I love listening to both of you discussing Arrow season 1 on the podcast! Will you and Calli possibly be doing reviews of Arrow seasons 4 & 6 on Watchover?

I’m so happy you’re enjoying it Nonnie! We’re having a blast too. I can’t believe how much of S1 I’ve forgotten!! L*urel really was that annoying. I didn’t imagine it.

I actually had to go back and check when we started Watchover. Our first episode covered 7x05! Damn. That feels like forever ago. My kiddo is watching the whole series, so we aren’t stopping after S2 even though I’ll be done writing reviews once 2x23 is complete. And I can typically finagle Calli into stuff, so I would say the chances are high for us to be chatting about S3-S6 too. Cuz we’re always gonna be obsessed with Arrow!

This message cracked me up.

Favorite Arrow Season

We’re headed into the seventh season of Arrow and I realized it’s high time for me to figure out my favorite Arrow season. I think we can all agree Arrow is an uneven show. There are stellar moments in every season and... not so stellar moments. But that’s episodic television for you. 9/10 Arrow is still better than anything else I watch on television. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. But I struggle with which season is my favorite. THIS IS HARD FOR ME OKAY?

imageimage

I love and hate things about every single season. Bless @callistawolf for giving me the way to figure it out. Every season has 23 episodes. So, out of six seasons what’s my favorite Episode 1? What’s my favorite Episode 2? And so on all the way through 23. Then, you add it all up and see which season comes out on top.

You ready? Let’s dig in...

Since we heard back in August that they had to remove Amanda Waller and ARGUS from the flashback storyline and possibly postpone Anatoli Knyazev and the Bratva in season 4 because of the movies, do you still think they stuck to the original plan of the FB, or do you we would have seen Bratva earlier (possibly in season 4) with maybe the return to the lsland, Waller, and Argus in season 5? Do you think this may also be why it took so long for FB Oliver to lose his humanity?

Yeah, DC screwed Arrow last season. It’s just that simple. I think ARGUS and Amanda Waller were going to play a huge role in the S4 flashbacks. I think being forced to kill her left Arrow with almost no storyline for the flashbacks and it showed. Big time. I’m not sure if we would have gotten to to Bratva in Season 4. Do I think we should have? Yes. Season 4 was about family. It makes more sense to me there. I also think Arrow is trying to cram A LOT into these final flashback episodes and they should have paced it out more evenly. We aren’t even out of Russia yet, the season is 1/3 over and we still have to make it back to the Island. That’s a lot of ground to cover. Season 4 could have used some of that ground and have been greatly improved.

I still don’t think we’ve seen Oliver “The Machine” yet. He still hasn’t shut down as much as he was in the pilot. We’re still working our way towards that. I certainly don’t think Whatshername was a strong enough catalyst for that evolution, but I’m hoping Bratva makes a stronger case.

Arrow Season 4 Wrap Up

Seeing as how Arrow Season 5 is premiering a few short hours, I thought I’d take a break from my fanfiction (it’s almost done. I promise. One  more chapter) and write my Season 4 Wrap Up. Am I late to the party? Yes. Never doubt the power of procrastination.

In the beginning of Season 4, Wendy Mericle and Marc Guggenheim promised a lighter tone.  Given Oliver's outlook on life, his relationship with Felicity and change in tactics on the street, we nicknamed the S4 "The Season of Light." Is that what it ended up being? Or did it shift into something else?  I'm going to examine the season theme and each character to find out.

Let's dig in...

Okay. Stop what you are doing and WATCH THIS SUPERCUT because it is VERY INTERESTING.

First, Olicity got their own SUPERCUT on the S4 DVD. Once again, this shows the $$$$$$ financial investment Arrow and The CW have in this couple. Don’t worry about them. They aren’t going anywhere.

imageimage

What I found extremely interesting was HOW Arrow chose to put the supercut together. A supercut is just clips edited together in a fun way. So they have some cutsey cute music playing and pulled out some of the cutsey cute Olicity scenes. EXCEPT... when it comes to the end. They include the scene of Felicity giving Oliver the ring back.

Then this:

but they DID NOT include Felicity saying, “But I’m already gone.” INSTEAD... they cut to THIS:

Oliver puts the ring back ON and they say “For better or for worse.”

