“Maya Angelou represents that part of ourselves that can take any experience and transform it into creative fuel.“
● EMPOWERING QUOTES BY POWERFUL WOMEN OF LITERATURE ●
Young Ursula K Le Guin, from the documentary film by Arwen Curry ‘The Worlds of Ursula K Le Guin’ (2018)
Writers tear themselves down to stay modest and realistic (or because we lack confidence, I forget which sometimes). We get carried away with ourselves and our worlds, and so, need our bubbles burst to remember why we sit down to translate thought into words.
It’s a dangerous seesaw. The highs and lows of both hating and loving your work and yourself are probably why so many bipolar authors like me do what we do. We’re drawn to an art that panders to our nature. It calls to us. It can aid us and destroy us all at once.
But then you save us.
Whenever things hit bottom someone offers praise and we get up again. I can handle anything in life, thanks to my past. That doesn’t mean I don't feel it when things go down. It’s been raining a bit lately. Life is always living. Then someone poked their head through the clouds and called my work: prolific.
There is no greater compliment.
None.
I love learning both sides of an argument. We all have our own unique experiences and I appreciate that. Unfortunately my most recent experiences in the publishing world prove that this industry is as sexist as some people think. But not always on purpose.
I did a large job for a male editor=cool, I don’t need the credit. It’s an honor just to be working, right?
But oh, guess who still hasn’t paid me...
Because I was nice
Because I offered to “help out”
Because I am a woman
So here we go. Wage gap talk. Ladies, never offer to “help” a man do his own job. If he can’t do it, he should be fired for his shitty work ethic and you should be hired in his place. No excuses.
Do I think the man who took advantage of me meant to? Not directly. But he still did.
Woman take less money instead of negotiating for more because we’re “nice.” We offer to help out because we care about our jobs more than money. We get less in return because we give too much.
Stop “being nice.” Sure, work hard and be pleasant to those who value you. Continue being kind, but don’t fall for an editor’s compliments. Say no when he piles HIS WORK on your desk. Say no until he pays you what you’re worth.
This is why successful women are bitches. Because successful men are assholes.
Don’t get taken advantage of.
You never know the true effects of an injury until winter comes. The cold squeezes out all the little hidden kinks.
The accident that messed up my hand for weeks back in September has left me with residual pains. Like everything in my life it has left me with 2 choices: I can whine and cry and waste time lamenting what I lost, or I can drink some tea, wince when things get unbearable, and push through my writing.
I’ve got the tea

It’s release day!
I can think of no greater way to celebrate Ostara/the 1st day of spring than by sharing a world of diverse women’s writing.
We’re all set for this awesome compilation to be released next week!
