and obligation that there is nothing left for himself. he kept NOTHING for himself, “everything i did i did for THEM,” he literally says this.

then he meets bilbo baggins, and has NO obligation to even like him, but it turns out that bilbo is JUST THE SORT OF PERSON that thorin would and could and DOES fall in love with, and he finally lets himself have something - a relationship with someone that benefits thorin AS A PERSON, as a living being. call it a deep platonic friendship or a romance, it really doesn’t fucking matter. bilbo is not a dwarf, he’s not one of thorin’s people, and erebor is not his home - but thorin loves him anyway because of WHO BILBO IS and the light and happiness that he brings to thorin’s life. this is literally just me saying what happens in the films??? he literally comes out of the dragon sickness because bilbo has been carrying around an acorn and bilbo’s love and longing for his own home mirrors thorin’s?? bilbo is his soulmate for fuck’s sake. that’s literally what the films showed us.

Okay sorry but the real Thorin, the real Thorin, he’s the Thorin who drops his weapons and motions for his kin to follow in order to save Bilbo’s limbs from the trolls. Thorin who would suffer the uncertainty (and the indignity) of being captured, being trussed up in a sack, and his companions put on a rotating spit - all because he couldn’t let the trolls rip Bilbo apart.

Now I’m not saying this is an especially Bagginshield moment, I’m saying this is a reflection of the soul Thorin has. He would sacrifice himself, his own kin and family, rather than give an order that would bring about definite harm to another.

Really, whether this is a flaw in his character or not is up to you to decide, but Thorin weighs life as invaluable.

All of which makes dragonsick!Thorin all the more painful. Thorin who would see his family’s life paid in return for gold, who’d throw Bilbo from the ramparts, who would choose to put his friends and family at almost certain death - not to save a life, but to hoard some gold.

That’s not Thorin. That’s the sort of dwarf Thorin fears becoming - and that’s the real tragedy to the dragonsickness. It turns him into his worst nightmare, and makes him the complete opposite to how he actually is.

“I’ll bring you home, little brother…”

So The Abominable Bride had a lot of brotherly feels and inspired me to draw this series - 3 times Mycroft carried Sherlock, I might call it? I indulged in cuteness, angst, and some punk in between! Was gonna pair each scene with a ficlet, to sorta explain my derived headcanons, but I’ll just leave the visual details to your own imaginings!

I can’t help but imagine a Thorin that had always wanted to be a dad. Except well. He had like zero interest in female dwarves–females of any race really–so he knew from very early on that it was simply not an option for him.

So he settles for being an uncle to Fili and Kili and then being a father-figure to Fili and Kili and then watching Fili and Kili grow up to be their own people.

Bilbo having never talked to him about those kinds of things and being so nervous to ask Thorin how he feels about bringing Frodo into their home. Thorin getting that look on his face. First a spark of hope, tamped down into thinly veiled nerves and awkward reassurance..

Just. Whatever you do don’t imagine Thorin fucking Oakenshield’s face when he finds out that he’s essentially going to get to be someone’s father.

Don’t do it. It will end you.

Parentshield makes me giddy. But Thorin playing with Fili and Kili's kids just destroys me (grandparentshield) He would spoil them so much, and probably steal them away to see Bilbo who would always have treats for them. and I know that the tiny ones would inspire Thorin's pranks again, so he would enlist them to help him hide Fili's knives. Or slowly move the furniture so Kili keeps tripping and act innocent after, and just be giggling in the next room with adorable dwarflings in his lap.

This is such a beautiful moment. Remember that this is the same John who wrote that blog entry after having watched the dvd Lestrade brought over where he says that Sherlock struggled to fit in, that he knew Sherlock hadn’t come to that birthday dinner for reasons of social anxiety rather than actual busyness. The fact that he asked Sherlock to be his best man, knowing that it would involve making a big speech and acting “normally” and all of that, was a huge act of trust on his part: trust in Sherlock’s ability and willingness to do that, for him. I’m so glad that he gave Sherlock the reassurance he so desperately needed right here. It’s just so naked and afraid: “John? Did I do it wrong?” We know from the scene with Lestrade that this is the “hardest thing (he’s) ever had to do” (which I take to mean a lot more than just making the speech!), and here he is, doing it and wondering if he fucked the whole thing up for John. But he didn’t, and I’m glad John told him, both with his words and his arms.
