“You doubted me,” Bilbo crowed, clinging fiercely to his fishing pole as the line spooled out.

“Never.” Thorin’s words were sincere, but his face still hid a smile, as though he knew something the hobbit did not.

“Best trout fisher in Hobbiton, two years running.” Bilbo tried to catch his reel, but it continued to spin like a wild gyroscope. He did not quite have the hang of dwarven fishing rods, nor did he see what was wrong with a good old fashioned pole-and-line. “I make all of my own lures, you know.”

“I know,” Thorin said. “This one seems most efficacious.”

“Yes. Yes quite.” Struggling to catch the line, Bilbo kept banging his fingers on the spinning reel. Suddenly it went taut. There was no more line left on the spool. Bilbo’s feet lifted from the wooden planks beneath him.

Fortunately, strong dwarven arms caught his middle at the exact same moment. “I only said the fish of Long Lake might be larger than those you are accustomed to,” Thorin murmured in his ear.

After a moment to consider whether or not his pride was worth a dunking, Bilbo allowed Thorin to help him land his catch.

Well, it's Ficback Friday, and you all know what that means! This week, I'm recommending 'Wide Awake and Sleeping' by pretzelduck. At just 3111 words, it's a rather small morsel, but for its size, it packs in an amazing amount of angsty pining, humour, and of course, fluffy romance (because it has a happy ending, naturally!). I adore the oblivious idiots trope, I love Bilbo remaining in Erebor (although reShirement is lovely, too), and I love Thorin’s lack of sense direction, and this story has all of that. It's sweet and cute, and perfect bite-size for a busy weekend. 😉

Rating: Teen And Up

Fandom: The Hobbit

Pairing: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield

Summary: "Bilbo had been told multiple times that Thorin’s sense of direction was perfect underground. He didn’t understand how that could possibly be true when Thorin kept accidentally ending up in his bed."

Thilbo Bagginshield AU headcanon:

Bilbo has simple tastes and doesn’t care for being adorned with heavy extravagant jewelry of a royal Erebor dwarf, despite his being Thorin’s consort.  Thorin respects this, but still feels like Bilbo deserves something to show how he is part of Erebor. He acknowledges Bilbo’s love for nature and the Shire, and goes down to the forges himself to make Bilbo his own little gold crown of flowers. Thorin’s work is so meticulous that despite being made of gold, the flowers look alive and delicate.
