You think the four of you can save New York? You can’t even save yourselves.
When fans imagined who might play the title role in Marvel’s forthcoming Netflix series Iron Fist, they had some fresh ideas. While Iron Fist is white in the comics, many fans hoped the superhero, a master of martial arts, would be played by an Asian-American actor. On Thursday, those hopes were dashed when it was reported Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones got the job.

I wish I could say I was surprised but sadly I am not the least bit shocked that when it came to casting Iron Fist they decided to go for yet another generic white actor
“And for the role of Iron Fist, we’re casting… this guy!”
I’m genuinely starting to suspect that the TV/movie industry is cranking these actors out of some kind of high tech cloning machine like the boy band from Gravity Falls…like they ALL have basically the exact same generic face, like they’re the blank slate in a video games character creation screen and the player hasn’t bothered to make any changes they’ve just clicked through the default options and gone ‘This is fine’
Look, I’m glad Iron Fist is happening for Netflix.
But if Misty isn’t in the series I’m going to start flipping tables.
NETFLIX AND MARVEL’S FIVE-SHOW PLAN
Daredevil has already launched on Netflix with the first season getting a lot of critical acclaim. A second series is currently filming but there’s plenty more in the pipeline from the Marvel-Netflix team-up.
We prepare for the arrival of Marvel’s Defenders on Netflix – a sequence of limited series that will lead into a ‘team event’. So who are they and what shows will they get?
- DAREDEVIL (Charlie Cox)
Matt Murdock is a man who was blinded as a young boy but gifted with extraordinary senses. After his father was murdered by mobsters, Murdock dedicated his life to fight injustice in New York City as a lawyer by day, and by night as a vigilante known as Daredevil. (2015)
- JESSICA JONES (Krysten Ritter)
Jessica Jones is the superheroine formely known as Jewel. Jess also did a brief stint as Knightress, and has also gone by Power Woman. (Her powers, are strength, durability and flight — which she gained when the car that her family was in crashed into a military convoy carrying radioactive chemicals.) She’s an ex-superhero turned private investigator. She can be reckless, she can be stubborn, she can be a mess. (2015)
- LUKE CAGE (Mike Colter)
Luke Cage, wrongly convicted and unjustly imprisoned, was altered in a failed prison experiment that granted him bulletproof skin and superhuman strength. With his street smarts, and unending determination to do right, he fights for the common man! (2016)
- IRON FIST (to be announced)
The latest in a long line of warriors who wielded his power against the wicked, Danny Rand is the Immortal Iron Fist. Protector of the mystical city of K'un Lun, he channels a soul of a dragon making his fists like unto iron. The power of the Iron Fist allows Rand to concentrate his chi in his fist, giving him super strength and focus – though its use leaves him physically and mentally drained for a time. He’s a highly skilled martial artist, and possesses the ability of telepathy and mind fusion. (2016)
- THE DEFENDERS will be the last show to appear on Netflix once the other characters have been introduced. This is a team-up of Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones.
This is an interesting read, and an interesting (and also a little frightening for those looking forward to Danny being in the MCU) dilemma. I won’t be surprised in the slightest if they hold off on going forward with Iron Fist until Doctor Strange is released in theaters. Guardians was a toe in the water for the Galactic side of the Marvel Universe in the same way, I expect, that Doctor Strange will be the toe in the water for the Mysticism side of the universe. Obviously, the Galactic side of the universe was embraced whole heartedly and it’s getting new titles and a more complete integration with the Real World MCU. While I’ve yet to hear news coming out of the Doctor Strange camp that I’ve been terribly thrilled by, I would hate for Doctor Strange to be the litmus test to see if audiences will buy Danny’s origins. If there’s a concern that Danny’s powers origins won’t be embraced (and even Doctor Strange’s), I ask you only to look to Thor. Thor has been a staple of the Real World MCU since phase one and it took us very little convincing to accept gods and god-like powers as something that exist in this universe. I feel like the groundwork for Danny’s powers is already in place, especially in a Post-Guardians MCU. So the notion that Danny may be too ‘weird’ for the MCU as it exists now doesn’t hold a lot of water with me. Is then the hangup that the best pitch for the show makes it too much like Arrow? (Orphaned son/martial arts/secret city/etc) Arrow was/is wildly successful, and if rumors about a Thunderbolts Netflix show are true, I think one could posit that the show is 100% in response to Suicide Squad. So obviously Marvel has no issue piggybacking off concepts that sell, so I also don’t really see that But all this does make me wonder that if we do see Danny in the MCU, it may not be in his own series, but as a supporting character in another title.
Official Netflix synopsis!
2015 release for Jessica Jones maybe confirmed?