That’s how the supercut ENDS y’all. In the S4 DVD. In the season where Olicity broke up FOR GOOD... this is how the producers/editors/whoever decides to end the Olicity section of the S4 Special Features.

This should tell you exactly where this couple is headed because Arrow just hung a neon sign out. Even bigger than this one:

Choo choo motherfuckers! This train keeps on keeping on!

Why The Flashbacks Were A Hot Mess (maybe?)

Saw this on Twitter...

So... did we just get confirmation on why the flashbacks were such a hot mess in Season 4? This very diplomatic, non answer, feels like a big old answer.

I know DC put the kabosh on the Suicide Squad and Amanda Waller. I didn’t realize the plan (probably) was for ARGUS to feature heavily in the flashbacks for Season 4.

Me:

Yup. I super didn’t know this, but it’s not unusual for me to be a bit slow on the uptake. It certainly explains why the S4 FB were like watching paint dry. Color me annoyed. I really wish DC would let characters and storylines exist in both their television and movie universes. Beyond just The Flash.

slowcookedvig said: Do you think Felicity has had her crucible, or could it still be coming? I know a lot of people feel like her stories were dropped last season. But what if Havenrock/the chip/Felicity's parents were setting up a longer arc for her? I don't want to get expectations up, but I think I could enjoy a longer crucible arc than would have been possible in the last few episodes of a season.

I think like any character on Arrow, Felicity will always have her own arc. It’s a hero’s story, and a drama, so I’m sure the writers will continue to put our girl through hell. Cause the fun!

I agree that the writers failed to dig as deep into Felicity’s paralysis as they could have. There was this overwhelming attitude coming from the writers post Season 3 that Felicity “cried too much” and that they needed to bring her humor back. I personally had zero issue with Felicity crying. She’s a well rounded character primarily because she’s HUMAN and humans cry. Felicity had plenty of things to cry about in Season 3 too. She’s a person. Not a cyborg.

The writers deeply love this character and are well aware of how integral she is to the show’s success. I think the criticism freaked them out. In other words, they didn’t want to mess with The Rainbow. So, the paralysis storyline was introduced with the intent to “cure” Felicity as fast as possible. Felicity rebounded fairly quickly after every difficult moment in Season 4. I think it was the “Don’t Mess With The Rainbow” effect in the writers room.

But Felicity did have her crucible. She just didn’t go as dark or become as lost as I anticipated. She became momentarily lost in both 4x11 (paralysis) and 4x16 (post Oliver break up/wedding). She lost faith in herself in 4x11 and was unable to continue working with Oliver after 4x16. Yet, by the end of 4x11, her faith in herself was restored and by 4x17 Felicity had found a new purpose in life (Palmer Tech and helping paralyzed people).

Hi Lou! I'm kinda confused as to why the finale ended like it did for Olicity. Why are people now saying that it makes sense? I don't really think it makes any sense. They didn't answer their premiere questions. Furthermore, why does it make sense that they aren't together right off the bat in season 5?

I think the finale stumped a lot of people because the timing was off. It felt like there should have been an Olicity reunion for the swing of a the pendulum over S4. I think what the ending showed me is that this whole Olicity thing feels like it’s going to be more of a pendulum swing over two seasons, and not one.

Look, pacing on Arrow is impossible to work out. Their tempo is all over the place. We crawl along, and then suddenly, porches in the sunset! Then we figure it’ll slow down a bit, but no, next episode, it’s engagement rings in souffles! So, naturally, people adjust to this quicker rhythm and think things will move along faster than what they ultimately did. I was certainly looking at how fast they moved Felicity’s paralysis s/l and other things on the show and tried to gauge timing based off that. But then the writers abruptly put the brakes on everything.

I don’t blame people for having whiplash.

Like I said, figuring out Arrow’s pacing is next to impossible. I have just widened my scope of Olicity’s break down and building back up over two seasons, or, from say 4x15 to 5x15. Maybe.

Don’t know if that answered your question at all, Nonnie, but if you’re looking for clarifications, you can do no better than to read @jbuffyangel’s metas on the last couple of episodes. Jen goes into great depth about what was going on there. Definitely worth checking out if you’re confused. :)

Awww.... thanks for the shout out Lou, but I think you explained it perfectly! Pacing on Arrow will forever be our nemesis.

