Hey Jen, over the last few episodes in the flashbacks, I really felt like we were finally starting to see Oliver "the machine" take hold. So I just wanted ask, in your opinion, when do you think the machine was born, what would you say was the final trigger? It certainly seems like the machine has more or less taken hold by 5x17, I mean he even tortured and killed a criminal just "for practice", that's certainly the darkest and coldest FB Ollie has EVER gotten so far!

I feel that torture scene in 5x17 was pretty monumental. Oliver crossed a serious line there. It was deeply dark. However, I think the machine is still building a little. He has some final pain, torture and darkness to face before he is steeled to return home.

I think it's really neat that the end of the flashbacks (and season) will end with the first scene from the pilot. Do you think this means we'll finally find out how Oliver got the scruffy long beard and ripped and ragged clothes we saw him in (similar to Yao Fei) when he was rescued? Since Oliver was likely rescued in October 2012, I also wonder if the end of the season will flash forward five months so that the end of the season is exactly five years after Oliver comes home?

Yes. I believe we will get an answer to all of our flashback questions. Stephen Amell is very Type A (we recognize our own) and said he gave the writers a list of questions that need to be answered by the end of the season. The Captain is on it. Don’t worry.

No, I don’t think there will be a flash forward. But I do I believe just as Oliver is rescued in the flashbacks we will see him coming “home” in the present day (letting the Island go forever). What “home” looks like to Oliver Queen is the question that needs to be answered. My guess is it will be Felicity.

At Arrow‘s very first TCA press tour appearance in summer 2012, it was said that the CW superhero series would end exactly as it began, with the image of Oliver spying the fishing boat that would rescue him from Lian Yu, at the close of his torturous five-year odyssey away from Starling City.

Back then, explaining the superhero series’ flashback structure for the first time, producer Andrew Kreisberg said, “Ideally by the last episode of the series, the very last flashback will be Oliver seeing the boat that rescued him in the pilot.”

That, however, will not be the case.

“Spoiler alert. That’s going to end up being the Season 5 finale,” Arrow showrunner Marc Guggenheim tells TVLine, turning one of our predictions for this TV season into a reality.

“It was really just a hope at that point [in 2012] that the show would run five years,” Guggenheim says of the aforementioned original plan, “and we always thought that we would intercut the final moment of the series with the first moment of the series, that it would form one big Moebius strip.

“There’s still a part of me that wishes we could do that,” the showrunner continues. “But I wouldn’t want to artificially extend the flashbacks [beyond five seasons], and I also wouldn’t want to artificially cut the show short. It would’ve been a beautifully elegant thing, and Five Years Ago Me would’ve loved it. But things change, and I do think it’ll make the Season 5 finale pretty awesome.”

Which is not to say that, come May, the season will end quietly and poetically with bedraggled Oliver peering over that craggy ridge, setting eyes on salvation.

“Look, we have some incredibly clear plans for what we want to do in the Season 5 finale,” Guggenheim shares. “At the same time, we always leave ourselves room to be like, ‘…and throw this cliffhanger in, throw that twist in.’ Usually the craziest ideas on this show tend to be the ones that the ideas sort of linger, and we never really quite set on them. Like, ‘Oh, maybe we’ll kill off Tommy?’ We don’t fully commit until we’re pretty much breaking the episode.”

Why The Flashbacks Were A Hot Mess (maybe?)

Saw this on Twitter...

So... did we just get confirmation on why the flashbacks were such a hot mess in Season 4? This very diplomatic, non answer, feels like a big old answer.

I know DC put the kabosh on the Suicide Squad and Amanda Waller. I didn’t realize the plan (probably) was for ARGUS to feature heavily in the flashbacks for Season 4.

Me:

Yup. I super didn’t know this, but it’s not unusual for me to be a bit slow on the uptake. It certainly explains why the S4 FB were like watching paint dry. Color me annoyed. I really wish DC would let characters and storylines exist in both their television and movie universes. Beyond just The Flash.

joverwatch said:I love the idea of you replying into a SOTY post. It's genius! Let's do this! Not a question, but inspiration for a Bratva storyline during S5. What would you like/think will happen?

