Space Glass: Extraordinary Solar Systems and Flowers Encased in Glass by Satoshi Tomizu

Glass artist Satoshi Tomizu sculpts small glass spheres that appear to contain entire solar systems and galaxies. Planets made of opals, flecks of real gold, and trails of colored glass seem to spin and loop like twists in the Milky Way. While photographed here in a macro view, the pieces are actually quite small and include a small glass loop so each piece can be turned into a pendant. I can’t help but be reminded of this pivotal scene from the acclaimed Men in Black film.

Blackout City

After travelling in Norway, videomaker Nicholas Buer, specialized in timelapses at day and astronomy amateur at night, has directed a very beautiful timelapse called “Blackout City” and which presents cities of the South of England when all is dark and calm. When the city lights are off, it’s the turn of the sky lights to be on : the invisible becomes visible.

Groundbreaking Images of a Comet's Surface Taken by Rosetta's Philae Probe

On November 12, 2014, history was made as the European Space Agency's Philae probe successfully touched down on the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, achieving the very first controlled landing on a comet. For more than a decade, Philae's mothership, the Rosetta spacecraft, has been following the comet around the sun and on its journey throughout the inner solar system in an effort to complete the most detailed study of a comet ever attempted.

The probe has been relaying panoramic images of its surroundings back to Earth since it landed, providing a glimpse of the mysterious surface of Comet 67P. The images reveal a dark, barren landscape filled with towering cliffs, dry dunes, and rocky terrain. While Rosetta continues on its journey, Philae will remain on the comet, analyzing the composition of the surface and sending data back to Earth to provide us with a clearer picture of unknown territory in the vast expanse of space.

For some perspective, here's Matt Wang's depiction of what Comet 67P would look like compared to the size of Los Angeles, rendered to scale. According to the European Space Agency, the comet is about as tall as Mt. Fuji!

This Is The First Image Of Earth Taken From Mars

On 8 March 2004, NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Spirit took the first image of Earth from Mars, an hour before sunrise.

According to the image’s description, the photo is a mosaic of images taken by the rover's navigation camera showing a broad view of the sky, and a panoramic image of Earth. The contrast in the panoramic image was increased twice to make Earth easier to see.
