This Saturday on Behind the Mirror of Music

This Saturday (September 21) we reach the highpoint of our Phantom of the Opera celebrations as Dannii Cohen is joined by four Phantoms to celebrate 115 years since the first chapter of the novel was published in the Gaulois (on September 23 1909.)

-

Ethan Freeman performed the role of Erik The Phantom many times on West End as well as in Vienna, Toronto and Essen, Germany.

During his run he received the nickname "The Leroux Phantom" for his very Leroux accurate take on the role.

His West End run was so well received that he was voted "Most Popular Phantom" in a poll by the International Phantom Of The Opera Fan Club which brought him the opportunity to record a Phantom highlights album for Jay Records together with Claire Moore whom was voted most popular Christine. In 2009 it was updated with songs from Love Never Dies.

-

Peter Karrie performed the role of Erik, The Phantom on the West End, the Canadian (Far East) Tour, Toronto and the UK Tour. Well known for his expressive body language and hand gestures, he’s considered to be among one of the finest “old school” Phantoms.

-

Ciaran Sheehan was understudy Phantom and first cast Raoul on Broadway before landing the position of first cast Phantom in Toronto.

Currently he is touring the USA with three other Phantoms as "The Four Phantoms".

-

Jonathan Roxmouth performed the role of The Phantom in various South African productions and two world/Asian tours.

During the pandemic this production was the only one that continued making him "The only Phantom in the world" for several months.

The Episode will premiere on Saturday 20.00 UK time on YouTube

We. have. Lost. Too. Many. Great. Ones.

  1. Robert Guillaume (1927-2017). He was the second Phantom in Los Angeles, taking over the role from Michael Crawford in 1990. He was also the first black Phantom in the world, thus creating history.
  2. Kevin Gray (1958-2013). He was principal Raoul (1990) and Phantom (1990-1991) on Broadway. He then joined the US Tour as principal Phantom in 1991-1993, along with co-star and wife Dodie Pettit (Christine). Kevin Gray was one of the first POC Raouls, having a Chinese mother and Ukraine father with Jewish roots.
  3. Steve Barton (1954-2001). He originated the role of Raoul, first in the original West End production (1986), then on Broadway (1988), and later also a limited run in Los Angeles (1991). He can be heard in the original cast album. He also understudied the role of the Phantom from the start, and had a run as principal Phantom on Broadway in 1990.
  4. Rebecca Luker (1961-2020). The bell voiced soprano was a part of the original 1988 Broadway cast, understudying Christine. She was promoted to alternate in 1989, and principal later the same year. She remained in the role until 1991.
  5. Byron Nease (1953-2013). He originated the role of Raoul in Toronto in 1989, and is also featured in the cast album. Co-star and lifelong friend Rebecca Caine did a touching interview shortly after his death. It can be read here.
  6. Peter Hofmann (1944-2010). He was the opera world’s power tenor and Wagner heros. He originated the role of the Phantom in Hamburg in 1990, and played some 300 performances. He can also be heard in the German cast album.
  7. Rob Guest (1950-2008). Rob Guest was the Phantom in the original Australian Tour, serving as principal from 1994-1998. He was at one point one of the Phantoms with the most performances in the role (2,289).
  8. Juan Navarro (1968 (?)-2020). He was the original Mexican Phantom, along with Saulo Vasconcelos, in the production running from 1999-2000. He can thus also be heard in the Mexican cast album.
  9. Kevin Gray and Rebecca Luker, Broadway 1990.
  10. Steve Barton and Rebecca Luker, Broadway 1989.
