This section from Heather Cox Richardson this morning struck one hell of a cord with me today.

I've always believed that deep down- most Americans want the same things. They want safe food, roads without potholes, and they want to be left to live lives as they please as long as no one is hurt.

But the propaganda, the conspiracy theories, the cults of personality- they can be so loud sometimes that it drowns out sense. And they used that to their advantage to paint a scary picture of the country that doesn't exist because fear works.

And here we are.

Some day I'm going to run a trad fantasy dungeon crawler campaign where instead of unbroken ten-thousand-year dynasties, every time the player characters need to interact with the nobility, etc. I use a set of lookup tables to randomly generate the kingdom's current political situation. If the new results are irreconcilable with the old, there was a revolution while they were down in the dungeon and they didn't notice.

Fascinated by the idea that having a player character with a noble backstory accelerates the pace of political turmoil because each downtime counts as a separate instance of "interacting with nobility".

Historian: and then after thousands of years of relative stability, the Third Age finally came to a close, followed by the Age of We're Not Gonna Fucking Get Into This Bullshit.

Apparently the Congo river is deep enough that there are several species of fish with cavedwelling adaptations (near-total to total blindness, loss of pigmentation, etc) because light doesn't reach where they live. the fuck

Parts of the country where self-service gas pumping is illegal.

I didn’t know about New Jersey’s law so imagine my shock when a pump jockey sprinted at my car and kicked my door shut when I tried to get out to get gas. I rolled down my window and asked him “Is there a law against pumping your own gas or something?” And he looked at me like I’M nuts and just said “…yes?”

okay but imagine this in the reverse. when i left new jersey as a driver for the first time and sat in my car for about ten minutes wondering where the attendant was until a nice man tapped on my window and just said the words “New Jersey?” and when I nodded he told me to get out of the car so he could teach me how to pump gas (and nicely didn’t laugh at me when I shot gas out of the nozzle across the side of my car).

me and the boys (all from new jersey) went on a road trip out of state and had to get gas and it ended up being sort of a Group Puzzle for the gang as we huddled around the gas pump and nozzle and tank and whatnot. just picture five people standing around the gas tank opening like its part of an escape room. it was very silly.

So I guess the answer to “How many Jersey Boys does it take to figure out a gas pump?” is “At least 4”

For those, like me, who had no idea why "I die where I cling" is sexy or even interesting, apparently, the original phrase was in French and meant to be a pun, since the French for orgasm is "petite mort" or "little death" so it was a reference to orgasms and the erogenous nature of the inner thigh. This PBS article lacked context and nobody provided it in the notes.

and ALSO settings ➡️ privacy ➡️ Apple advertising ➡️ toggle "personalized ads" to OFF
