this is why I love this joke:

Jesus was fond of telling his followers not to worry about how they’d afford food tomorrow because God would provide. But Jesus told them this while handing out free bread and encouraging them to help people who were in need, making them the outlet through which God would provide for others

My mother was a waitress, we live in an area that has a lot of Christians and people would often stiff her on tips. Instead they’d leave a pamphlet with quotes from Jesus saying not to worry because God would provide

Jesus’ message was never that God would magically put food on people’s tables. God would provide opportunities to help each other, like the boat captains offering to help the dying man. That only works if people actually help each other

When I first heard this joke as a teenager I laughed at the guy who didn’t take the help that was offered to him. As an adult, I think of all the Christian politicians who vote against food stamps and I want to tell them “You were the boat captain but you steered away from the man in need instead of offering him help. Is that really what God wanted you to do?”

Using the term “Judeo-Christian” is the same as insisting on referring to two divorced people as a couple don’t @ me

Except that one spent centuries trying to brutally murder the other, now acts like they want to reconcile in public, but secretly work to replace the other with a clone of themself. And the other one just wants to be left alone to read large books and eat good food and play with the cat.

this is an important addition

Oh they’re going to need salvation.

Not just making it illegal, but making being gay punishable with death.

This is one of the many reasons why I walk by every single red bucket in the run-up to Christmas. They’re not getting my money, I don’t care how nice the people ringing bells are.

Ever since the time they threatened to close all their soup kitchens in NYC if a law that did something as simple as allow companies to extend spousal benefits to their employee’s same-sex domestic partners I have refused to buy from them or donate to them.

It’s that time of year again! In case people don’t know… the Salvation Army is shitty peoples.

Also, the married women are not paid (and therefore can’t qualify for assistance if they should ever divorce, etc). And worth “of course” less than a man.

“ In the Army’s case, the agreement for compensation is that the officer allowance be paid jointly to the husband—the check is written in his name. Officially, the wife is a “worker without expectation of remuneration,” and her husband receives 40 percent more of an allowance as a married man than he would as a single man. “

hey since that season is coming up again!

(&:) Be sure and wish every bell-ringer in your neighborhood a Merry Kiss My Ass this holiday season~! :D

Be nice to the bell ringers, they most likely have no idea about this.  If you really want to do something to the bell ringers, try talking to them about this and ask them if they know.

And shop at Target because they don’t allow the Salvation Army there.

Reblogging for the last comment especially.  The Salvation Army is shitty but it’s been an institution for a very long time, and a lot of regular folk have no idea about these things.  They just want to help the poor and think this is a good way to do it.

We can fight an institution without being dicks to people who genuinely mean well.

an arts n crafts superstore chain has been illegally smuggling ancient biblical relics LIKE THIS

out of the UAE, in falsely labelled packages delivered to some hobby lobby stores in oklahoma.

So hobby lobby indirectly funded Daesh??

Considering its militant Christian leadership, wouldn’t be surprised.

😳

I feel like the point that gets missed in a lot of this dialogue is that they were buying these antiquities for their ongoing side project, which is a bible museum.

It doesn’t change the underlying wrong doing, but it adds an extra weird twist in which a “Christian” for-profit company probably smuggled looted antiquities that they were warned were probably looted and decided it didn’t matter if they were paying money directly or indirectly to ISIS and other terror groups because it was important that they have these items for their soon-to-open passion project in building a money-making shrine a Bible museum.

Now, in general, the Bible, like many religious texts, has had a huge impact on history and there are plenty of non-religious people who devote their lives to studying parts or all of the text or its impact. The idea of a private Bible museum isn’t inherently stranger or more worrisome than lots of other museums out there.

That said, this museum is inherently being built with a Christian focus (again, this isn’t necessarily a worrisome thing. It’s a private organization and they can push whatever message they want), but part of the goals of the Museum are to build a high school Bible curriculum. They want this to be made for “markets around the world” and it’s currently being developed with teams in the US and Israel. They boast that it’s already being piloted in public and “at risk” schools in the US.

So, to summarize, you have a private, for-profit company knowingly funneling money into questionable hands (at best) or terrorist groups (at worst), abetting the looting of priceless artifacts from countries that have been pillaged by western powers for decades, for the purpose of building a museum with the goal to increase knowledge and engagement with Christian ideas and the Bible both inside and outside the walls of the museum itself.

What would Jesus do? Idk, man, but “Fund some terrorists and illegally acquire to help fill the shelves at a new museum with $500 million in assets to help show off how great Christianity is while supporting a Presidential candidate (now President) who is actively against helping those who are harmed by western interference and terrorism in those countries” doesn’t seem like the clear translation of directions like “cast off all your possessions and follow me” or “care for your sick, your orphans, your widows, and aliens, because whatever you do to the least of these you do to me.”

Best thing about Colbert is that when he nails it, he nails it.

I feel like Colbert is one of the best examples of religious you can ever get. He’s Catholic. He’s one of 11 kids. He teaches SUNDAY SCHOOL. And it never comes off like he’s judging you because you don’t follow his exact path.

I’m an atheist, and I feel like Colbert gets me in a lot of ways. It means a lot.

  • The Nassau County Police Department is investigating a possible hate crime where an unidentified person left a large painting of Jesus hanging on a cross outside the Hillside Islamic Center in Long Island, New York.
  • An employee at the Hillside Islamic Center found the painting hanging from the mosque’s fence Friday, an NCPD spokesman said in an email.
  • Abdul Aziz Bhuyian, the mosque’s president, told Island Now that surveillance footage shows a man riding a bicycle to the center and pulling a shopping cart with the painting just after midnight on Friday.
  • Bhuyian said he is sure the man “wanted to provoke” members of the mosque. “Had he had good intentions, he would have come to us,” Bhuyian said, according to Island Now. “We’re always here.” Read more (7/11/17)

  • On Saturday morning, Isabella Red Cloud, a transgender woman, drove with a friend to Union Gospel Mission in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, hoping to get some breakfast.
  • She says was refused service because she was wearing a dress. She fired up Facebook Live and recorded her being kicked off the premises.
  • The video, viewed over 13,000 times, shows an unnamed employee escorting Red Cloud out the building’s entrance.
  • When she asks the employee on camera if she’s being asked to leave because of her dress, he seems to answer affirmatively.
  • The employee repeatedly tells Red Cloud she’s “trespassing.”
  • Red Cloud told KDLT, “I cried, I contemplated suicide, I felt sad, I felt weak.” However, she returned the next day to attend church service.
  • Red Cloud was once again told she could not be on the church’s property. A friend documented the second incident on Facebook Live.
  • Union Gospel Mission director Fran Stenberg told the Argus Leader that Red Cloud’s case is not exceptional: She’s asked trans people to leave for wearing dresses on multiple occasions. Read more (4/25/17)
