the difference between leo and annabeth is literally intelligence vs. wisdom and it doesn’t get much simpler than that lmao

picture the characters in a high school setting. leo’s the motherfucker who gets perfect scores without trying, to the point where it’s infuriating how effortless he is. he’s always the first one to hand in his test, he oftentimes corrects his teacher on their math, and he gets a 1500 on the SAT the first try, his math score being perfect. he’s just a genius, and has been that way since birth. and no one understands, because he never takes shit seriously. things like STEM have always come naturally to him, and his success in classes like English or History comes from the benefit of personal experience. like bilingualism, having a multi-ethnic background, and a weird childhood hyperfixation on TV game shows like, jeopardy!, wheel of fortune, or who wants to be a millionaire. he’s a mixture of natural talent and an encyclopedia of useless knowledge that actually comes in handy once in a while.

then there’s annabeth, who is as seemingly smart as leo, but for different reasons that she keeps on the down low. she’ll shoot for a high A the first quarter, because assignments are easier then, and then purposefully take it easy second quarter, because of even if she gets a B her semester grade will round out to an A. semester grades effect GPA, not quarter grades. she purposefully takes teachers she knows are pushovers, because they’ll let her hand in essays 3 weeks late. she’ll take dual enrollment classes instead of AP because you’re guaranteed a college credit in DE as long as you pass the class with a C. she only takes the SAT twice, studying really hard for the reading section the first time, and then studying really hard for math the second time, so ultimately her superscore comes out to be 1500. for annabeth, school is all about strategy. work smart, not hard. checkers, not chess.

(however, none of this is relevant because in-canon-verse harley would absolutely wash them both)

ive always imagined leo being the kind of person to always be trying super hard to be upbeat and jokey to get everyones approval while quietly suffering from intense rejection sensitivity because he is very jumpy and impulsive and generally hyperactive, i just think rick tried to do this and failed very badly in portraying that realistically and instead made leo feel like a badly written cartoon character with some weird racist stereotypes on the side.
