Hot and Cold: Arrow 1x22 Review (Darkness of the Edge of Town)

There is no episode that exemplifies the disjointed nature of Season 1 more than “Darkness on the Edge of Town.”  We have Exhibit A: an OTA field op and the smoaking hot chemistry of Stephen Amell and Emily Bett Rickards igniting in an elevator shaft of all places.

And Exhibit B: the other show. A frigid black hole I feared we’d never escape from.

Let’s dig in…

Hello! I absolutely love your work and you have helped me process so much of Arrow and Olicity. First, I know the actors are ‘acting’ but if my husband looked/worked with a co-worker like Stephen looks at Emily Bett, he would be looking for another job, lol. In season 1, episode 22 when Felicity and Oliver are swinging in the elevator shaft and she says “I imagined you saying that under different circumstances” and Oliver looks over at her (wowza) what do you think he was thinking?

If my husband was an actor I’d be sitting my ass on set everywhere he went.

Oooh! This is such a good question. I think with most of Felicity’s hilarious foot in mouth remarks Oliver’s initial thought is, “I can’t believe she said that” and also, “She’s so adorable.”

But when he turns to look at her, and levels that sexually charged STARE, he’s thinking, “I want to try those platonic circumstances. A LOT. Many times. Give me all the platonic circumstances I can handle. And I can handle a lot. Many, many hours of platonic circumstances shall be had.”

Is it warm in here?

Hi. Thinking ahead to what 4x22 episode title will be. Every season episode 22 has been named after a Bruce Springsteen song and was an indication of what Oliver would need to do to beat the season's big bad. 1x22: Darkness on the edge of town - had to stab himself in the chest to beat Malcolm. 2x22: Streets of fire: Prevented a drone strike from destroying city. 3x23: This is your sword: Killed Ra's with his own sword. What do you think of Light of day for 4x22 episode title? Too obvious?

Well first of all... mind blow with this astute observation Anon.

I never really noticed that before and you are right. There’s a great line from Teen Wolf that I whole heartedly agree with when it comes to storytelling:

Once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, three times is a pattern.

So I would say that the episode title of of the penultimate episode of the season is extremely important and often points the way towards what threat Oliver will be facing and how he’ll defeat his enemies. (FYI 3x22 was “This Is Your Sword.” That was a typo I’m sure.)

I love your Bruce Springsteen song selection. I think in the season of Oliver trying to live in the light we have the best chance ever of that making the cut! And no... I don’t think it’s too obvious. Arrow isn’t exactly known for their subtly. I mean, sweet Lord, the season finales have been titled, “Sacrifice”, Unthinkable” and “My Name Is Oliver Queen.” Obvious is a safe bet my friend. That’s how Arrow rolls.
