My main characters are constantly taking me down unexpected turns. Instead of fighting them and straining myself, I do what you do in life, lean with them.
Plotting is important to a degree. It fills in holes before they form and offers a compass. The direction is more sure. But the art will dictate when to explore unknown concepts.