Thanks my friend! I thought it was a fun way to reblog SOTY. I am seriously lacking in talent compared to all the wonderful artists, fic writers and gif makers. But I’m good at babbling. lol

Oh my god. I love you so much for this question. BRATVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When you say Bratva in your head does it sound like Tevye’s “TRADITION!” from Fiddler on the Roof? Cause it does for me.

I AM SO PUMPED FOR RUSSIA Y’ALL. If you read my reviews this year you know I was driven to MAD BOREDOM with the S4 flashbacks. They were just awful. Start to finish. BAD. One of my primary complaints is that it really didn’t move Oliver down the field in terms of flashback progression. His relationship with Whatshername wasn’t significant enough to really warrant Oliver shutting down his emotions (as I’ll believe we’ll see in Season 5). Furthermore, Oliver just wasn’t dark enough. He wasn’t MEAN enough. He was still pretty warm and fuzzy. Remember, we’re moving towards a man who loves deeply, but who cut that side of him off. That’s who Oliver was in the pilot. Stephen often says Oliver was a machine in the pilot and that’s certainly true. However, he wasn’t a machine because he doesn’t FEEL. He became a machine because he felt too much. So Season 4 really didn’t do enough to push Oliver to that edge of emotional heartbreak for me. Mostly because Stephen had zip chemistry with Whatshername and I was more fascinated with watching paint dry than I was with her character.

Too bitter? Sorry. Give me another month. Nope. I’ll still be bitter.

So, what I am looking forward to is the writers finally pulling the trigger on The Machine. This is it. It’s Season 5 - the end of the flashbacks. It’s go time. I want to see how the Bratva strips Oliver of his remaining warm and fuzzy and turns him into a truly lethal killer. I want to see shirtless training. Not just for the gratuity, although that’s certainly important, but for the progression in Oliver’s skill sets. Oliver is a survivalist and his fighting evolved with every teacher - Yao Fei, Shado, Slade and Maseo. Every teacher offers another layer. I think the Bratva will give Oliver the cold precision he’s been lacking in the flashbacks. Basically, I want to see how we get to THIS:

I noticed that there were no flashbacks AT ALL in this week's episode, I don't think that's EVER happened except for the season 1 episodes that the Huntress appeared in! Do you think this is because the writers realize how bad the flashbacks have been this season and are just not going to even bother with them until perhaps the very end of the season?

No, there’s always episodes without flashbacks every season. I think the writers do realize the flashbacks aren’t working this year, but that’s not the reason there weren’t any in 4x20. That happens every year. The flashbacks will be back probably in 4x21 and will not stop until the end of the season.

Do you think that for whatever reason, they changed the original plan for the flashbacks in season 3? It did seem like whatever was supposed to happen in Hong Kong was intended to be even worse than it ended up being. Do you think season 3 was when Oliver was originally supposed to shut down his emotions, and season 4 was supposed to be Bratva? It would certainly explain why the quality of the flashbacks gradually declined from mid-season 3 onwards. Thoughts?

No I don’t think they changed the plan in S3. I just don’t think the plan was very good and it reflected on screen. But Hong Kong is a million times better than the FB crap they’ve been shoveling this year. Cannot believe I’m actually wishing for HONG KONG. Yeesh.

Another thing I like to address about the flashbacks, and I know I may be in the minority here, but I think cutting Oliver's hair in the FB this year was a HUGE mistake! As Laura pointed out in her article, that was the aesthetic difference between FB Ollie and present day Oliver, not to mention at some point in the next year and a half, he has to somehow not only grow all that hair back, but the scruffy beard we saw in the pilot. Do you think any of this will be addressed in the season 5 FB?

I cannot freaking believe I am saying this but... Flashback Oliver needs that hideous wig. And I 100% agree with Laura. He’s not dark enough for where he should be at this stage. This season felt like a holding pattern and it results in some pretty boring flashbacks. I think Whatshername’s death is the final trigger. It’s the last straw. He just can’t allow himself to care anymore. That’s when Oliver shuts down emotionally. Then he’ll be ready to become the machine we saw in the premiere. Which means BRATVA!!!!!