The Space Between: Arrow 4x23 Review (Schism)

The conclusion of Arrow's fourth season left me in a rather interesting place. There was a lot I loved about the finale. There were some things I didn't love. I ended the episode feeling hopeful, but unsatisfied.  I am living in the space between love and hate, hope and sadness, satisfaction and annoyance. It's as if I'm dealing with my own schism as it relates to the story... not unlike Oliver Queen.

And I think that's the point.

Let's dig in...

My problem never was about pacing. It's about the writers leaving unanswered q's from 401 that they spent all season dangling in front of us. Why even bring up the ring if you aren't gonna give us positive payoff for it considering it's been negative for a while now? Why tease us? Why contradict the entire narrative of this season for cheap suspense? I'll feel betrayed if Olicity aren't back together in 423. It means I can't trust their narrative/story anymore because they have no set structure.

Can someone share with me the copy of 4x23 that seems to be going around? Because all my Anons seem to have seen the episode. You know what questions are being answered and how they are being answered. You know what the complete arc is and the whole shabang!

I’m seeing some key words being tossed back at me like “narrative” and “story structure.” And yes, I use these words frequently but somehow I’m being left with the impression that everybody seems to think “narrative” and “story structure” means positive ending or “we get everything we want.” No my friends. It does not. @louiseblue1 and I have worked extremely hard at trying to explain these concepts because we feel it’s important to understanding Arrow. But these concepts do not automatically mean happy ending. No if a season ends negatively or unhappy does that mean Arrow has abandoned their narrative.

When I use the words “swerve” or “shock value” these are not catch phrases I’m tossing around to sound smart. These words have meaning to me and there has to be a basis for these types of qualifications. I’m not a lemming y’all. I just don’t eat everything Arrow serves me. I’ve been talking about narrative, story structure, “shock value” for a long time. Don’t you think I’d be raging if I thought there was a loss of narrative/story structure? Don’t you think I’d be angry if I thought Arrow was just writing for shock value?  Of course I would. I’d be leading the charge.

I’m not right now because I don’t see any of those things. Why? I see another route in the story that is absolutely plausible. One that was completely set up in 4x01 and might be concluded in 4x23. But I didn’t see it until 4x21. Hence the, “hey this might not go our way this year” warning in the review. This is why I say the stories are like puzzles. Every episode is another piece and it becomes clearer and clearer where they are headed.

And I swear... IF where I think they are going is where they are actually going the structure remains. There is beautiful symmetry in an unhappy ending that is HUGE for Oliver’s character. It was set up with ONE LINE in 4x01. IF I’m right... it’s gonna be good. It’s gonna be really really good. And an amazing character development for Oliver and it means a FUCKING AWESOME SEASON 5. There is way more happy in the unhappy than people realize.

But you guys have to CALM DOWN. We have to see the episode okay? Just let Arrow finish telling the story. Either way, I truly think it’s going to be okay. Both options, happy or unhappy, are going to be the Arrow that we know and love. It’s gonna be okay. I truly believe that.

COH2 Spoilers

Hey guys. I was out most of the day. I grabbed the COH2 tweets, posted and then I was off shopping with my mom. I need to decorate my house and my mom is a mad genius at decorating. Then I hit Civil War with my hubby (IT WAS AWESOME. I’m neither Team Cap or Team Iron Man, but I am adopting Spider-Man and Black Panther should be in charge of... everything.)

This is honestly the first chance I had to truly sit down at the computer, even though my Nick is yelling at me to go to bed. Pfft. Sleep is for the weak! So let’s discuss the spoilers.

First things first - thank you to all the amazing fandom members for gathering the scoop. It’s not an easy job. You have a lot of info coming at you, schedules to keep track of and there’s never time to eat so blood sugar is always an issue. The fandom kicked ass as usual. Special love to my girls @olicity-i-believe-in-you@kalichica12 and @darlinginmyway. Y’all are adorbs and I’M SO SAD I DIDN’T GET TO TALK TO YOU TODAY. I was buying pretty things. ;) But I hopefully will amend that tomorrow.

God bless @louiseblue1@fanmommer and @callistawolf for keeping me posted and answering question after question. You guys are the actual best.

No joke - I have at least 90 messages just from today. I get it. I do. You guys are the sweetest for even asking my opinion, but there’s no physical way to answer them all. I just can’t. So, I’m writing this post to let you know where I’m at on the situation.
