Make Me Choose: anon asked arthur fighting or merlin doing magic and bailing them all out
It’s so much cooler when it’s real
Man, the rendering glitches in this game suck.
So I bet Merlin would have appreciated a shower for some serious angsting… or, okay, I only realized how suggestive this composition might be when I added his golden glowy eyes (I think you know why), so it’s up to you what he’s doing with his hidden arm. For ME, though, he’s not being naughty here! :P (My Art Tag) *Please do not repost(?) or use elsewhere without my permission, thank you.

A Brief List of Dichotomies that I Hate
- Science vs Religion
- Science vs Art
- Science vs Sports
- Science vs Liberal Arts
Science is not the opposite of anything. Science is a tool we use to analyze the world around us. if anything, it is the peer to these things and not in opposition.
i had a very precise image in my mind of Merlin with a huge scar on his side (from a curse or a magical attack?) and needed to draw it BUT the pose is so complicated and I couldn’t find any helpful reference… hopefully it doesn’t look too weird… (what do arms do how do torso work…. anatomy is hard, thank god I’m taking life drawing lessons again!)
The Crystal Cave.
other things that also contributed to “what happened to” Morgana
- Uther’s persecution of magic users, leading to the surviving population either hiding and lying out fear of execution or lashing out violently for revenge
- Uther’s physical and emotional abuse of Morgana and his restrictions and threats every time she tried to speak out
- Gaius’s refusal to tell Morgana the truth or acknowledge her right to understand herself and to learn control over her developing powers, which he avoids by patronizing her and invalidating her experiences, thereby leaving her to question her reality and feel even more isolated
- Gaius’s adamance that Merlin must not tell Morgana about her magic, or he would put all of their lives at risk and jeopardize Merlin’s destiny (and therefore Arthur’s life and the future of the kingdom)
- Merlin’s inability to commit to a decision and his constant attempts to find a middle path, which resulted in the destruction of the Druid tribe that helped Morgana and her forced return to Camelot
- Arthur’s constant back-and-forth about his beliefs regarding magic, as well as his devotion to his father, removing him from being a potential confidant or supporter
- the connection and kinship she felt with Morgause, who manipulated her by taking advantage of their bond to turn her against the people she loved
- whatever the hell Morgause said and did to Morgana in the year of Morgana’s disappearance
and last (but not least):
- Morgana’s own decisions, because unless you believe that Morgause DID use the Dark Tower to brainwash her after s2, then she acted out of violence and hatred of her own volition.
blame is never 100%.
If you were to change one thing only about Morgana's story what would it be?
OH GOSH. THIS IS A REALLY GOOD QUESTION, THANK YOU.
Hmmmmmm. I suppose that depends.
for the purposes of the way they portrayed her in canon, the one thing I’d change is the time dedicated to her descent to evil/cruelty. I find the sudden turnaround of her personality pretty damn unbelievable, but I think if it had been given more screentime, it’s not an entirely implausible shift. Like, nothing about the story we’ve seen would necessarily change, but they’d have to show us what happened to her/what Morgause told her after she was taken at the end of s2 for me to completely buy the transformation. I’d have loved to see that, and I think it would have made her a more interesting, three-dimensional, and realistic villain.
for the purposes of my ideal everyone-is-happy au, I’d have her find out about Merlin’s magic somehow in seasons one or two. that has the potential to change everything. part of the reason she turned to Morgause so easily was because she felt entirely alone, misunderstood, and isolated in Camelot. but if she knew about Merlin, she would have a connection, he wouldn’t feel the need to lie to her, and she could learn from Gaius the way Merlin does. she’d have a family and a counter-perspective to Morgause’s ways, instead of feeling like the half-sister she’d never met before was her only option.
I love your answer. I have ranted at length about both of those things. I mean, from a writing perspective they did not work very well at keeping true to characterization. Merlin is willing to kill Sophia to protect Arthur, drinks poison without a second thought, almost never listens to Gaius except to say that “in hindsight, I should have done everything differently.” But he decides that he will ignore every experience and instinct that tells him to talk to Morgana and help her bc Gaius days so and bc he’s afraid of what will happen to him if she finds out? That doesn’t make any sense.
And Morgana’s transformation into evil just grinds away at my nerves bc it’s not realistic. She goes from being willing to save the life of a complete stranger child under the belief that no one should be forced to die unfairly to trying to kill/banish Gwen (her best friend, who she’s defended multiple times from everyone) bc she wants power to herself and I don’t really understand where we were supposed to see this change. Things happened but nothing to cause such a reversal of the compassion and fierce bravery and kindness Morgana had shown.
Sorry. Your answers are the best answers, imo. I’ve been ranting about those two things forever, wishing I could just rewrite her entire arch so that it either makes sense and ends happier or at least makes sense on screen. The writers seemed to think that saying “oh a bunch of bad stuff happened somewhere sometime” was all it took.
Ok… ok. I’m done rambling on your answer. Sorry.