Marc knows. He always knows. I agree with Laura though the problem isn’t that Oliver is becoming too close to the man we met in the premiere. The problem is that he isn’t CLOSE ENOUGH this season. Let’s crank up the steel, ruthless killer aspect. NOW.

And they need to kill Whatshername. It’s time. It’s way past time. Deep six her and let’s get Oliver shutting off those emotions.

Also @laurawritesabout is my spirit animal. She thinks my thoughts. Has to be said occassionally.

If 4x18 got an advance positive review, we just KNOW it's going to a great episode! Heck, he even said the FB would be better and actually tie in to present day. I wonder, do you think this could mean Whatshername is FINALLY dying as well (please let it be so)? The contrast to how Oliver reacts to Laurel's death in the present compared to how he reacts to Whatshername's death in the FB could be a parallel. I honestly can't think of anything else in the FB that can possibly tie in to present day.

100% Anon.Exactly what I think will happen. We'll see Oliver start to shut downin the FB after Whatshername's death and see him deal with thefallout from Laurel's death. Only this time he's not going to shutdown. He may get lost in the darkness for a moment but he'll find hisway out.

As you pointed out in your reviews last year, in each of Oliver's five years away, he loses another piece of his humanity. Season 1 was about Oliver learning how to survive, season 2 was when he became a killer, season 3 was when he became an assassin, what do you think is the next step of his evolution in the flashbacks? I suppose all that is left is for him to become a weapon and then a vigilante, though not necessarily in that order, thoughts?

I think actually we're going to seeOliver shut down his emotions post S4 flashbacks. The machine will beborn. Losing Whatshername will only prove to him that caring onlyhurts. Then, the Bratva will forge that machine into a weapon.

Do you remember that spoiler SA gave at the start of the season about Felicity not being the only girl in Oliver's life this season? Did he mean FB girl or baby mama? Because I know at some point he also said when he said Felicity is the only girl in Oliver's life, he can't see that changing. So what did he mean by there's more than one girl this year spoiler?

He was talking about Whatshername(Flashback girl).

You know how on episode 14 or 15 the flashbacks are like 70% of the episode???? Do you think that will be a thing this year, or no cause I feel like they really don't care about the flashbacks??????????? Idk they just are meh to me. If they do it this year im gonna have to prepare

Oh sweet holy Mother of Zeus. I pray there is NO FLASHBACK EPISODE. The utter mind numbing bore that it would be to watch Whatshername for the majority of those 42 minutes is shudder inducing. Perhaps if we do not speak of it then the horror will simply pass us by.

I don't get the flashbacks at all. I though Oliver and whatsherface were supposed to be romantic (gross). But there is no movement in that direction. And is this Taina woman is going to hook up with her brother's killer then? B/c that makes sense. And what is with the Shado dream? She weirdly thought O had feelings for T but Oliver said he doesn't. What? I thought the flashbacks were supposed to make him dark but dreamShado is trying to make him hold onto his light and he listened to her. pt 1

pt 2 of flashback question. The Shado dream thing is so confusing. And what is the rock that magically appeared in Oliver’s hand? Where are they going with these flashbacks? They make no sense! Sorry got distracted and forgot to send pt 2 after pt 1, lol.

Unfortunately, the flashbacks suck. They are starting to connect to the present and I explained how in my 4x12 review so I won’t repeat myself. I think they brought Shado back because Whatshername is such an epic fail.

Hi jen, it just occured to me, in the premiere, the scene in the hospital where Oliver looks at Felicity with all the pain in his eyes were tied up to the scene in hong kong where Aiko was introduced. I mean in both case we had a child.. You see where I'm going with this? I mean Oliver I think Oliver has a think with children, considering the fact that his own kid. Do you think will writers ever visit this topic?

I think whatever happens in Hong Kong is really bad and could definitely involve Aiko. Hong Kong is really where  I believe Oliver loses his humanity. The impact on him will definitely be addressed.
