Studies show that approaching youth with a bystander-intervention model is actually a lot more effective for reducing sexual assault, and it is also more enthusiastically received than programs that bill themselves as anti-rape.
We can tell youth that they are basically “rapists waiting to happen” (anti-rape initiative), or we can tell them that we know they would intervene if they saw harm happening to someone and we want to help empower them to do that (bystander intervention). The kids jump in with both feet for the latter! It was amazing to see children (and young boys in particular) excited to do this work and engage their creativity with it. Also, studies show that not only do they go on to intervene, but they also do not go on to sexually assault people themselves. Bystander intervention also takes the onus off the person being targeted to deter rape and empowers the collective to do something about it. It answers the question in the room when giggling boys are carrying an unconscious young woman up the stairs at a house party, and people are not sure how to respond and are waiting for “someone” to say or do something.

This is also, btw, how the US drastically reduced drunk driving in the US. Telling people they shouldn’t drive when intoxicated made absolutely zero difference. A slogan-and-ad-campaign for “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk!” changed drinking culture. Going after the bystanders is quite often the most effective thing to do in any social change.
I don’t usually say things like this, but:

Now THATS what I call character development
it's the fact that she "always wanted to" that really does it for me. proud of you, ma'am.
Lactose: e-excuse me...
Stomach: hey, what do we have here? Some goddamned lactose!
Small intestine: we don't like lactose here, ya know? You're gatecrashing a very private party!
Large intestine: (pushes him, making him stumble) there's two ways you can leave here... The easy way, or the hard way. What's it gonna be?
Lactose: but I...
Lactase: (deep voice) step back, everyone. (walks up and puts his arm around lactose's shoulders) he's with *me*
Large intestine: lactase?!
Small intestine: b-but you're both...
Lactase: I *said* he's with me. You got a problem with that?
Stomach: (finishes sizing him up) right. Course not. It's cool, lactose. Just don't cause any *problems*, you hear?
Lactose: I-I w-
Lactase: you don't have to answer that, babe. Just keep walking
nobody fucking appreciates me
I appreciate the fact that later in the evening, lactase is gonna grab the entire length of lactose’s structure with its active site and then break lactose in half.
Oh come on, like little milk sugar boy doesn't love getting his back blown out from time to time.

Look, white people in general are not phased by accusations of racism anymore. You accuse them of being racist they'd say stuffs like "of course, we are racist, you people are not as civilised. Look at how you live" etc etc
So don't hold back on calling them racist, bigots...they don't care and most of the time they admit it outright that not all humans are equal
The same thing goes for every other racists of color do not get it twisted
I wonder if Taylor swift or Ariana grande or bts or the Voltron creators ever just think DAMN these ppl are annoying abt their fans. Do you think that’s why klance never became canon
great new tumblr glitch where all ads are now replaced with "snoop dogg just invented coinstar for cheese"

I'm not sure that people who aren't in academia know how disruptive the loss of Internet Archive is for us.
I've been working on a big project all week, and suddenly losing access to the dozens of out-of-print and out of date radio astronomy books that my library doesn't have has thrown a massive wrench in the works. A lot of them are pretty hard to pirate, too! Most of what the IA has and does is stuff that most people will never have a reason to seek and nobody has a financial incentive to store, and that's precisely why it's so valuable.
Why did you blaze a post promoting the idea that food addiction is a thing. I’m coming to your house and killing you
I’m starting to think general people’s definition of “addiction” is largely vibes based and also largely based on the christian concept of sin, perhaps.
A manatee rescue that I follow responded to a call about a female manatee with two calves because one of her babies had been injured by a boat strike. The entire family was temporarily relocated from the wild into a wildlife rehab facility for the injured male calf to undergo treatment. While there, vets noted the female calf was significantly larger than the little injured male. They did genetic testing and determined that big sister calf actually wasn’t related to the other two manatees at all! She was in fact an orphan calf that the adult manatee had found and taken in to care for right alongside her own little one.
Wild to think this manatee calf was literally adopted and nobody would have ever known if it weren’t for random coincidence and human curiosity. Every animal that you cross paths with in life has a fascinating personal story that you’ll only ever catch a glimpse of (if you’re lucky).

Just today I got to see a chess book that I remember reading as a little kid. While it didn't give me a lifelong passion for chess, it did give me a lifelong passion for fantasy for its artwork.
The book is "Chess for Young Beginners" from 1975, and here's some of the artwork:
Like, this artwork goes hard. I especially appreciate the colour scheme for the black pieces, with its browns, bronzes, reds and oranges.
This artwork is amazing, evocative, exciting and dramatic. I recommend giving it a look if you have a chance - you can probably scrounge up a PDF of this thing with a bit of searching.
