Bassist!Eskel ..... from my favorite headcanon (Rock/Metal Band AU)
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii eskel
my thots about twn eskel are:
- the scar is nice and yeah it's book accurate in shape. I would have loved a half your face gone horrific scar but intense facial scarring would have been hellish for the actor. have we learned nothing from anyas prosthetics in s1?
- his look overall is nice... manbun... kinda weaselly, greasy... just nice to look at. literally not a twink
- thue really does not look that different from basil idk they are both just blond european dudes to me what is the difference
- those .2 seconds of one line of dialogue say nothing about his overall personality and in the books he does initially come off as intimidating to ciri
- that .2 seconds of geralt hugging Lambert say nothing about his relationship with eskel PLUS he also hugs coen are we just forgetting coen don't tell me we are ignoring coen
- the eskel that exists in fanon does not exist in the books or even in the games. I do like him big and soft and ugly but he is a fandom collective imagining. he could never be recreated in any sense that would make anyone happy because he doesn't exist.
- I keep collecting greasy creaturey men babes help its so slippery
Well said Limey
Two corrections: fanon version of Eskel, while incredibly detailed, is heavily inspired by what we know of him through Triss' POV in Blood of Elves.
And he intimidated Ciri by looks alone, only to make her feel safe with his behaviour. This is not what we were shown in the trailer. 🤷♀️
I'm willing to wait till we see more of him, but so far it's not the interpretation I was hoping for.
I would disagree with both those corrections, the fanon version of Eskel is largely inspired by the game version, not the book version. Most of his personality and character tropes (the monsterfucking, the goat, the deep bond with Geralt, etc) and looks comes from the games and in a lot of cases appearance wise, there's been a collective fanon shift toward depicting Eskel as softer and bigger than he is in the games with Geralt usually much twiggier than him. His game scars are more extensive than the books and I have seen edits of show Eskel with his game scars so is clear what people are attached to. None of that is BAD, I mean, I like it, it's just heavily game-influenced fanon and the books have much broader pool of possibilities to draw from because he is such a minor character who does not do much. His most influential scene is that moment with Ciri and the one later where he kisses Triss' hand.
In the books, he very much also initially intimidates her with his behavior. He approaches alone in a darkened corridor, tells her the rats will eat her if she doesn't hurry up, rips back her her hood, says "a girl. That's all we need." Almost immediately after that, Ciri realizes that he's actually smiling and he is then welcoming and he proceeds to be the most socially conscious and respectable of the Witchers. But that isn't his initial intro.
As it is, we have seen a singular moment of him on screen and there is no way of knowing what happened before or after. He may immediately smile at her and assuage her fears. We can't know, it's two seconds. That may not have even been their first meeting, as in the books Eskel is the only one who comes to greet them outside the keep and then brings them in to meet the others.
Even if his personality has been shifted... so has Geralt's. So has Ciri's, to an extent. The Netflix version is better treated as its own separate Canon.
Fascinating takes. Honestly the greatest gift that reading DC/Marvel comics for years has given me - cursed as they may be - is the ability to take multiple, often contradictory canons completely in stride, and cheerfully pluck or ignore or remix whatever details I like best across mediums, because that's exactly what the "official" creators are doing all the time anyway. It's obliterated my stress levels in regards to adaptations.
And I love to draw large, soft Eskel, but omg "greasy creaturey men" yes!!!! Hell yes I will draw a pointy long haired coyote-to-Geralt's-wolf Eskel just as fast.
I personally do like Kaer Morhen and the Boyz to look as spooky and grimdark as possible though, precisely because it's such a visual stereotype and makes their actual relationships, interiority, and capacity for love that much more subversive. Same reason I love the Addams Family.
My half of the Eskel bang collaboration with the incomparable @jennyloggins, whose full fic can be read here!
They were a pleasure to work with, and you can never have too many bathing Eskels, especially as a parallel to all the highs and lows the Path has to offer.

This was a ton of fun!
Eskel progress for y’all!
I’ve handstitched the leather-blend straps down using a leather tool for guidance to achieve consistent stitch lengths. Unfortunately the recycled leather-blend fabric is such that I can’t punch through it, meaning that took longer than expected.
Next up I’ll guage width for the strips, pin, then press the studs on- if the same happens trying to pierce the material I’ll have to take a knife point to it and mark out four holes for each. If that doesn’t work, I’ll be drilling holes and riveting. Hahaaa.
Then I’ve bought a large piece of scrap leather for his spiked shoulder caps. They need foam inside, then dyeing, weathering and drilling through before I screw the studs in- which need spraying and weathering down. I’ve got the sleeves sewn up ready for some straps before that happens though.
Also adding in the buckles my Lambert and I have found. They’re historic replica ones, and the closest typologically I could find. The larger is for belts and the smaller for their random thigh garters straps. We’ve found some smaller ones for knee cops too. Again, they need spraying first, but really love the shape these have.
no more discourse eskels only

“That was a long time ago,” Geralt said quietly. His eyes were fixed on Eskel, who frowned back at him, unblinking.
Witchers bare flesh easier than souls in @brighteyedjill‘s fic for @witcherbigbang 2020, but they just need time: The Things You Have Caused Me Most to Want (are those that furthest elude me) X.
“Jaskier,” Eskel rasped in his ear. “Give it to him.”
Eskel and Jaskier team up to help Geralt find some new ice cream in @brighteyedjill‘s fic for the @witcherbigbang. Read it here to find out what flavor of cone they pick, and why I spent way too long on an ornate border just for the visual puns!
young witchers commission for @Bluebee221 on tritter <3
Thinking of when @jerry-of-rivia was talking about modern Witchers who function both as mainstream cryptids and 3am Denny’s regulars.
Lil witchers (Geralt, Lambert and Eskel) listening to tales of their “father” Vesemir
look ma, it’s a good old-fashioned sketch dump!
i’ve been really having fun drawing a lot of geralt and eskel lately, young and old! this is my hallelujah for hairy scarred witchers utterly devoted to each other
